Biography

After her success in the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest Vicky Leandros (born Vassiliki Papathanassiou on 23/08/52 on Corfu) went on to have several hits in Germany such as St. Tropez - Gitarren Bei Nacht in 1970, a song that would hit other European charts as late as 1973. She also got her own TV show in Germany called Ich Bin. But Vicky's career really took off, after she entered into the Eurovision Song Contest for a second time in 1972 and won with Après Toi. A song that soon would top the charts all around Europe. Her singles Ich Hab' Die Liebe Geseh'n and Die Bouzouki Klang Durch Die Sommernacht also reached several European charts including the UK charts. At the end of 1972 Vicky Leandros teamed up with Sandra Reemer (Netherlands 1972, 1976, 1979), Dries Holten (Netherlands 1972) and Alice Babs (Sweden 1958) amongst others for the single Auntie. Follow-up singles like Theo Wir Fahren Nach Lødz and Tango D'Amor only charted in the charts of the Benelux and the German speaking countries. And in the course of her career she decided to concentrate on these countries rather than try to achieve worldwide success. In the early 80's she cut some successful Dutch singles like Verloren Zijn We Niet and Ver Van Het Leven (her version of the Nino de Angelo song Jenseits Von Eden), before she took some time off. In the mid-90's Vicky returned to the stage full-time again achieving her biggest success of the 90's with a German cover version of the Céline Dion original My Heart Will Go On called Weil Mein Herz Dich Nie Mehr Vergißt.
