Biography
Lys Assia (born Rosel Schärer 02/03/26 in Hürlikon), a dancer from an early age, had to replace a female singer one day in 1940. People liked her singing so much that she changed from dance to singing, appearing with Josephine Baker and touring America with the hugely popular Percy Faith and His Orchestra. In the early 50s she combined her singing with acting and appeared in films like Schlager Parade and Ein Mann Vergißt Die Liebe. Prior to her first appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest she scored the biggest hit of her career in 1954, Oh Mein Papa, a song that would be covered all around the world.
Although we don't know the jury verdict of 1956 except for the number one - the other song that Lys sang, Refrain - word got round that Das Alte Karussell ended almost last. That might be an explanation for the fact the song never made it onto vinyl.
