To compete at the Candelaria Festival

Spain: Anabel Conde is back!

Anabel Conde who is well remembered for her Eurovision participation back in 1995 is back to musical scene and is all set to conquer the hearts of the Spanish public at the forthcoming 2008 Candelaria Song Festival. She achieved a honourable 2nd place with the song Vuelve conmigo at the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin.

Anabel hails from the beautiful town of Fuengirola, in the southern Andalusian province of Malaga. She will be competing at the forthcoming Candelaria Song Festival scheduled to be held in the Canary Islands, with the song Troya and Fire. Anabel's song has been composed by none other than Rafael Artesero, the man behind the Andorran Eurovision entries in 2005 and 2006. Rafael Artesero was also behind the runner up song La reina de la noche, at last year's Spanish Eurovision national final Mision Eurovision. Rafael won the composer's award at last year's Candelaria Song Festival.

Anabel has not enjoyed much success in her musical career after her successful performance at the 1995  Eurovision Song Contest. She tried to come back to the Eurovision Song Contest again in 2000, where she competed in the Spanish Eurovision heats Eurocancion 2000,only achieving a 4th place. Since then she's  been a part of the Alcatraz Orchestra. Vuelve conmigo  and Anabel Conde still hold the best results for the Spanish nation at the Eurovision Song Contest in the span of the last 28 years.

esctoday.com  would like to thank Jose Juan Santana and OGAE Spain for the contribution of this article.

Mina, Coral's song was o.k...but out of previous bad experience, i do not think this singer would charm the voters with her appearance..the song is very good, but i think she looks too "spanish" and not sweet at all while performing.and these faces end with 0 points in the ESC(see Remedios Amaya)

Then, I don't agree with Vincent :P
I liked Coral's song!

@ Mina
Yes, in last year's Spanish preselection Coral was the first runner-up, in third place came La Casa Azul...

since in the last days i feel a nostalgy for some previous very good entries from Spain, i have heard fot the first time the runner up of the spanish NF..i think this would have ended lowe on the screbard than chiki-chiki..but it is an ok song

Poor Anabel... They should create a charity fund for failed artists that scored well in the ESC.

my dear friends!!! this lady, Anabel Conde, must be a great singer!! I have just watched again the andorrean entry, ESC 2005-"La mirada interior", she is doing some great back vocals by singing behind the main singer(who vocally is nothing really good) and she is just great..especially after half of the song, she takes the whole singing on her(it is the blonde one with the curly hair)..i just wonder why such a good, true singer has never made a big career..watch for yuself, and please pay attention to her in the back..

in this song i love also the part when she screams..a very convincing performance indeed...bad luc that she sung the same year with nocturne, because this tune was very original fr the ESc and ambiental and it attracted most f the attention..i wish spain wins again sometime, but first i would like to see portugal winning..i like the entries of both these countries, among other reasons, because they carry the "stamp", music and language of their country and

i am telling you guys..in this contest spain has been very much undeestimated, even before the televoting era..and they have tried hard..and for me they send always something with a traditional touch and in their country language, but they fail to score well. i do not know why

why did Spain so badly very often ?? First of all Spain is NOT Latin America. Most Spanish entries have a spanish flavour, many ballads and only a few Latin flavoured tracks. For me onyl the entry from 2004 is a real Latin track. Beth and Rosa are more Disco with a latin touch or flavour. Brujeria was spanish again.

It's hard for Spain, being critizised very often for sending the same style again, though it's not really true imo. It's not a style that Eurovision fans are very fond of. Look at all the internal ratings. Real Latin flavour is not liked very much. But swedish schlager or balkan ballads are always up for the ESC fans, every year again and again.

The best Spanish entry ever and my personal #2 of all times!!!

@ Vincent
Yes, surely it's also known for its quality....................... ..
(Me too, I wrote something like "Bandido was great" ;)

@Max Raspail:

i know many people who know this song, and who never watched this or any other ESC, really! I think it was a very god entry, and that is why it is still remembered, nt becuse of the technical problem..have you noticed how much pissed off they look and they leave the stage by the first failed intro?

Vincent:
I liked "Bandido". The French "White and Black Blues" and the Irish "Somewhere in Europe" were good too.

Bandido was great... but I think Azucar Moreno succeeded to gain cult status mostly because they had to deal with the technical problems...
It's often the breakdown which we remember...

Mina Carnation [51405]

Vincent,
I love Bandido (maybe best Spanish entry for me) and I can't say I was crazy about Toto Cutugno and Insieme who won that year. I also liked the Irish song, Somewhere in Europe...but then again I liked almost all Irish songs.

Vincent Barbarino [38148]

Mina, Johny, Stockhol, Calling, Pau and the god rest :-),
ESC 1990, spanish entry: Azucar Moreno, "Bandido", for me back then and still now one of the best entries in the ESC. It came 5th, i think it seserved 1st place. It was also the opening act, and the organisators messed all up with the playback part. here is the link of it: http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=I2SOPPubnBc
now that is for me a very good entry for ESC: ethnic with mdern beat and nice, passionate but simple lyrics..it is a shame that Spain did not win with such god entries and it won with the boring laa, laa, laaaa, and this aunt with high hair singing vivo cantando, vivo llorando..i realise that Spain is indeed one og my favourite ESC countries and i would like to see it winning again..but not with chiki chiki, with something bombastic..What do you think of "Bandido"?

Pau,
i agree with you..i think Spain could get a high place, even win this contest, but it must try hard to present something very impressive..we had this discussion with Mina here..Spain has sent many times god entries, but somehow it can nt get a very good score..that was so even before the televoting era..i d not now why

I also think Norway was better than Spain that year, but I still think Spain is the country from the big4 that can already achieve a good result yet.

anabel was very good, but nocturne was by far much better.one of my favourite winning songs ever

I think the song is quite good although for me Nocturne was the knock out of 1995!

I just want to sellotape her arms to her sides though when watching that performance. It's a bit cringey when she sticks her finger in her ear and gives a good holler!

Stockholm calling [44413]

Max Raspail:
"Fra Mols til Skagen" was my second favourite in 1995 and imo the best entry ever from Denmark.

Max Raspail [36649]
Sat 5 Jul 2008 16:48:30

@ Patrick
Yes and she also was in the backing chorus of Marian van de Wal.
I think in one of the last two years she tried to take part in the Polish preselection and was one of the candidates for a wildcard, but never managed to get into the final...

Anabel was great, I loved her performance... She gets my second place... But my favourite in 1995 was by miles the Danish entry, Fra Mols Til Skagen by Aud Wilken...

Spain has the sort of music that appeals to many people...Latin music is loved allover the world. I'm surprised that they have only won the contest twice.

@Mina:

i fully agree with you, but it seems that Spain has never scored very well, not in the jury-voting times nor in the televoting..but why? And Spain as a country is also popular..i do not have any explanation 4 this
