10 songs competed in the 1991 Icelandic national final. The winner was - again - chosen by eight regional juries and an additional expert jury.
Some well known faces were among the contestants: Helga Möller was part of the group ICY that represented Iceland on its debut in Bergen in 1986. Eyjólfur 'Eyfi' Kristjánsson competed in the four previous national finals finishing 3rd in 1987, 2nd and 3rd in 1988, again 2nd in 1989 and 6th in 1990. His duet partner Stefán Hilmarsson was part of the duo Beathoven that represented Iceland in 1988; as a solo performer he also finished 4th in the national final that year.
Stéfan & Eyfi changed the title of the song, which was actually called Draumur um Ninu (Dreaming of Nina), to the more international Nina. Erna Ţórarinsdóttir, one of the singers of the group that finished second, joined them in Rome as a backing singer.
