French HoD ready for 2009
Bruno Berberes: Too much Eurovision will kill Eurovision
What was the general feeling of the French team on its way back to France ?
We were proud and satisfied to have reached one of our goals: we didn't "cheat", I mean we remained ourselves. Of course, we were also a bit disappointed as we expected at least a place in the final Top 10. But we couldn't be ignored and having an artist like Sébastien at Eurovision gives a good image to the contest, at least in France. In spite of a big number of entries, it seems that the choice gets smaller. All entries look like one another. It's getting boring.
What was the most positive point for the French artist ?
Sébastien told me that he's recognized by his baker! More seriously, the experience makes it possible for him to be considered as a more popular artist, with a name known by a much bigger circle than before.
Anything negative ?
Sébastien is a positive guy. His main regret is that quite a lot of performances are prefabricated. There's no emotion, nothing surprising. From the very first rehearsal to the Big Night, the same lock of hair moves the same way thanks to the same ventilator!
Sébastien is not used to performing in front of such a large audience. How did he prepare himself?
He worked with his producers. Originally there was a choreography and no background singers. We should have performed with dancers in a very glamorous and kitsch choreography. Rules didn't make it possible. Voices on the playback orchestra were made using a synthesizer, it is only "noise", but that point was refused by the EBU and we have been asked to have real singers. I think this must be changed, especially with that kind of music.
So we had to recruit backing singers only a few days before leaving France. They met Sébastien the day before we travelled to Belgrade, as Sébastien also had his own tour. Their rehearsed only once in France and the biggest part of the job was made in their hotel room the day of their first official rehearsal. It was fun!
What did Sébastien think about Eurovision before and after the contest ?
He had the same feeling with most of French people: kitsch, has-been, rubbish. But he said "yes" because he thought it was not his place. He likes surprises and jokes. After the contest, he told me he was delighted with that big circus, the Olympic Games of songs.
How did the idea of Sebastien's arrival on stage come about?
It was Sébastien's. It should have been a convertible but it was too heavy for the stage.
And what about the bearded backing vocalists ?
The idea comes from the video.
Why did Sébastien get out of the screen so often ? Don't tell me that it's because of the production team!
Well it was ! Sébastien's producers wanted another way of filming the song, they wanted an "arty" performance, no usual shots. Regarding the shot on his shoes... it should have lasted one second only, I must confess! That's the only thing wrong. What we wanted was a bit ambitious and pretentious. Rehearsals were not good at all, but many people told us it was original and I think viewers like unexpected things.
There was no commercial release of the single. Why?
Too expensive. CD single is nearly dead. But downloadings are taken into account on charts and that's how the French song enjoyed a very good placing in the Swedish lists.
How do you explain such good sales in Sweden ?
Northern countries gave us a lot of points. They definitely have good taste!
The TV viewing figures were bad. How did France 3's people analyse the poor result?
We had a lot of press coverage, both in France and outside France. Something we've never seen before. The trailer on France 3 was funny, people liked it... but there was football on France 2.
Do you think that having the contest back on France 2 could be possible?
Right now, everything is possible with France Télévisions.
How do you feel the choice will be made for 2009 ?
Nothing has been discussed but the song will be performed in French, that's a fact. Don't expect any idea before September. I personally have some proposals that I will defend.
Anything on your proposal ?
Why not world music ? French musicians know how to do it. There are also 2 or 3 unexpected artists who already told me they'd like to do it.
Did you appreciate the week in Belgrade ?
For me, it was the best venue since Istanbul. A very well organized and efficient team to care for us. A great pleasure for a Head of Delegation !
Is Sébastien Tellier an "easy" guy to work with ?
He was one of the most serious and professional entrants I have worked with since 2002. Same as with Les Fatals Picards.
Did you watch the semi-finals ?
Of course we did. Especially the first one. We watched it together with the Swedish team. A lot of journalists were there and pictures were made with Charlotte Perrelli and Sébastien close to each other... Beauty and the Beast!
What do you think about the new system ? Two semi finals instead of one.
Too much Eurovision will kill Eurovision ! Even if these semi-finals were more "fair play" than before, the problem remains the same on Saturday night. I still don't understand England's bad placing and last year's German flop.
In your opinion, which country should have qualified and didn't ?
The Netherlands, Switzerland and Cyprus. It was very disappointing as these songs were not fake.
And those you saw as potential winners on Saturday?
Russia, maybe Bosnia, Israel or Portugal... and France of course (laughs).
On Saturday, on which place did you think France would be?
I honestly think a Top 5 was possible or at least a place into the Top 10. Once again, I undervalued the impact of diaspora and friendly voting. More than ever, people voted with their passport and not with the ears! It will kill the contest. It is like ice-skating a few years ago. One day, a true solution will have to be found. With a bit of economical courage.
So how do you consider the final result ?
Our 47 points are "true points". They should be multiplied by 5! (joke). We are proud to be that high, thanks to Northern Europe. And no one can suspect a "so-called French community" in Estonia, Lithuania or Iceland! Even the UK gave us 2 points. This is great!
I think the contest has to take the artistic point of view more seriously. Many solutions can be submitted. Why not a jury made of "Rest of the world" people, like in Cannes' film festival ? People working in the show business, with no direct interest in the final result.
Ready for Moscow ?
Of course. I love Eurovision as an experience. For me, it is 43 countries meeting each other, 43 different cultures.
The winner's Tour did a stop in France, where Eurovision is not big anymore. What made this possible ?
That was a request of the EBU and all media I've been in touch with said "Yes" at once. That was easier than I hoped it would !
And how did Dima feel in Paris ?
He is a very pleasant guy, not pretentious at all. This trip was in way a good thing after the victory's storm. Being the Eurovision winner in a country where this means nearly nothing spells you have to work hard to reach a new fame.

