Eight singers took part in the national final and the winners were chosen by televoting. All the songs had to be performed in Icelandic, but the winning song Birta was translated to Angel for Copenhagen.
Actually, 2Tricky competed as Kristján Gíslason & Gunnar Ólason in the national final. Kristján Gíslason already took part in the Icelandic selection in 1991 with two songs which finished 2nd an 10th. Eyjólfur Kristjánsson won the 1991 final along with Stéfan Hilmarsson to finish 15th.
