Exclusive interview with D J Balthazar and Deep Zone

Bulgaria: Promo tour arrives in London

The day after the UK Eurovision Preview Party, esctoday.com's Russell Davies, met in London with D J Balthazar and Deep Zone, the Bulgarian representatives in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest.

Welcome to London!  It was great to see you last night at the UK Eurovision Previews party.  Even though you were not performing, it was so cool that you came along to enjoy the party and meet the fans.  What did you think of the event?

It was a really fantastic party and so nice for us to meet many of the Eurovision people for the first time.  We met with the entrants from Ukraine, Belarus, Bosnia Herzegovina - people we had only read about in articles on websites. The atmosphere in the club was just wicked! We really had a lot of fun.  During the night we did something really crazy; we went on on to the dance floor to hand out card and cds.  The fans were really surprised and amazed to see see us.  They kept on saying 'is it really you' - it was really nice for us.

It was a celebration of freeness and music.  For us it was interesting to see that the crowd there were really mixed and that the Eurovision music has no boundaries, it did not matter if you were gay or straight, we were there to celebrate the music and the new world - so everyone is welcome to Eurovision - definitely.

From a DJ's point of view - what did you think of DJ Dave set at the party last night?

He was really fantastic.  He played a great selection of retro and new Eurovision songs that we had not heard before and of course it was great to see how much the fans were enjoying the music he was playing.

When DJ Dave played DJ Take Me Way there was a huge positive reaction on the dance floor.  How do you plan to transfer this positive energy to the stage in Belgrade?

Right now we are preparing our show for Eurovision.  It will differ a lot from our show in the national final in Bulgaria. It will have better choreography, brand new styling, new costumes made by a Bulgarian designer.  We will also have our laser harp, which will be played by Rosco.  The laser harp is a unique instrument that pays a tune when you touch a laser. In Belgrade we will allow the journalists to touch it and play some tunes on the harp, so they can try for themselves.

Also, we have one very big surprise.  It is the world premiere of a Vestax Guitar Turn Table.  This is DJ turn table in the shape of a guitar and it will the world premiere of this instrument in Belgrade.  It is wonderful for us, as it allows the DJ to be in front of the DJ booth so we can move around the stage like rock stars or a singer.  We can promise you an unique, spectacular presentation of this new DJ instrument.  It is an interesting fact that only one of these instruments exists in the world, a prototype that is not for sale.  It was really hard to get it from Japan - but we made it!

We also have in our team Peter our breakdancer.  He is best knows as The Man Machine, he has breakdanced in many other national contests and is one of the best.  We are a big team with big abilities, however our best weapon is our fabulous singer Joanna.

DJ Take me away is a great club anthem, is very radio friendly and could be a big summer hit all over Europe.  Do you plan a promotional push for the song after Eurovision?

Actually, we already have a record deal with a Dutch record company, ToCo International.  They are responsible for the world wide release of DJ Take Me Away.  We really hope to finish in the top 10 in Eurovision, but without this we plan to continue pushing with the promotion of the song, because in our opinion it is a great track.

Did you write the song especially for the contest?

Yes, it is especially written for Eurovision.  We wanted to have a unusual Eurovision track, something that would stand out on the stage and people would remember.  A lot of the songs in Eurovision can be quite similar and we did not want this for our song. We think Eurovision needs a fresh face. Many people think that Eurovision still sounds like ABBA; now we are in 2008 and things have changed.  Eurovision needs a huge internatonal hit that people can dance to in the clubs, buy in the shops, listen on the radio and sing in the shower.

It is very important that the Eurovision winner is a huge hit.  Pop dance is now very commercial and everyone is going to the clubs.  That is why we are dedicating this song to all the people who go to the clubs and enjoy the night life.  We also decicate the song to all the DJ in the world around the world because DJs nowardays are the key element in our lives.

Finally, do you have a mesage for our esctoday.com readers?

It would be very good for the fans and viewers of the best music show in the world to go for originality and to make a real new fresh face for Eurovision.  So the choice is yours - vote for the right song!

Great song and will most probably qualify!! :)

I dont understand people saying that it is hardly a song just because it only has 4 lines!!! Remember last years entry? Well because if I remember it had just as many words!!!

Probably so many people keep saying the words 'boring' and 'repetitive' because it reminds them that for once, Eurovision actually stars a song that has something to do with today's music industry!

I mean, okay, songs like the Balkan ballads are good quality etc, but most of them (especially the abba-style europop *urgh*) wouldnt stand a chance in the charts or the general public if they werent linked to Eurovision...

I really like Bulgarias song and I really think they will be top 5 or perhaps the winner. Compared to songs say Russia, Sweden, Armenia, it makes these countries look rather outdated..

(ps. please note I do appreciate the ballads, especially songs like Portugal... great song and I hope it finishes top 5 like it deserves!)

No I think that this year the song is much better than last year.It is so different and very nice to lisen to it at a club. Here in Greece the dj to the most of the clubs play it every night and the people go crazy with its rythm. This hapen only with the Bulgarian song and the Greek one (My secret combination). Both are hilarious and up tempo songs.I love them.Kisses from Greece.

This song is too bad for me, last year was better , good luck Bulgaria

[b]@BURR
Pleace stop with that Prodigy! You repeat it in evry article about Bulgaria!

@Simon
This will only make top 10 because its Bulgaria, if this was coming from France it wouldn't stand a chance.
France have very huge loby in ESC!With more then 30 year-history!I think people are voting for there favourite song not for a country!Big 4 are less voted maybe because they dont join in the semis :) And Bulgaria is saported only from Greece and Macedonia and sometimes Cyprus! One Example:Why Kaffe end 26 in Semi and Elitsa and Stojan end 5! Because of the song!So dont worry! If Uk have a song which can win you will do it because of your loby! But this year you have no chance sorry :(

Is this even a song, it only has four lines! I still kind of like it though. This will only make top 10 because its Bulgaria, if this was coming from France it wouldn't stand a chance, I'm not anti east at all. Just an observation.

I actually think the tune has some impact the first time you hear it. I really liked it originally although it has lost some of its appeal cos mostly because I really think she is gonna hit quite a few bum notes on the night, but I hope I am wrong.

Excuse me! DO they really think this boring and repetitive piece of music will be a world wide hit? I doubt that very much. It will be played in a small selection of clubs probably for a couple of months after the contest - Whereas ABBA have grown to be a legend.
My british friend told me that this woman went around the preview party with flyers and asked people to vote for them! It takes more than a laser harp and a guitar turntable to make a worldwide hit!
