Terrence Higgins Trust

UK Eurovision Winners Party supports THT

The UK Eurovision Winners Party organisers have agreed to donate 10% of all ticket sales from Saturday night's event in London to the Terrence Higgins Trust. The charity has been supported by Ani Lorak and featured in a documentary filmed by Ukrainian television during her previous trip to the United Kingdom.

The line-up for Saturday's party includes:

  • 2008 Eurovision Song Contest Winner, Diman Bilan
  • 2008 Eurovision Song Contest runner-up, Ani Lorak
  • 1981 Eurovision Song Contest winners, Bucks Fizz
  • 1993 Eurovision Song Contest runner-up Sonia
  • 2000 Eurovision Song Contest UK entry, Nicki French

Ani Lorak has been working tirelessly to raise awareness about AIDS and HIV for many years. She is a Goodwill Ambassadress of the non - profit organisation "Designers Against AIDS". As part of the joint project, Ani and a young Ukrainian designer designed a special T - shirt, which was given to the guests and journalists who attended the sceening of her documentary in Belgrade. In 2004 - 2005 Ani Lorak was United Nations Goodwill Ambassador on HIV and AIDS In Ukraine.

She worked with the Terrence Higgins Trust during her 24 hour stopover in London in April for the UK Eurovision Preview Party. She made time to talk to some of the people that have sought help from the charity and footage was taken for a documentary to be broadcast in Ukraine to help raise awareness.

Organisers are keen to show their support for this worthwhile charity and will provide them with a greater presence at the event. 10% of all ticket sales will be donated to it.

Remaining tickets are priced at £12 in advance from the official website or via the ticketweb telephone booking line on 08700 600 100. Music will be provided by special Eurovision DJ Dave Simmons.

What the UK got what it really deserved -
just two votes from Ireland and a stadium-big San Something each year for the 4th time in a row!!!

I'm from the UK - and thought that the UK this year got what it deserved with the wrong song representing us, I agree that there was political voting in the contest as a whole - but the fact is that none of the West voted for the UK either.

As for Romania - Let Me Try (2005) is my third all time favourite Eurovision song - I've been watching since 1980, and was by far the best that year.

m.paluszkiewicz GO ISIS!!! :

I totally agree! Both the UK and Poland deserved much higher places. Poland deserved at least top 10 because Isis was amazing :) Greetings to Poland from the UK ;)

Till today I can't believe that Isis and Andy were 24. and 25. this year. It's fu***ng nonsense that artists like them became the last in "such a prestigeous song contes"... I'm so f**** pissed :-/
I'ts simplu not fair, who don't see that.... hmmm I can only say that he's blind, deaf or retardet.

Greeting to UK from Poland :)

Mike, I loved your mail. You forgot Belgium and the Netherlands where they sent all their artists to Siberia and changed them for some Armenians... Lovely. I would suggest to all the UK bashers, we won 5 times deserved, and you guys ????

And oh yeah, I will go tom evening and I will enjoy all those great entries from the UK.... I am French but want to thank my second home for all those great entries over the years, for being the best and wellcoming country in the world...

"D i e for you" and "Believe" are very similar. I've noticed it before. (How nice to see Shirley Clamp among the backing singers)

omg so when i saw the esc and i heard the russia song, it sounded familiar..... the last week i heard that timbaland is the producer. Today i heard 'believe' well and i heard a familiar beat in the backgroud, so i decided to hear other timbaland song to compare them...and i started with 'Apologize' of Timbaland ft. One Republic and i discovered that the back-beat is identical (just a bit louder) and even the tune is very similar! So thats why it sounded so familiar! Tajjeb eh! So all the countries work their guts out to be original then Russia send a remix of Apologize! At this rate we might as well just send Madonna or Rihanna

Moscow has been confirmed as the 2009 city -

" Moscow confirmed as Eurovision 2009 host city
THIS IS MOSCOW CALLING
It was a bit blur what will happen with the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest host city. It is now clear that Moscow will host the 2009 Eurovision edition. The news although impressive is not welcomed by the Eurofan community. Moscow is known as the most expensive city in the world and it will be hard for people to attend the show. We only hope Russian broadcaster does something about that.

