"From Eurovision to hair dressing"

France: Whatever happened to Virginie Pouchain ?

This year's French choice (and controversy around it) is certainly no stranger to media attention at Eurovision. This Saturday's edition of daily "Aujourd'Hui en France" tells the story of Virginie Pouchain, who represented France in Athens, two years ago. "From Eurovision to hair dressing" is the title of the article, which says that the young singer is now working part time as a hair dresser in her native Ardèche which was already her job before Eurovision.

"She still is a local star", the journalist writes. "Here, people don't understand why I didn't record anything right after Eurovision", Virginie declares. "The bad result didn't affect me that much. Being anonymous again within a short time had no bad influence on me. I received some proposals, none of them appealed to me". Asked on Tellier's song in English, Virginie answers : "Eurovision was made to present each country's musical culture. But, as more than one half of the songs are performed in English,  maybe it offers more chance to win". On another page of this Saturday's edition, "Aujourd'hui En France" gives the result of its survey on the language issue. 70% of the people who took part find it shocking to have a French song performed in English.

Currently, Virginie is working together with guitarist Pascal Jania, preparing a special show comprising songs of Francis Cabrel. More details on Virginie's website here.

@ Cristina Giuntini
Morgan meant that on his personal list Virginie comes on # 9, as I've understood it...
btw.: I agree with Fatals Picards and Sébastien Tellier. IMO France is among the countries who ended up the most in recent times in a undeserved bad position, along with Germany, Portugal, Andorra and perhaps also Belgium...

Jonatan Cerrada... *puke*

@Morgan, in 2006 France came 22nd, not 9th.
@Anthony, "how dare any of you say..." is a bit of a strong expression: everyone has his/her own opinion. I'm mad about Les Fatals Picards and Sebastien Tellier, while I found Virginie's song absolutely boring. Mind you, among my all-time ESC favourites there are Gerard Lenorman and Jonatan Cerrada.

I'm still happy to listen to that song from time to time (among many other great songs at the ESC), and wish that victory were not so important to such a lot of people. If less countries wanted to win at any cost, we would have much better music at the ESC!

Does anybody know what happened to Annick Thoumazeau (France 1984)? It's one of my all-time favourite French entries, but there's no much info about her. It seems her fate was similar to Virginie's and Christine Minier's... :(

I thought her song 'Il est temps' was wondeful - a gentle, classic French entry. I suppose it's symptomatic of the road the ESC has gone down in the last few years when costumes, fireworks and stage antics seem to matter more than the song.

I did not much like her song - it was a little flat to me. It reminded me of Cuvaj se duso by Donna Ares from my country. Technically, it was a very powerful performance and very well done - like Cuvaj se duso - but it wasn't attractive to me.

However, I really did like her. She seemed to have an extreme abundance of common sense, if that makes sense. A very admirable girl.

I agree with her that Eurovision should be able sharing our culture. It doesn't have to be traditional music - or we'd send basically the same song every year - but it should be in our languages and it should reflect something of our countries, even if it is just what happens to be the popular music in our country at the moment.

I love virginie pouchain, and and how dare any of you say her performance wasnt good. She performed the best in Athens, and she was much better than Lordi or any other song. SHE WAS THE BEST> VIRGINIE POUCHAIN 12 POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WINNER
IL ETAIT TEMPS

i agree that Fatals Picards were much better and great in 2007.. I still find 2006 the worst year ever, France manages a surprising 9th place with a very boring entry, "Vous c'est nous" was much more interesting.. it would have forced her to get backing singers and get a live performance..

Virginie Pouchain had a wonderful song with her - I felt so sorry for her that she obviously hadn't enough force to sing it like she did in the studio version...

But Les Fatals Picards were much better than her - that is the true winner of 2007 IMO... energetic, young, fresh, original, creative, catchy, witty... the Frenglish-idea was great... and I liked both ideas of interpretation (the choreography they did in the national preselection and the final presentation as well...)
But of course, this song had to end up on the same place like Scooch, miles away from Sarbel, Kenan Dogulu or Dima Koldun...

I don't know how somebody dared to say this was the worst song in 2006. Have you forgotten that horror we got from Moldova? And it qualified directly to the final. It was dreadful!!!

Les Fatals Picards were totally forgettable. I couldn't stand that bald guy running around the stage like crazy. I don't know why they portrayed the song in such a ridiculous way. That's why nobody took them seriously.

Hmm......I am not sure, it seemed that France didn't want to win in 2006. It was not only the singer, the song wasn't top 20 material too and strangely everyone knew it before the ESC and France still send her. I fear this years entry won't do much better - not because of the language but the song is simply too weak and will get lost. Might get a Fatales result at best.

just in iceland, I agree Les Fatals Picards were the most original entry in 2007

Christine Minier was a hair dresser before and after esc 1987 too.. it's not that surprising. And it's not just bad results, the great Nathalie Santamaria scored 4th in esc 1995 and stayed an anonymous to everyone but esc fans..

it's just not "in" to do esc this year ; a lot of big names were talked to for esc 2008, some of them were interested but the CD productions always refuses that one of their artists would dare esc... therefore thanx Sebastien Tellier and let's not go on forever with the language...

Am I the only person who liked Vous C'est Nous better than Il Etait Temps? Then again I liked Donne-Moi Du Temps (what I could hear of it) better than A Chaque Pas for Jonathan Cerrada too...

- Darko S.

Yeah, I read about that. Apparently her previous employers took up a full 2 page spread in the newspaper saying Niamh could have the following Monday off if she won!! :)

Anyway, Virginie deserved more points than she got, its a travesty she got beaten by such songs as Croatia and Moldova, sorry to any Croatians and Moldovans!!!! :D

It is a beautiful song but I think nerves on the night spoilt her performance. I have an instrumental version of the song and it is a haunting melody. It is no surprise having been written by Corneille.

Mario Mir [44111]

The song was nice (better than 2007 and 2008), but the performance seemed too amateurish.

Well she's not the first one to return to her day job. Niamh Kavanagh too went straight back to her building society counter (or whatever it was she did for a living previously). And to think that she even won the damned thing.....

Sorry, to me it was the worst song in 2006 ESC.

Sorry, but I am struggling to recall her and her song...
