Biography

Initially Julio Iglesias pursued a career in soccer. But when he was seriously injured in a car crash, he had to change his mind. Having taught himself to play the guitar, he started to write his own songs. Gwendolyne is one of the writing efforts of Julio. Far more popular he became, when he started to record songs with famous Spanish composer/conductor/producer Ramón Arcusa, the man who also wrote the Spanish entries of 1968, 1972 and 1978. First proof was his 1972 hit Un Canto A Galicia, a song that was in the Spanish, South American and Benelux charts that year. But it would be 1979, before the rest of Europe fell for Julio's charmes. Quiereme Mucho was his big breakthrough, although it would be 1982, before that song would also hit the UK charts. Quiereme Mucho was a very old Spanish song that had previously graced the European charts as Yours (in English by amongst others Vera Lynn), Nimm Deine Weiße Gitarre (in German by Gert Timmerman (Dutch finals 1962 and 1965)) and Gisteren Heeft Zij Mij Verlaten (in Dutch by Koos Alberts). The 1981 UK no. 1 Begin The Beguine (Volver A Empezar), his first hit in the UK, was needed to get his 1979 European hit into the UK charts, eventually reaching the number 3 spot in that country. Other big hits in Europe and America were his duets with Willie Nelson (To All The Girls I've Loved Before) and Diana Ross (All Of You). Apparently he didn't forget the other competitors in this year's Eurovision Song Contest. For his 1994 album Crazy he recorded his version of the Lucio Dalla song Caruso with Lucio Dalla himself.
