The German national final of the year 1956 might be called one of the most mysterious ones in the history of the contest. Although a German newspaper of that year claims that it would be held with the 11 artists above, it is not even sure if it took place at all: On the one hand, none of the artists can remember having taken part - among others, Lys Assia, Bibi Johns and Margot Hielscher were interviewed for the book Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein but all of them state that they did not take part. Furthermore, Lys Assia was already chosen to represent Switzerland and would have been not allowed to take part for two countries. Freddy Quinn, the second representative didn't even take part at all!

Trivia: Walter Andreas Schwarz' song is said to have been called Das Lied vom großen Glück rather than Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück in the national final. The title was changed for the record cover and the Erovision Song Contest. There are rumours that Lys Assia took part with the song Ein kleiner goldner Ring, which is not very likely: With that song she was a representative in aother German song festival in 1961.

Some of the so-called representaives would have Eurovision Song Contest connections later: Bibi Johns recorded the German version of the Danish entry in 1957 together with Gustav Winckler and would host the Swedish national final in 1983. Margot Hielscher would represent Germany in 1957 and 1958 as well as argot Eskens would do so in 1966. Gerhard Wendland would take part in the 1960 German final again.
