Bulgaria: Interview with Deep Zone & DJ Balthazar
Hi guys and thank you for your time today. Can you tell me about your feelings about not qualifying form the semi final last Thursday.
'Today is not difficult anymore, yesterday was very difficult for us, particularly as it was Joanna's birthday. However, we are very happy to be on the Eurovision stage and very happy with our performance. Of course, the first few minutes when we found out we did not qualify was very difficult and we felt very disappointed, but this is normal of course. After, 1 day of thoughts and discussions, we know know that it was not too important that we did not qualify. Our goals were achieved'.
What were these goals?
'Firstly, it was to show on a big stage that Bulgaria can deliver fresh, original and interesting modern music. And secondly, that our song touched many people during this week. We had one of the biggest applause from the audience in the venue, we are very happy about this. It was also wonderful to hear our song all around Belgrade. The security guard at our hotel has our song as his ring tone, we could her DJ Take Me Away on the radio , in the taxi , shops and clubs. It is really nice that the people have taken to our song.
We feel that in a few months people will forget about a lot of the songs in the Eurovision final. They will not remember who finished outside the top three. We hope that we have given the people something to remember. We feel that our goals have been delivered and that we did a great show. We were already winners before we arrived in Belgrade and this has not chanced'.
How did it feel to appear on the Eurovision stage?
'We had one of the greatest 3 minutes of our lives. We can still hear the cheers and the applause of the people in the hall. It was truly a wonderful experience'.
Is there anything your are unhappy about?
'The only thing we not really happy about is the new rules for the qualification form the semi final. We find that this is very limiting for the smaller countries like Bulgaria. We feel that the system is not perfect and that all countries should be allowed to vote. If not then it is smaller courtiers like San Marino, Cyprus and Malta who will suffer'.
Why do you think you did not qualify to the final?
'We are not really sure, but maybe our audience was not watching the show on Thursday. The song is more suited to the clubs and is not fitting with the normal song you would see in the Eurovision Song Contest. We wanted to send an unusual song to Eurovision and we know that it would be risky. But some times you have to take positive and well as negative response and this is the chance we took. Maybe, our song is for the younger generation and they were not watching the show last Thursday. At least we are very proud that we gave a great show'.
What is the feed back you have received for your performance and not qualifying to the final?
'The media coverage we have been receiving from Bulgaria is very positive. They can not understand why we did not qualify. Also, we have had wonderful feedback from the UK with hundreds of positive responses on You tube. Also positive reaction from Iceland, Netherlands, Greece and Turkey. This means so much to us'.
What are your plans for the future?
'After our huge promotional campaign for the Eurovision Song Contest, our aim is that DJ Take Me Away will be a huge summer hit. The song is already a hit in Greece, Romania and Ukraine and we have singed a number of licensing contracts. This means that our song will be on compilation albums in these countries as well as Hong Kong and Singapore. The song is also being picked up in Canada and North America and we just received an approach from South Africa.
We will release an english version of our Bulgarian album and we have a national tour of Bulgaria planed for the summer. Our Eurovision campaign has open many doors for us; we now have many new contacts including the UK. Our act is best suitable to the club scene and we are interested in performing in many clubs throughout Europe. Who would also like to remix version of this years songs. We have been asked to remixes song for Philip Kirkorov and Mor ve Oteri from Turkey. We will also have a new single out in September'.
Thank you very such for allowing esctoday this exclusive interview. I would just like to say that you have been one of the most popular delegation in this year's contest and certainly the most fun. Best of luck for the future.

Great Job Bulgaria!
Even though the lead singer is as thick as a plank of wood.
Thank you so much for that support, guys. Thank you.
My very best wishes for all of you, from Sofia.
It was great entry! Really
DJ Balthazar is hot

