Biography
The performer Aiste Smilgeviciute was born in Plunge in 1977 (North-West of Lithuania). She is a 4th year student of classical philology at the Vilnius University and singer with Lithuanian rock group Skyle. She won the National selection organized by LTV (Lithuanian Television) programme Muzikinis viesbutis (Musical Hotel) at the Vaidila Theatre on December 27, 1998 in Vilnius which was broadcast on New Year’s Night with the song Strazdas (Thrush - name of the bird). 10 singers and groups participated in The National selection.
The song, ethnic with Celtic overtones and a saxophone solo, is a favourite with many fans although few believed it would score many points. Despite the difficult notes Aiste performed the song well even if she looked a little lonely on the vast set.
