Terry Wogan, UK, United Kingdom

Stepping down after 37 years!

UK: Wogan to quit Eurovision role?

In an interview published in tomorrow's Radio Times, Sir Terry Wogan has given his strongest indication that he will be stepping down as the BBC's Eurovision Song Contest host after 37 years. The 70-year-old radio and TV presenter has tired of the "political voting" which he feels has determined the outcome of the contest in recent years
"I was considering giving up before Belgrade, and now I have to say I'm very doubtful about ever wanting to do Eurovision again. I've had so much fun, but I think it's time for someone else to take over," he said.

"Days before the show, I knew Russia would win. The fact is, Putin was getting nasty, which means the former satellite states were always going to vote for Russia in order to keep the oil coming."
"It's unfortunate, I suppose, but whereas we have always taken Eurovision with a pinch of salt, the former Eastern Bloc countries are not sufficiently versed in the ways of democracy to realise they are supposed to be voting for a song, not a next-door neighbour."

"The only way the UK will ever regain any respectability is if we get a major British star – Robbie Williams, Take That, God knows there are enough of them – to represent us, and then people will vote for us."

no man, we were talking for like 10 15 mins...and then he went all silent. I met a lot of swedes, and even tough they can be cold sometime they are really cool as people...there are always ass holes ni matter where you go.
And i could have always called him a terrorist, as he had dark skin...

@ nemeke did you say hello to him? sometimes cab drivers wait for the passenger to start a conversation, remember they pick lots of people up and they dont know whether the passenger is a chatty person or not, sometimes people just want to sit back and relax, so they tend to wiat until the passenger initiates the conversation, im sure if you started the coversation he would have carried on chatting

Moscow 2009?
In view of recent events - will some countries boycott?

BBC may find pressure on them - and what with Terry going, a decision to pull out would make sense. Without Terry (love him or loathe him) - UK viewing figures will drop.

The upcoming EDC may be interesting - if it follows the same voting patterns that have ruined ESC over the last 5 years or so.... and if the UK viewing figures are poor (which I think they will be) - the BBC may have to think long and hard about Moscow 2009.

I travelled a lot all over the world and if I'm honest my top 3 of friendly people are :
1) Irish ( always friendly, always polite, always good fun)
2) Greeks (my second home, especially the islands)
3) English (my home)

Worst ever experience, did not like the Luxembourgers and absolutely can not stand the Russian mentality....

I'm sorry that the taxi driver in Stockholm made you feel awkward. I don't often go by taxi but when I do the drivers are usually very quiet.

Mina you are correct there. It happens over here aswell. But the East is so much bigger, so the consequences of the televoting is getting out of hand. There again it all comes back to televoting and certain decisions EBU has to teke. It's noy the fault of certain regions, countries... If UBE changes to 1 vote/phonenumber, 50/50 televote jury, and only country in final to vote...it will be a lot better and more honest.

A lot to do with the media and how you guys are portrait. But that doesn't mean you can generalise.... We came to Serbia, we hd a good time, your organisations was splendid, I loved it....

well ive ben east and west, and altho there is a total lack of customer service in the west, i actually find the people to be friendlier! they usually talk to u straight away and will help ya out..
but in the west i find u gotta crack ppl more... mind u this is coming from a sydney boy who's 2 fave cities are berlin and london!!
for instance in athens i met pplp on the street in athens trying to get directions and ended up gettin takin clubbin all nyt wit them...
in macedonia we got a free guided tour by the local archeologist at a ancient ruined city and then invited to dinner at his house..
in slovenia ive never met so many instantaneously friendly open minded people...
in berlin i got escorted by a turkish shopkeeper in kreuzberg to the markets and he left his shop unattended to help me..
i actually found u have to crack people more in the west... and again keep in mind m,y best euro mates are from the west ;)
so i think the misconceptions about the east are just simpl generalisations... cant say about the ex ussr tho coz never been ther

@Nemke

you see that Driver was proberly too Quiet as a person
but you could of done that route again the next day and got a differant Cab Driver and he/she could of been real Chatty to you.

we all deal with Strangers differantly.

the Cab Driver who you had ,that could of been his Personality.

In my opnion TW is correct in his saying. But like I said, if I would be Serb, Greek, Turc, Armenian, Bosnian, Ukrainian, Russian.... etc I would probably see it differently

marc,
do you mean you don't know that Andorra, Spain and Portugal vote for each other, that the Scandinavians vote for each other, that Ireland votes for the Uk, or that Belgium (your own country) votes for Netherlands? How can you say you think he's right? Do you have to be Greek, Turk, Armenian or Chinese to see that western countries also vote for neighbours???

well i was in Slussen and i was going to the new exhibition centre and we were talkign from the hotel to the bridge that lifts, where u can see the globe arena to the left. So thats quite a ride...
And from there to the centre he didnt say a single word

nemke s [24388]
Thu 14 Aug 2008 14:34:10

well i do know that..its just that whenever we make a good move we get sent back like 10 back!
And like when there was eurovision so many people were bashing us, and what happened, nothing people came and had fun adn then went back home!
So another label that we had to overcome!

@Nemke,

the Story you made about the cab Driver in Sweden.

well he could of been just a quick hello, how are you ,where are you from ?kind of Talking guy,as people are generally like that.

maybe people in the East are generally more chatty to Tourists,I cant say as I never been to Eastern Europe.

I even go into Cabs and they sometimes say a quicj hello and that is it,and sometimes the Cab driver and I dont say anything at all.
