Biography
It all began in 1983 - in a Benedictine Abbey where Marie-Louise Werth, cousins Ursin and Gion Defuns and Giusep Quinter were studying. They devoted their free time to music, practising and performing folk songs from their native Surselva region. It was not long before they began creating their own compositions. After finishing third and second in the preceeding national finals, it was third time lucky this year, with "Viver senza Tei". Since 1987 Furbaz have achieved increasing acclaim in Switzerland, with successful concert, radio and TV appearances, as well as recording dates. Their recording of "Da Cumpignia" topped the Swiss hit parade. Marie-Louise Werth leads the group on piano and, with her natural, fresh voice lending a special touch to the romantic charm of Romansch, she has emerged as the figurehead of Furbaz. Her talents are further enhanced by the male-voice trio of her companions.
Marie-Louise Werth has made a name as composer and writer. She has created the group's most successful compositions, having written the words and music for their three Eurovision entries to date. After starting school she began to receive piano tuition, and as a teenage pupil decided to make music her career. From 1981 she studied in Zürich at the Conservatory and the Academy of Music, and in 1987 obtained her diploma as a teacher of piano.
Benoît Kaufman is Musical Director of the orchestra specially assembled for the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest. He worked for 17 years with top French stars in Paris, and has since settled in Switzerland. [Notes from the Official 1989 programme]
