For the first time, there were no semi finals before the UK national final. The show was hosted by Katie Boyle, who hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in London the year before (and would do so another three times).
Among the contestants was Bryan Johnson, who had already taken part in the 1957 semi finals of the UK selection and finally represented his country in 1960 to finish second with Looking high, high, high.
The winners were chosen by a jury consisting of no less than 140 people. The Allisons won the ticket to Cannes with only one point ahead of Steve Arlen.
