Biography

Hugues Aufray debuted in 1959 as a recording artist, when he recorded Serge Gainsbourg's Le Poinçonneur Des Lilas. It wouldn't be songs like this one that would make him famous however. But like many others (like The Byrds) he was influenced by Bob Dylan. It was popular French singer Johnny Halliday who took him into the spotlight by letting him open for his concerts in early 1964. His appearance at this year's Eurovision Song Contest for Luxembourg pushed him further into the public eye. Finally in the summer of 1964 he managed his first big EP hit, N'Y Pense Plus, a cover version of Dylan's Don't Think Twice, It's All Right. In 1965 he followed this success by an album's worth of cover versions of Bob Dylan songs, Hugues Aufray Chante Dylan. Equally popular was his 1966 album À L'Olympia. Hugues still records albums, but they don't sell as good as they did in the 60's. Hugues is still very popular on the cabaret circuit in France.
