Biography

This was Vice Vukov's second time at the Eurovision Song Contest. He already participated in the 1963 contest with Brodovi, being only the third Yugoslav artist that participated in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest, since it started in 1956.

Although Vice Vukov was from Croatia, he participated for Bosnia-Hercegovina in the Yugoslav national final (and won).

Vice Vukov was born in Šibenik (on the Adriatic coast in Croatia). He was the superstar of the 60's. His status could be compared with that of Domenico Modugno or Claudio Villa in Italy, although both his Eurovision entries were disasters (at least seen as such). He won many festivals all over former Yugoslavija and was twice second in the Intervision festival (The Eastern European version of the ESC). He was also very popular in the Sovjet Union where he toured extensively. His career came to an abrupt end in 1971 during the political purges in Croatia. He was accused of nationalism and he could not perform. His songs were not played on the radio anymore. Some radio-stations even destroyed his records in their archives. He took a job in a Zagreb company and started to study, he even achieved a M.A. in international politics. He started to reappear in public with democratisation in the late 80's.

The song almost got disqualified before the start of the Yugoslav pre-selection. Composer Julijo Maric also arranged the song, which he shoudn't have done as he was not on the list of invited arrangers that had been made up by a special committee. Because everybody considered the arrangement as a good one, a solution was found. It isn't quite clear what that solution was. One story says that a Zagreb weekly, Studio, published a list of the competing songs a day before the final with Vojislav Simic as arranger of the song. The other story goes that Maric only had to promise he would allow a new arrangement for the final in Napels if it proved necesary (which did not).