UK was crap this year, it's not just my taste. It's the viewer's choice after all. It happened for them not to like it, and to prefere something real good and spectacular. So my taste is like the majority taste. Well deserved place for U.K thsi year, the last place. Well deserved place for Romania, also...20th, although 24 could have been good too, or 23...(it was a little better than Germany and U.K, so I'd say 23 Romania, 24 Germany = horror singing, with sound off it was kinda good, 4 cute girls...But with the sound ON....Horrible... And last but not least, 25th place UK)

Marc, you are quite right about the Romanian entries, but I live in Spain, and everybody here loves Romanian music, and all the songs, and that's why they always get 12 points from Spain. You hardly ever hear Spanish music these days, it's Romanian music everywhere, and there are always loads of great Romanian songs in the charts. Isabel Pantoja, Enrique Inglesias, even Montserrat Caballe, they are all recording songs in the Romanian style and language these days to cater for this new craze. Latin music is out. Flamenco is out, most Spanish people are now learning Romanian instead of English these days just so they can enjoy the lovely Romanian songs they are so mad about.
Even the fact that the streets are full of Romanian bag-snatchers and Romanian mothers that have taught their children to steal has not put people off this obsession with Romanian music.
Apparently something similar is happening in Irish, where fiddles and Irish jigs are out, and U2 albums are selling at an all-time low. All the Irish care about these days is Polish pop.
It's great to see Europe so integrated and appreciating each others culture so much. Long live the diaspora!!!

Lets get out of this farce of a compition all together and put the money the bbc gives to the EBU into decent tv programme.
The bbc has to listen to the public as its their money there spending.
I used to love eurovision but its got so political now enough is enough.

Ok you want to talk about good entries, let's have a look together to the Romanian ones
1994 : Dan Bittman (???????)
1998 : Eu Cred (Oldfashioned typical Esatern European music, plain awful)
2000 : The moon (I quite like that one)
2002 : Tell me why (Oldfashioned crap that got top 10 because of corruption)
2003 : Don't break my heart (cheap tacky, got top 10 because of neighbour votes)
2004 : I admit (well Sanda forgot to wear her clothes and sang this piece of kitsch in her underwear )
2005 : Let me try (ok was original and deserved good placing, although also helped by neighbours)
2006 : Tornero (ok song, cheap performance)
2007 : Ljubi... (Awful, screeming for votes)
2008 : Pe-O Margine (oldfashioned and for me did not deserved the final)

You see my friend, it's all very personal, maybe for you yhe UK entries are crap, I really do think thet Andy had one of the best songs and performances of the evening....

GeeOh * [44458]

No, it's not about east european countries and diaspora. It's about a good, catchy song, rather it's a ballad or up-tempo. The problem is U don't send the proper songs, that's it. I seriously doubt someone has anything against UK, or Germany, or France. But these don't send the right songs. Being so many countries in the contest, each country has to do something different, to get the attention. Of course the viewers will remember acts like Dima Bilan (with the ice ring, the skater and the violin), the amazing angel-devil thing and the pyros from Azerbaijan, Kalomoira's bih heart-shape book and her awesome dancers, Ani Lorak brilliant show with the mirrors and so on... The countries that have common shows (or no show at all) and common, boring songs (even though are decent and quality songs), they'll get no votes. Until U realize that, the situation will be like thet. So why complaining? Just send the right song, with an amazing show, and I'm sure U'll get plenty of votes (maybe not maby 12 p, but deffinetely will get votes from all or almost all the participant countries). It is possible. Like Romania could reached the Top 3 in 2005 and no. 4 in 2006 (back then, Tornero gained points from every single country in the contest, except Monaco and The Netherlands). So, if a small country like mine can do it, U.K can definetely do it. It's not about diaspora, it's about the god damn songs...

Jonny K [46883]
Fri 30 May 2008 16:39:44

And I have liked all of the UK songs since 1996, so its a matter of personal opinion as to whether you like a song, not what place it got at eurovision.

