Eurovision: "I can't say what it is"
United Kingdom: Cheryl interviewed on Irish television
Cheryl Baker, who is on a whirlwind trip of Ireland, appeared yesterday on TV3 Ireland's XPOSÉ and was interviewed by reporter Aisling O'Loughlin.
Aisling: For Euroviison 1981, where did you get the skirts idea from in your performance?
Cheryl: It was an idea, we didn't know whether if the song was a 1960's type song where we would have worn a mini skirt or a 1950's rock'n'roll type song where we would have worn knee length skirts. So I came up with the idea, which I thought was only a joke, "why don't we have both." Everyone said that's a great idea but at the time I thought they wouldn't take the idea seriously but they did. So we wouldn't have won Eurovision if it wasn't for the skirts!
Aisling: Ireland came last in Eurovision 2007, last year!
Cheryl: So did we (UK 2003). We're old Europe that's the trouble.
Aisling: What is your opinion of the contest now?
Cheryl: It's... It's... I can't say what it is.
Aisling: Do you think it's (Eurovision) is fixed?
Cheryl: I don't think it's fixed but I think its as politically wrong as it could ever possibly be.
Aisling: This year for Ireland we have Dustin the Turkey representing us at Eurovision 2008. Have you heard his song?
Cheryl: I havn't heard his song. I know his uncles or cousins are Podge & Rodge. If he's got the humour who what Podge & Rodge have got...
Aisling: He's even worse than them.
Cheryl: ...I think you've got a very good chance of winning.
Aisling: Now Cheryl, you look absolutely fantastic but you did suffer from hair loss.
Cheryl: Yes, it happened when I had my kids and when I went through the menopause and it's hard. For men, they expect or accept to lose their hair for women it's not. So I'm here promoting a product that promotes hair growth. I take it because I want my hair in good condition and I want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Aisling: Thank you Cheryl and I hope you enjoy your time in Ireland.

Blimey, I'd better run to see a doctor then, in addition to having to read the whole interview all over again to see what is it that I got wrong first time around.
Darko S, you have serious issues. She never said at any stage that 'new' countries are to blame for her menopause. Clearly you didn't understand the article.
Some people are sick...
@ w g
If you think Cheryl is "dissing" the contest in general, you are missing the point. Certainly until a few years ago she often spoke positively of the ESC how it helped her then and how it is still great fun, but her grip is with the ESC of the last 5 years or so and you got to admit, looking at various increasingly predictable voting patterns it is difficult to deny.
Sure, some "popular" songs do well, but NONE from the unpopular west unless there is a gimmick!(eg. lordi, alf, sanomi....)
when certain popular favourites get underrated, is it any coincidence they are all from the West? (germany 2006, belgium, 2006, switzerland 2007, spain 2007, sweden 2007, netherlands 2005, andorra 2007.....)
generally, much as I LOVED the contest (note that i am speaking in the past tense here), cheryl baker is referring to how recent trends are a sad indictment of the contest today and i am finding it difficult to blame those from the west questioning the future.
there is more chance of italy winning the six nations than returning to eurovision.
the whole reason for her trip was to publicise the hair loss treatment, its not her fault that people constantly ask about eurovision, so please dont criticise her for talking about the hair loss product, maybe the people doing the interviews should broaden their range of questions insted of showing lazy journalism
Thank god it was hair loss and not incontinence.
ha ha ha i have to laugh at the way the interview went from eurovision to hair loss?? Such a contrast! But Cheryl is a nice woman.... were all the other Bucks fizzes killed in a crash or something? I thought i heard that and hse the only survivor but can never sing again or something.
The wording below came out a bit wrong it should read:
Was it Regaine...?
I just read the interview, and was completely shocked when he began asking her about her hair loss! Not only because it is something personal, but it has nothing to do with the ESC!
On second thought, it is quite an important issue for sufferers. What product did she use?
Was it Regaine…?
...Am I bovvered?
Peter Eriksson:
In fact, Amy has commented on this case. In an interview here on esctoday on Feb 9 Barry Viniker asked her about it and she answered "I didn't write the song, the songwriters have to do something if they want to".
Yeah I agree some comments, very Joe Orton though they are, might have been a tad vulgar.
