Biography
Lado Leskovar won Slovenska popevka (Slovenian Songcontest) in 1963. He was very popular with the younger generation because of his image of "protest singer". His songs were often full of social criticism and anti-war feelings. One of his big hits was a cover version of Gilbert Becaud's "Nathalie". He was even invited to Becaud's show on French television because it was the best non-French cover version of the song. In 1964 Lado moved to Belgrade where he lived until 1981. In this period he was more popular in other parts of former Yugoslavija than in Slovenia. He also toured extensively in the Sovjet Union where singers from former Yugoslavija were very popular. He also acted is some movies, notably in the biography of the famous dancer Isadora Duncan with Vanessa Redgrave in the title-role for which she was nominated for an Acadamy Award. A friendship developped between the two with Vanessa giving Lado's wife a fur coat as a wedding present. She was also a guest of honour at Lado's jubilee concert a few years ago.