Candyman,
this time, i really can not wait until ESC 2009...in the past years it was no problem waiting for the next ESC..this time it is..
i am now well rested, and ready for the new day :-) i wish Eurovision 2009 were today or tomorrow..this year i can not wait
oh no i dont want Eurovision09 so soon
p I prefer watching again the ESC08 DVD
Candyman..and about the modern dance thing..well i am preparing to be ready for every occasion in the ESC 2009, maybe Sakis will need an extra dancer in the very last moment..oor some other performers..:-)..just kidding, OF COURSE :-)
LOL, send an e-mail to ERT, they might be interested

The Azeri guys are absolutely awful, the interview I had read by them was so mean it had left me speechless.
yeah esp. what they said about Sirusho and Armenia. grrrr they mixed politics and music. they aren't true artists..lol
three exhausting hours of modern dance classes, and that in the evening.. think i am going to sleep..
modern dance classes? wow it sounds great!
Goodnight!
high pressure..i meant..guys i think i am tired, because my english is getting worse minute by minute..maybe it is normal after three exhausting hours of modern dance classes, and that in the evening.. think i am going to sleep..
You can't disagree with me that in 11 yrs only 4 ballads have won..that's a fact..lol
that's not the point i disagree with you LOOOL
the same thing happened to me with "believe" this year..i had not like this song at all before and during the contest, and in htese days it started growing on me..maybe we exchange through wireless waves tastes :-)
LOL, yes, maybe
after the contest i took notice though of some strange things and compaints of these two guys..i did not like this attitude of them after the contest..i mean to pass the finals and finish 8th is the dream of many countries who have been competing for ages in the conteat..they should be happh about it
you're right. i read it on oikotimes too. i imagine they expected to win or what? omg they're freaks. i guess millions of ppl didn't even know where azerbaijan was located and still they managed to reach 8th place in their 1st participation.. so arrogant! booh
they also made some nasty comments about armenia...it's all about politics for them..i hope we will never ever see them on screen!
The Azeri guys are absolutely awful, the interview I had read by them was so mean it had left me speechless.
Actually, Charlotte didn't have any dance routine in her perfomance..
But i'm talking about you honey but other euro-fans..
And i disagree with you. Ballads have the same possibilities to win. It seems that people are bored of ethnic songs & dance routines with surprises in the middle of the song..
That's why Serbia won over Ukraine last year. And Norway made it to the top 5 this year which was a surprise and got 7pts from many eastern countries..
It just depends on how good the song is..(whether it is a ballad or a dance song). Israel 2005 had an amazing stage presence and Shiri's vocals were very good. And it reached the 4th place!
You can't disagree with me that in 11 yrs only 4 ballads have won..that's a fact..lol
Mina,

