Biography
For the Eurovision Song Contest The Shadows consisted of Brian Bennett, Hank B. Marvin, John Farrar and Bruce Welch. The Shadows started their career in the 50's under the name The Drifters. Then consisting of Marvin, Welch and Jet Harris and Tony Meehan they were most popular for backing Cliff Richard (UK participant in 1968 and 1973). Changing their name to The Shadows they also recorded highly successful instrumental singles without Cliff: Apache, Kon-Tiki and Foot Tapper to name but a few. The mid-60's saw Brian Bennett and Brian Locking replace Jet and Tony and non-instrumental songs enter the Shadows' repertoire. Brian Locking soon left again. In 1967 the group called it a day, only to reunite in 1975, the three remaining members teaming up with producer/songwriter and then-husband of Olivia Newton-John (UK participant in 1974), John Farrar, for some non-instrumental songs, of which the 1975 UK entry was the most successful. Then the group resorted to recording instrumental cover versions of hits like Don't Cry For Me Argentina and Theme From "The Deer Hunter" (Cavatina). After 1981 the group's success dwindled, only Hank B. Marvin achieving success in 1986, when teaming up with Cliff Richard and The Young Ones on a new version of Living Doll for Comic Relief. Since the early-90's the group's career is put on hold for a solo career of Hank B. Marvin bringing so far a successful solo album Hank Plays Cliff. Ending at the start.
