esctoday.com coverage of EDC and JESC

There has been much debate amongst the esctoday.com team regarding whether or not we should continue to cover the Junior Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision Dance Contest. The website was created by fans of the Eurovision Song Contest to cover the show. The two new brands, whilst successful television shows, have different target audiences and interests, and it has been clear that our readers are less interested in them than the Eurovision Song Contest itself. For that reason, we are asking our members whether esctoday.com should end coverage of the two shows.

esctoday.com is funded predominantly by the team behind it, the reason for not attending the competition in Glasgow is simple. We do not have the funds to cover the event. Our editors have full time jobs or are students and covering the Eurovision Song Contest in many cases requires them to use up half of their annual holiday entitlement from work. They have to pay their own travel and accomodation costs, and go far above the call of duty to keep the site online and providing fair and neutral coverage.

esctoday.com remains a neutral site. We do not accept donations or payments from any broadcaster, record company, artist or competing party at the Eurovision Song Contest or its sister shows and we maintain this policy even when it means we have to reduce coverage.

This makes it difficult to find a site sponsor or partner companies, and we remain without a sponsor that can provide funds for a site redesign or to add features that we would like to install. It also means that we rely on team and reader donations to fund the webhosting that keeps the website online. For more information about how you can help or donate to esctoday.com click here.

For this reason, some soul searching and tough decisions are required. In order to cover the additional shows, we face the painful probability that coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest would be diluted. As the EBU has overhauled its online marketing of the events, eurovisiondance.tv is providing excellent coverage of the dance contest, and esctoday.com feel that by refering our readers that have an interest in the show, we serve both Eurovision Song Contest and Dance Contest fans better.

The Eurovision Dance Contest is a show that we find enjoyable, but our editors are not experienced in coverage of dance, and do not have the same knowledge or training to provide authoritative coverage.

We are also aware of the importance of our readers and members views, and for that reason, we have taken a team decision to open up this debate to our readers. We would like you to vote in the polls below, asking whether we should end our coverage of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision Dance Contest, or whether you would like us to continue to cover them.

Have your say by voting in the following two polls, and in the reactions section below.

Florian: You don't like JESC, but you and others here must respect those who like the junior eurovision show. I don't like too... but if esctoday is a independent site (I have so many doughts about it...) the site must do reports about the 3 eurovision events.

Correction to my previous post:

Coverage of EDC: Definitely yes! Please keep an eye and that colourful and lovely show!

Coverage of JESC: Definitely no! Nobody needs that crap!

2 questions:

- esctoday says that they are an independent site, so they don't want to receive sponsors from tv-stations. How many cultural events are sponsered by the media, including the broadcasters?

- esctoday says that EDC and JESC have already excelent coverages from the official websites. BUT, that official websites are not independent, because their owners are the organizers EBU/UER. Is this clear?

IMO, esctoday, as an independent website, should do a independent coverage of this 2 eurovision events. Probably the problem is that the editors of this site don't like the events and they don't have the capacity to catch the attention of sponsors. They prefer to put in the homepage the sad message "Support us".

In my opinion coverage of the JESC and EDC can stop. Fans of these competitions can start their own page and create their own funds for coverage. This is an ESC-website, and the main focus should be there. It's already hard (and expensive) enough to cover that event properly.

I think coverage should continue, gives those who are interested in them something to talk about during the very quiet non-ESC months.

and yet again you prove that you really are a prat along with your imaginery friend, and for your information we have hosted 10 eurovision events 8 song contests (more than any other nation)and 2 dance contest , so i will now leave you to play with yourself in more ways than one

i am proud of my country!! and maybe you should learn humility yourself after your embarrasing antics before eurovison and your charlotte pirelli antics, the fact that the u.k is hosting it has nothing to do with it, we were chosen as the hosts for the first 2 years we didnt ask for it, and we have and will put on a great show at the cost of the british licence fee payer, so when you can grow up and apologise for your childish behaviour in the past then you can ask me if i am proud of my country, after all the thing that you were so proud of did badly and you went into hiding for 3 months till the shame died down

I enjoy the EDC and while I do not request nor expect extensive coverage of the EDC I would not exactly like this site to ignore it completely, because I think that after 4 or 5 years it could turn into a really good show if more countries start participating (hopefully more in western Europe!) However the JESC does not interest me one bit, so I say end coverage of JESC but give EDC a few more years.

personally i think that they should stop doing junior and dance contests alltogether. they are simply a money making gimmick by the ebu, noone really cares who wins, and the dance contest is nothing different to any saturday nights viewing all over europe, strictly come dancing has been adopted worldwide so the dance contest is just jumping on a lucrative bandwagon, keep eurovision about the music!!

