@ Keith Timmons

Sweden result was really extreme last year. That doesn't mean that no one liked their song. But the northern countries like it SO MUCH more than the other countries because of the diaspora/neighbour voting effect. Those countries have an interwoven music market. The Ark was already famous in those countries before the contest. And it also helps that some Swedes are living in some of those countries. That gives Sweden a big advantage. Televoting is really biased because a lot of people are only voting for their home country and/or for singers they already know because they are famous in their own countries. A previously unknown singer form a country relative far away has it really much harder to get points. And most countries can't improve their chances with sending a famous singer because most singers they have are only known in their own countries and perhaps a few neighbour countries but not in all ESC countries.

@ P. Eriksson

"No! Sweden doesn't got any neighbour/pro-states that CONSTANTLY votes for us, that's true, take a look at the scoreboards and you'll see!!

Sweden and Greece (if you count it as a western country) are the only western countries which clearly have a significant advantage through diaspora/neighbour voting. Other western countries have perhaps one or two friendly countries where they get usually some points from, but that is not comparable with the points Sweden and Greece get thanks to diaspora/neighbour voting. There are of course also a lot of eastern countries without a lot of sure points. It is not just western European countries who have an disadvantage because of the very biased televoting.

Sweden may not get every year 12 points from the same few countries BUT as long as their song is not absolute horrible they WILL get some points from nothern European countries. It is MUCH MORE PROBABLE that Sweden get points from Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, than that for example Spain get points from those countries. So Sweden has at least 4 friendly countries, which are more than most other ESC countries have.

Just look at the scoreboard from last year which is the best example for this. Sweden got the 18. place with 51 points. It got points from ONLY 6 countries: Andorra (2 points), Denmark (12), Finland (8), Iceland (10), Norway (12), United Kingdom (7). Finland which got the 17. place with 53 points got points from 10 countries and Germany which reached the 19. place with 49 points got points from 12 countries that are DOUBLE so much countries than in the case from Sweden. And the best thing is that even Spain on the 20. place (43 points) got their points from 9 countries. The ESC last year was a good example for the advantage Sweden has through diaspora/neighbour voting. It is of course not as big as the advantage that for example Russia, Serbia and Turkey have, BUT it is bigger than that of most other ESC countries. Without the northern European countries Sweden would have got ONLY 2 points from Andorra last year and Andorra did use a jury.

@ Fabio Deluca

"Sorry, but no one country has even won thanks to diaspora votes."

Turkey won the ESC 2003 with ONLY 2 POINTS more than Belgium. I am sure that without Turkey's diaspora advantage, Belgium would have won.

Fabio Deluca [37739]

Sorry, but no one country has even won thanks to diaspora votes. Finland won in 2006, I wonder how many Finns are living around in Europe, besides Finland. Same about Serbia in 2007. To win you have to get votes from as many countries as possible. If not, look at the ex-Yugo countries. They may get votes from the other former Yugoslavian countries, but that not enough to win.

This theory about the diaspora is just a cheap excuse perpetrated by the Western countries, as an excuse for their poor performances. They don't get votes because their songs are not appealing for the people. Finland managed to get everybody's attention in 2006, Serbia too. That's the only way to win these days.

@Benjamin Johnson

That is true. That is a problem. ESC here in Puerto Rico start at 4.00pm. I think is a great hour but what about New Zealand, Australia, etc? I think a World Song Contest will be better.

@ El Hot
It's not "a bit harder" for a Western country, it's nearly impossible... Can you tell me where f. ex. Germany's votes should come from?
The only two countries who were halfway friendly with a few points were Spain and Switzerland - our remaining neighbour countries don't give us constantly points...
Germany in my opinion has NO possibility to win the Contest at the moment - the same goes for France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Andorra and a few other Western countries... I hope I'll be proved wrong but I'm sure I won't...

@ P.Eriksson

I also saw your idea.

Problem the time zones!

Example: which time ESC would start in New Zealand?

Think of that first!

P. Eriksson

Sweden HAS neighbours that constantly vote for us, Norway, Denmark, Finalnd, and Iceland too actually. And the west countries gives as much for their neighbours as the east. The only difference is that there are more countries in east. And if some country in the east has a great song, it will probably win, if some country in the west has a great song, it can win too, but it will be a bit harder cause there are less countries there.

Paolo Meneguzzi II [20263]
Wed 7 May 2008 01:06:58

P. Eriksson: "we haven't got any neighbouring countries that constantly vote for us". Errr... what about Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Estonia? How many more "pro-states" do you want??

P.S. "we doesn't got...we doesn't got... we doesn't got". Are there any Swedes who actually know how verbs work in English?

P. Eriksson [28468]
Wed 7 May 2008 00:53:55

Of course Sweden won't win!
We doesn't got any big diaspora in Europe, we doesn't got any neighbour/pro-states that constantly votes for us, and we are after all a Western country!
I actually doubt if Sweden will qualify at all!

John Smith [47209]