Candyman,
i agree with you, livia was so nervous on the semi-fianl that she could hardly sing..i had followed her way and path up to the semi and i know she was very very pressed, because she was longing to do well and she knew all maltese people and some other europeans had put high hpes on her.Olivia Lewis can sing very well, but on this very night she didn't. I think this song was kind of original and different: not a slow ballad, not an uptempo, dramatic but not slow..maybe it did not fit to any mass taste.i do not know..i was so sad it didn't make it to the final..
@Stockholm:
yes, i did watch them together with the first cup of coffee, as i had promised..and........i did not like them at all :-( i prefered the 1998 entry, it would get my 1pt..the 1995 wouldn't get anything from me.But as i said, although i am not a big fan of Sweden in Eurovision, i stumbled today onto the second swedish entry i liked, after "Spirits are calling my name".it is the song "Just nu", ESC 1981..a nice simple rock pop entry.it should have done better
Candyman,
i think i lie your taste :-) i am hapy that yu liked "Vertigo" too, i also know other people, not big fans of the contest who have found the song very good, i voted for it many times, my friends and my company on the night also, but it did not get a single point from Germany..a very nice song, touching melody, well orchestrated, simple but nice love-passin words..this entry had everything..even a violin and a violinist..and a kong..such a pitty it did not get through to the viewers..
and i forgot to tell you..the azeri song was one of my favourites this year, original, rockish with good vocals and an interesting show..after the contest i took notice though of some strange things and compaints of these two guys..i did not like this attitude of them after the contest..i mean to pass the finals and finish 8th is the dream of many countries who have been competing for ages in the conteat..they should be happh about it
Vincent:
Our musical tastes don't seem to coincide
Btw did you watch the Swedish 1995 and 1998 entries?
Candyman 12 points:
Azerbaijan was my favourite song and I still love it
Candyman,
noone said that Charlotte or Ani or Sirusho or Kalomoira are voiceless, so I don't know where you base that comment that every1 is ready to accuse the artists who sing dance songs as "voiceless
Personally I admit I'm partial to ballads and at the same time I think that a dancing song has more chances to win Eurovision because even a singer with an average (not bad) voice with some good back vocals and a great dance routine/catchy tune can score quite well.
With ballads it's more difficult, look at these 11 televoting years, only 4 ballads have won.
Stockholm calling:
Really? At least, Sweden didn't award any pts to Azerbaijan
I don't really see your point in the 1st paragraph...it's like you mean that dancing songs are more 'worthy' somehow?
Do you really believe that anyone noticed Kalomoira's voice for example? (i feel bad using other countries for example so i'll stick to my own)
I mentioned top 6 because Serbia was 6th
i mean that every1 is ready to accuse the artists who sing dance songs as "voiceless", while the exact opposite happens tot hose who prefer to sing ballads like Dima Bilan, whose voice isn't special but boring i'd say.
About Kalomira, yeah i think that they called her voiceless even if they didnt realize she had to dance at the same time..well done to her for doing it well..if i was her, i would have done bad but hey i'm not her
So you should say top 8 because Azerbaijan came 8th LOL (overrated by the way)
Bilan's song didn't need special vocal abilities... and when an entry has dancing routine etc people are often criticizing the artist and call him/her voiceless just because he/she chose to perform a dance song and not a ballad.. for god's sake.
LOL why do u mention only top 6 entries and not top 5 or top 10?

yeah, i just think she didn't sing that well but it shouldn't be the reason not to qualify.. i was shocked when i saw she came only 25th among 27 countries! really bad place! as i wrote before, the 2007 semifinal was the toughest one and EBU shouldn't have let this happen because it was chaos and people got tired of so many entries..i even got tired.. and 40+countries voted..
I've come to like Vertigo, too...I don't know why I didn't like it last year..strange!
it was one of the easiest songs to sing considering the fact that he didn't have to dance along with singing.
LOL U forgot the Azeri entry..the guy in the beginning of the entry was screaming i guess not many ppl can do this horrible thing LOL
Just because he didn't have to dance, it doesn't mean it was easy...actually it makes things more difficult if you think about it, because when there's dancing involved people have more things to focus on.
About Azerbaijan, I didn't mention it because I said among the Top 6 songs

@Mina,
i wuldn't actually dare to imagine what it would happen if we ever sat in a jury..Baby doll would probably win :-)) this entry has something special indeed..
