Biography

Elpida, whose name in Greek means Hope, is one of the most popular female singers in Greece and Cyprus. She started singing when she was a little girl together with her brother who is a musician. The first success for Elpida was in 1972 at the "Salonica song contest" with the song "Den ton Ida" (I didn't see him). In the following years Elpida participated in many international song contests, winning numerous prizes in Greece and Cyprus and in foreign countries, among them Japan and Chile. In 1973 Greek Radio (ERT) declared her to be the most popular Greek singer.

Elpida has issued several albums and has appeared on many European TV channels, particularly in Germany. In 1979 Elpida represented Greece at the Eurovision Contest in Israel with Socrates. In 1982 she toured Germany with expatriate Greek singer Costa Cordalis. This year Elpida is representing Cyprus at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Tora Zo" composed by Cypriot Petros Yiannaki.

Petros Yiannaki was born in London in 1953 of Cypriot parents who had settled in England in 1933. He has studied commerce, advertising and marketing at the Kingston Polytechnic. In 1983 he returned to settle in Cyprus. He has loved music from a very early age and wrote his first song at the age of 7. In 1982 he studied music with professor Tony Albani and the mezzo-soprano Gitar Vymbiral. At the Salonica Song Festival in 1985 his song "Broken Dreams" won 3rd prize among 300 entries. He is single, working in Paphos and living in Nicosia.

Phivos Gavris was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1951. He has studied Greek language and literature in Athens and started writing poetry in 1970. Many of his poems have been published in Cyprus. Since 1979 he has also been a writer of lyrics for popular songs composed by various composers. He is married and is a bank clerk by profession. [Notes from the official 86 programme by NRK]