Jonny K [46883]
Fri 30 May 2008 16:37:17

GeeOh *:

What you're saying doesn't prove the UK entries are rubbish. I can guarentee that had an eastern country sent Javine, Daz or even Scooch, they would have got a top 10.

garry chelsea! [32082]
Fri 30 May 2008 16:33:38

and due to neighbourly voting the top 10 is already booked for your country geeoh

marc x [47152]
Fri 30 May 2008 16:32:49

I am only rude because your mail is rude my friend. And of all those entries, only Tornero was worth mentioning. And let's face it if UK had same diaspora as you Romanians, Uk would have have been just as often in top 10 as you guys. Or do you really think that a decent normal human being would vote for your crap ? Even more, in 2002, didn't we have that big corruption thing with the voting, where 7 countries made certain promises to each others.... Well, Eastern Europe, corruption, you wanna hear more ? I rather sent an ok song like Daz or this years UK entry than knowing I always get a good result because of the wrong reasons....

GeeOh * [44458]
Fri 30 May 2008 16:11:29

Marc X...Truth hurts, right? Well, I agree...Romania has some of the worst Eurovision entries...like the one in 1998 Malina Olinescu - Eu cred, 2000 Taxi - The moon; 2004 Sanda Ladosi - I admit; 2007 TodoMondo - Liubi, liubi I love you; 2008 Nico & Vlad - Pe-o margine de lume; But also Romania has sended good quality entries like the ones from 2002 Monica Anghel & Marcel Pavel - Tell me why (#9); 2003 Nicola - Don't break my heart (#10); 2006 Luminita Anghel & Sistem - Let me try (#3); 2006 Mihai Traistariu - Tornero (#4). So, no need to be rude. These are facts. At least we reached The Top 10 in the past years. What about UK? Ummm, let's see:

2000: Nicki French - Don't Play That Song Again (#16)
2001: Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible (#15)
2002: Jessica Garlick - Come Back (#3) wonderful entry[/i
2003: Jemini - Cry Baby (#26) (with 0 points)
2004: James Fox - Hold On To Our Love (#16)
2005: Javine - Touch My Fire (#22)
2006: Daz Sampson - Teenage Life (#19)
2007: Scooch Flying the Flag (for You) (#23)
2008: Andy Abraham - Even If (#25)

so...on top 10 only once for U.K this decade (in 2003)...Maybe if U arrogant guys will talk less and work harder, and put a real effort...then U'll have a good result. Until then, the bottom of the chart is booked for U... Good luck in 2009!

@GeeOh,

All those classy UK acts you name still have more class than whatever Romanian entry ever.... I am so fed up with everyone attacking the UK non-stop... And it's so funny, they all hate UK, but Roumanians, Armenians, Greeks, Cypriots, Russians, Ukrainians etc can not be here quickly enough to have a better life.... Hypocrites... And than once they are here, they start voting for their own little entries back home and have a big mouth over here how well their countries do at Eurovision... Very funny... funny haha,...

I still surprised no one from the escToday team publish the results of the - now infamous - OGAE club vote.

I have said for months and months "lets see if Sweden even qualify".

Yet again, Eurovision fans got it wrong - and big!
Both Top-2 - Sweden & Switzerland - did NOT qualify to the final; Oh, yes, sorry!! Sweden saved by the "Jury Fans", right. Thank god EBU made that rule JUST IN TIME to get Sweden in.

And as for which was the strongest final - does anyone here have any more doubts it was Semi 1, and NOT Semi 2 like many fans here suggests?

Well the truth is 'in the pudding' as they say -

Top-10: Out of the Top-5 in the final:

4 came from Semi 1 - Russia, Greece, Armenia, Norway
1 came from Semi 2 - Ukraine

Top-10: Out of the Bottom-5 in the final:

1 came from the Final - Serbia
3 came from Semi 1 - Azerbaijan, Israel, Bosnia-Herzegovina
1 came from Semi 2 - Turkey

Now, which was the strongest Semi Final??..

I hope ESC Fans will learn better for next year..