I suggest that some people should go and chill out for a bit rather than rush to make a comment - regain a sense of proportion and peace - so they may avoid putting comments on the web that may not reflect well their real intelligence or personality
Amy Diamond. She's just an innocent little girl that've been robbed, she's the victim in this case, and you call her pathetic!? She havn't even comment this case! Your love for Paolo is not a reason enough to not see that his song is plagiarism!
And by the way, Amy is too old for the JESC!
However. I like cheryl and some other of the former ESC-participants, they're the only ones that dare to say that the ESC these days "sucks"!
Well since we're making it an Amy Diamond/Switzerland discussion I can say that plagiarism or not, Switzerlands's song is a million times better than that pathetic 10 year old's whining. Why doesn't she enter JESC ? my goodness me... we'll be sending unborn foetuses to melodifestivalen soon.
@ francisco - that was a top 10 not at top 5.
I wish the BBC would do a set of preview shows!!
You're calling her "silly cow"?.....OK, then! lol
And it doesn't matter of you like Paolo, becous it's the song that matters in a (real)SONG contest! "Era stupendo" is written and composed by a swede, so it's very possible that he've heard "It can only get better" and made a rip-off of it.
And who cares about the EBU anyway, they always act in a naive political correct way just like Amnesty and other silly organizations and things!
EBU wants see "good" songs in the ESC, and they doesn't care if they hurt another singer/composer/writer outside the contest. EBU got no moral!
Silly cow.
Also, I've had enough of people accusing Paolo of plagarising Amy Diamond. The piano melody is entirely different, and there are only some similarities in the vocals of the chorus. That does not make it a plagarism. Besides, the HoD meeting is over and the EBU hasn't said anything about songs getting disqualified, so get over yourselves.
The interview posted above did not reveal anything new. In fact it must be one of the worst interviews in TV history - asking a 27-year-old question, asking what Cheryl thought of Ireland's entry, and if she's going bald?! Not exactly Parkinson standard was it! LOL. At least Cheryl admits the UK wouldn't have won in 81 if it wasn't for the skirts. Of the 4 standout songs in 81 (Germany, France, Switzerland and UK) we were the least likely to win based on song quality. Yet we still did it AND with a jury!
As for the subject, I completely agree with w g. All most former entrants do is brood about the good old days before the "Eastern scourge". Understandable but tedious.
I couldn't endure more than 30 seconds of Amy's whine but I see what you mean in relation to the Swiss entry, which borrows very liberally from her song to put it mildly. This also explains why the Swiss entry was made to progress from a ballad to a stampede - to mask the obvious references.
The good thing is her song is not particularly original itself - it's all so heard before. The bad thing is - how low can you sink to be lifting stuff from Amy Diamond.
About Era stupendo, what can we do? Who to complain to? Does anybody know anything about the voting system in use? I mean, is it 1 vote = 1 point?
Yeah, Switzerland should get disqualified!
Yes, "Era stupendo" is a clear case of plagiarism of "It can only get better"!
But. EBU will of course not disqualify switzerlands entry, it would be political incorrect in their opinion!
ESC is a contest without respect for the rules!
SWISS SONG MUST BE CANCELLED. IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME WITH THIS: Amy Diamond - It Can Only Get Better
PROOF: url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogu0sd1fHNw&feature=related]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogu0sd1fHNw&feature=related/url]
EXACTLY THE SAME. EBU WAKE UP.
I think it's a real shame when former Eurovision stars come out and diss the Contest like this. All it does is contribute to the growing public disdain for the ESC based on any number of tired clichés. Bucks Fizz actually won the thing - they have nothing to be bitter about! Lulu was the same - she went on Irish TV in 2002 and said she thought the ESC should be scrapped - why? Why say something so aggressive? If she doesn't like it she doesn't have to watch it.
I think maybe the time has come to get over the 'political voting is wrecking the Contest' debate (at least until May 20th!). We all know it happens (although some of us will never acknowledge that it does), but great songs are still winning. And anyway, this too will pass... The 50s were all about the French, the 90s were all about Ireland, the 00s are all about a resurgent East taking the rest of us by surprise... the 10s will be about something else.
you should prob think about how you phrase your writing?
I'll take that into serious consideration, Aggie.
yeah but reading what you wrote it dosen't "show" what you meant.. I read it bitter & twisted.. you should prob think about how you phrase your writing?
@Francisco Mateo Artero Demetrio:
can you please explain what your prediction has ANYTHING to do with this article??
you're not the only one.. and frankly it amazes me everytime?
