Biography
Miriam Christine Borg is the girl who had to refuse an invitation to participate in the "South Pacific Song Contest" in May because she won the Maltese national contest for this year's Eurovision hit song. This means that she will be in Oslo in May 18th, instead of Queensland, Australia. At the tender age of six, Miriam Christine had already won a first prize in a local singing contest on Malta. Since then, there have been many other prizes and high placings both at home and abroad. Last year she won the Malta Music Award "Best Newcomer".
Paul Abela was born in 1954 in Detriot, USA, of Maltese parents. His first instrument was the accordian, but he later changed to organ and piano. He composed his first song in 1971, and it placed second in the Malta Song for Europe. In 1978, he returned to the USA and studied at the Berkley College of Music, where he graduated in 1981. In 1982, back in Malta, he composed the rock opera Gensa, which was a great success. In 1989 he composed his second rock-opera Bastilja, and in 1991, he won Malta's Song for Europe. He then conducted his own song in the Eurovision Song Contest in Rome and ended up with a respectable sixth place. In Malmö in 1992, his entry won a bronze placing. This year, Abela composed four of the ten songs which qualified for the national final.
Alfred Sant has collaborated with Paul Abela for many years, and together, they have created some of the most popular songs in Malta. Alfred Sant's lyrics have been interpreted by the island's best-known musical artistes, and he also wrote the text for Malta's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1995. Sant has represented Malta in numerous international song festivals, such as Tokyo, Castlebar, Cavan, Vina del Mar and Cesme in Turkey. [Notes from the Official 1996 Programme by NRK]
