Iceland would take part in the 1986 Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. Their first act should be chosen during a televised national final with ten songs competing. Four different singers took place: Pálmi Gunnarsson, Eiríkur Hauksson, Erna Gunnarsdóttir and Björgvin Halldórsson. Each of them performed two songs solo and furthermore, Erna Gunnarsdóttir & Björgvin Halldórsson and Erna Gunnarsdóttir & Pálmi Gunnarsson each performed one duet.
The winner was chosen by an expert jury and only the top5 were announced. Pálmi Gunnarsson won with his entry Gleđibankinn, which was also the first song of the evening.
