Eurovision Song Contest Belgrade 2008 Serbia

Live from Belgrade [UPD]

Day 1: Montenegro, Israel, Estonia and Moldova

The first day of rehearsals are now underway and this morning, Montenegro, Israel, Estonia nad Moldova will complete their first technical rehearsals and press conferences. You can read the reviews below from the rehearsals and later today, our media partner, 12points.tv will provide video footage.

Song 1: Montenegro: Zauvijek volim te

Stepfan Filiovic was the first performer to take the stage on the stunning Eurovision stage this morning.  Appearing with four female backing dancers gave a strong vocal performance for this song Zauvijek Voliim Te.  Stephan performs in front of the stage for the first half of the song, is joined for the second half for some interesting  interaction which includes him recieving a facial slap from one of his backing singers.

Song 2: Israel: Fire in your eyes

Lights are turned down as Boaz Mauda walks onto the stage for the second song this morning.  He sings the first verse on his own and is latter joined by five male backing singers.  The rendition of Boaz Mauda has a more ethnic and instrumental feel that it did in the Kdam this year.  The five singers harmonise very well with Boaz's vocals. The song is performed in Hebrew throughout apart from one line in English. During the latter half of the song there is plenty of movement around the stage by the backing singers. They all join Boaz at the front of the stage in group formation for the final lines of the song.

Song 3: Estonia: Leto Svet

The blonde backing dancers are on stage waving the Serbian flag from the off, and expect the crowd to take to them very quickly. The stage goes rastafarian with gold red and green flashing everywhere. The boards featuring cakes and other foods are also there. The band jump and prance around the stage shouting the song rather than singing and the grand finale features a cheerleading style finish with a pyramid of blondes above our slightly oversized gentlemen.
The colourcheck revealed that the band's jackets will be cream orange and blue. In all, most of the performance mirrors the victorious strategy from Eurolaul, but the quality on the Eurovision stage appears to have slipped a little.

Song 4- Moldova - Geta Burlacu -  A Century of Love

Geta starts her song by sitting on a couch whilst a man with a trumpet in hand is seated next to her on the floor. No other performers are on the stage for this song. Plenty of neon lights are displayed on the screen behind the two performers to great effect.  The musical structure of the song has been changed to include some additional jazz elements, as well as chance key chance to increased temp of the song for the last section. The song finishes with Geta being wrapped in a blanket by her male companion whilst sitting costly on the couch.  Presentation of this song has greatly improved from the performance in the Moldovan National final.

Montenegro. Voice is good and performance easy, but too easy to remember it after 19 songs. But I have to say, I warmed up to this one, but it has so low chances for the final, that I just have to lay back and enjoy the song, cause the rest, I mean performance, is hundred times seen.
Israel. Nice touch, to change so borring women backing singers, to male singers. That was wise done. If this still was the song and performer contest it probably would sail easy to the final, but in nowdays I'm not sure that this is good enough to go futher. Nothing that would WOW me from this performance. Easy - one step left, one step right and then forward...that's about it in this performance. Maybe it would even be better if he sung it alone, without any backs. But it could get jury's votes.
Estonia. I still find this funny, but it's too much happening on the stage. Thos flags and signs distracted me from the performers. They could drop all additional atributes and maybe stay with just dancers, as they themselves take all the attention, and there is no need to make something else. As people have just too eyes :Lol and I wasn't able to follow everything what happened on stage.
Moldova. I just don't like this song and that's it. For me too simple performance and nothing special to rember it.

Montenegro. The song is nothing special and interesting. Sorry, but i think it will not qualify

Israel. The song is very very beautiful in the beginning and you are waiting for something more when it goes a little down. Although Boaz's voice is very pleasant. So far i think Israel is the best of those 4 entries and has a good chance to qualify.

Estonia. Sorry, i didn't like it and don't think it will qualify.

Moldova. The song is not bad, but some kind of boring. It can qualify.

Darn me for my sins but Estonia is so funny now to me. So much better than the dire Israeli song. They should scrap the English part completely and pray for a miracle.

The Montenegrin song is not bad at all. I didn't like it at first, and it's not one of my favourites now either. But the song is quite enjoyable, I don't skip it anymore when playing the ESC album. Should I add Stefan is (maybe) my fav guy this year? Haha, I think he's gorgeous!

Israel bores me to death. Sorry, Boaz, but the song is a sleeping pill. And your voice hardy save it.

Moldova is one of my favorites, but I am not sure about that coach on stage. It's not an atractive performance, it was better in the national final.

Fortunately, Boaz Mauda does not go that high during the chorus, like in the studio version (these high notes make me cringe). But I don't see Israel in the final, one way or another. He won't qualify.

I also love the fact that it seems more colourful at last, after 2 consecutive years with "dark" lighting.

Moldova is by far the best stage performance. I loved Israel (its what i m voting in the semi), but plz change the concept. The male vocals r too many and too loud resulting in chaotic climax. Plus the stage action seems rather confused. The Vocals should either interact with boaz or stay still.
PLZ Israel change the stage performance

The stage is superb and so are the colours! Can't wait to be in the arena!!!

About the rehearsala, I like Israel though Boaz can still improve and although the Montengrin song is boring, the vocals are not bad and it's nice but of course it won't qualify (most likely).
No comment about Estonia, this is worse than nothing.

Stage small? It's even too big in my opinion.
But it looks good, just shame the night starts off with so many boring or bad songs. Many wiewers will qucikly lose interest. That's why a draw not always is a smart method.
