Biography
When Mouth & MacNeal, the duo that participated for Holland in 1974's Eurovision Song Contest disbanded at the end of 1974 Maggie MacNeal (born Sjoukje van 't Spijker in 1950) started a highly succesful solo career. Maggie, meanwhile married to Frans Smit and so now Sjoukje Smit, rode high in the Dutch charts with songs like When You're Gone, Terug Naar De Kust (Gerard Joling's favourite song ever) and Fools Together. The last song gave her some success in South America. For 1980's Dutch final she submitted the song Amsterdam, hoping and praying that nobody would notice that she wrote the song herself. Amsterdam was chosen by a jury (there was no pre-selection this year) and reached one of the best results for Holland in the last twenty years. She was not able to continue the success of that song however. In the 90s Maggie resorted to presenting a karaoke programme for Dutch public TV, resulting in a quarrel with Gerard Joling who did a similar karaoke programme for Dutch commercial TV. Eventually the quarrel was settled and Maggie started recording again, resulting in 1997 in a remakes album and a new single Only Love.