@ Vladimir P - Don't worry I like Belarus and Czech Republic!
They had a really good song. Now when I think of it, I think the second semifinal was actually stronger than the final itself. Iceland, Sweden, Turkey, Albania, Portugal, Ukraine, Georgia, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Macedonia, Belarus, Czech Republic (although I'm aware that I'm probably the only fan of the last two). The only song that wasn't my cup of tea was the Latvian one.
Bulgaria was great. They deserved to qualify.
drusus 1:
I don't like this new "jury vote" rule either. Macedonia was in 10th place in the semi and should have qualified imo. But the juries didn't pick Sweden. Sweden was the country which had got their highest points out of the 10 countries not already chosen by the televoters.
Bulgaria had a great entry and I was sad it didn't make to the final
"'The only thing we not really happy about is the new rules for the qualification form the semi final. We find that this is very limiting for the smaller countries like Bulgaria."
What???? It benefits countries like that because it takes away dispora voting!!!! And besides Bulgaria is hardly a small country!
Good song but come on here the vocal and performance were definitely not up to par
However, on reflection if Georgia and Croatia can get through this should have stormed it
They were great - the jury should have picked Bulgaria instead of Sweden as Bulgaria got MORE support from the TELEVOTERS !!
You should have gone to the final guys!!!
You were the only country I've voted for and I'm proud I did that cos Malta gave you 2 points! Great thing for an usual country to vote for, in our case. :-)

For Bulgaria it would be surely better if everyone is allowed to vote in the semis because they would get votes from other south eastern countries. But exactly this is why the new rules for the semis are there. It was the goal to prevent neighbouring and diaspora voting and this is a good intention.
Bulgaria is also not so small in ESC terms. It has 7,6 million citizen and MANY countries at the ESC are smaller than that. Her comparision with San Marino, Cyprus and Malta is ridicouless. The biggest of those countries hasn't even more than 800.000 citizen and nearly no neighbours or emigrants living in other countries like Bulgaria has. They would clearly be even more at a disadvantage if all countries can vote in the semis.
I talked to Joanna in Belgrade, she was such sweet person :-) I heard that she was really sad the day after the the semifinal and so was I. Bulgaria was my favourite in the contest and to not see them qualifiying was maybe my biggest dissapointment in the contest.
Cyprus supported you by giving you 8points!!i voted for u!!suprise that it didnt make it!!
This song is soooooooooooooooooo good!!! I cant think of why it did not qualify! Like Fyrom too. 2 great songs that deserved to be at final and even top 5!
You deserved more points, the show was really great !!! But you know, Eurovision is sometimes strange ... When I see Georgia qualified and not Bulgaria...
Bulgaria...please, please, please!!! Send something original like this entry next year! You did so well choosing "DJ, Take Me Away"! As everyone has said, it was such a shame that this entry didn't qualify it would have been amazing to see it in the final!!! I haven't been able to stop listening to this song and the performance was one of the most impressive - I really want the album now
Such a shame they didn't passed
Elline Demetriou:
Thank you very much miss !
A rose for you: @-}-
alex P i loved it
this and switzerland should have passed
They were the best!Shame that they didn`t pass!
Thanks to all the people who voted for us, or just like our song.
Of course, the vocal was not very perfect, but the show was great.
Btw, if someone found our song like a Prodigy remix, there is alot of regulation how to alarm for that Svante or some other people in charge.
Best wishes to all.
I do agree the girl did find it hard enough even to sing those two dull lines, wearing and awefull out-of-plce- out-of-stule dress.
And guys next time out try to write your own songs and not to steal old PRODOGY's hits!!
Good luck!
Hope to hear from you very soon, guys ! A great song, definitely.
Unfortunately this performance of was just awful. The song was not bad but most people watch the songs for the first time on the night. And they were just awful! Gemrnay has every right to complain about the results of Texas in Athens but that was probably due to being too American for the way world is today. Still one of our fav songs ever though. German broadcaster needs to look to what others do to be succesful i.e. why is Greece so sucessful after decades of being nowhere??? It is pretty clear why if you just ask/look at what they are doing. Like the rest of the countries complaining it was not just the East that did not vote for Germany. It was just every one!
Yeah, it is a shame the jury wildcard got to Sweden, while the whole wildcard idea was to give countries who normally stayed in the semi a chance to get into the final. But that is the way things go, and everything went exactly according to the rules. So there is no need to talk about 'should' and 'would'.
As for Bulgaria, I think their performance was quite weak. Joanna had a very weak voice. And her dress was not suitable for the song.
The girl was really weak live and with no personality amongst all the big egos that passed on stage that night. I didn't like what she was wearing either. The whole package looked a bit messy, though the song was my 3rd favourite overall. One thing I loved were the live vocoders, probably not heard on stage since Telex in 1980.