EDC is a good show, JESC is not. So, EDC coverage should be kept.

I don't like the JESC and EDC. They are both boring. It doesn't help that my home country isn't participating in both contests this year and that they aren't shown in TV where I live. So my interesting is nearly non existing.

But nevertheless I at least like to read a report about the night of the JESC and EDC here. How it was and who has won. People should be given a chance to write a comment about those contests nights if they like. That wouldn't be possible without an article about those contests.

But the coverage of the JESC and EDC nights is really enough and esctoday authors could just write about them after seeing them in TV. There is really no need to attend the contests personally. Just save your money.

The coverage of the national finals of the JESC and the coverage about who was chosen for the EDC weeks before the contest, should be scrapped.

I am interested in neither the Dance Contest nor the Junior Contest, so from my perspective this site would benefit from dropping these two focus areas. Provided, of course, that you continue to report about instances which may have implications for the Song Contest (i.e. Spain withdrawing from Dance Contest etc), which I'm sure you will. Keep up the good work, guys! Don't waste time and energy on unimportant spinoffs.

I agree with the sentiments expressed by most here. JESC and EDC are of marginal interest to me, and as such I would encourage esctoday to focus its resources on ESC. However, providing secondary reporting of major developments in the other contents is always appreciated, if only to provide a placeholder to give those who want to discuss via feedback a forum to do this.

On a personal note, it is disappointing to see criticism of the efforts of the team who maintain and update this site in some of the reactions below. I believe that the coverage of the contest by the esctoday team is amazingly professional.

I say don't cover it extensively. Maybe put results online and national final choices, and tell people where they can go to watch it, but don't spend any money on sending people there or anything.

For me jESC is like a eurovision patch to help the cravings until national finals start in december/january ;)

And btw, what I noticed in Austria about EDC:
In contrast to last year, the competition will be broadcast on our second channel instead of the first (in the first will be football). The second channel is considered to be more for the older generation. Well, the dancer for Austria (he is a tv host) is also considered to be more for the older generation so...

First of all, I really love this site and appreciate the work of the esctoday.com- team! I think it is the best Eurovision- site we have!
Therefore, it would be the best to stick to Eurovision Song Contest, the only true Eurovision!!!
About JESC, it is definitely the best to cut it out of this site completely. This "contest" is one big joke and hopefully, it will vanish completely in the years to come. Little children pretending to be grown- up stars.... it is just ridiculous and annyoing!
About EDC, I like last year's edition, I don't know what will be this year. The circumstancs are not so good, I think (Spain withdrawing, unclear voting system...).
I wouldn't mind some news about EDC but I certainly wouldn't miss it if there is no coverage!

ESC IS THE ONLY REAL THING!

I think both ESC & JESC should be covered here, buy beacuse they are only "gap fillers" during the ESC seasons brake, the coverge should be minimal and focused only on the 2 weeks that surround the show (the week before and the week after).

EDC? it's even more boring than jESC. who cares about this contest?

Honestly I don't care... But I see why some reactions are negative for EDC and the Junior-contest. But if I should make up my mind, I would prefer a cover of the Junior only - not the EDC.

JESC-YES
EDC-NO

I think Jesc is not as good as the real Eurovision Song Contest!I think it will have more viewers if the host of the contest is the winner of it!

About EDC.Its just weast of money adn time!Better make a diffrent project!
I have sth in mind witch will be more spectacular and will bring more viewers to EDC.

I will send to EBU a later with my idea :P

Carolus if you have so many good news to share about ESC and if you are so unhappy with esctoday.com why don't you simply publish all the good stories that you know?

I love esctoday.com! And in my opinion there is no other ESC related webpage I know that is as good and interesting as esctoday is. It's amazing how much information, news, polls and many more things the girls and guys from this site give us fans in their freetime.

Correction!

Give EDC a chance! Its only the 2nd EDC!!

esctoday.com should rename to eurovisiontoday.com.

I say keep covering JESC and EDC!

To the people hate JESC, the best thing is not to watch it!!!
