Two of the countries most for the change

Austria & Monaco back in 2009?

Although every participating country will be affected by today's announcement that the juries will be back in force in the 2009 final, there are perhaps two non-participating countries who will be watching today's events with interest, after both withdrew from the Eurovision Song Contest in the past couple of years in protest of the voting.

Austria, who last entered in 2007 (after skipping 2006), and Monaco, who last entered in 2006, both withdrew in protest of the voting, with Austrians claiming that the voting reflected geography more than talent, and the Monégasque broadcaster TMC stating that Monaco had a very small chance to qualify to the final in comparison with a lot of other countries.

The EBU will be hoping that today's announcement about the voting changes for 2009 will go some way towards appeasing the Austrian and Monégasque broadcasters ORF and TMC, perhaps paving the way for the two countries to return in Moscow. Austrian broadcaster ORF said earlier this year that the new multiple semi final system got rid of a lot of the problems of the single semi system, but that the final voting was still flawed - the new system will leave the semis as they were in 2008, but change the final. Monaco's complaints were aimed more at the semi as well, stating that their entrants stood little chance of progressing to the final. TMC have as yet not gone on record to say what they think of the 2 semis system.

esctoday.com has been in contact with both ORF and TMC and will bring you the two countries' reactions on the news over the coming few days.

Stockholm calling.

I never mentioned anything about the letter e. You foreign johnnies just don't get irony do you? You see - I tell him it's got an extra e and then point out it has two x i.

Never mind. I'm wasted on here.

Night Elf

Don't worry - I won't be saying anything on bad Serbian.

Possibly Austria could come back, but maybe in 2010. I don't think Monaco would change its mind, only if the DNP voting would clearly defeated it could return in the future.
Slovakia would participate if STV could get the necessary budget for it. Italy and Luxembourg will stay out.
About Liechtenstein, I think the new broadcaster won't enter EBU by the moment.
Morocco and Lebanon? Forget Arab countries while Israel is participating!

Monaco, Please come back! and Do not take any more into account what some fans said on this forum concerning your 'bad songs' you send to the 2004 and 2005 ESC. Your song was great but you are victim of ineptitudes, that's it!

I am secretly hoping Austria will stay out and that Poland withdraws. That will cause an east west split right down the centre - Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Italy. Or Russia could just invade Poland as promised. That will put the kibosh on Isis Gee's hopes.

You speak German? Doesn't look much like it, but speaking German is more than most Austrians would admit to and it's 'Die Zeit Ist Einsam'. By the wonderful Peter Cornelius. Who sings in Viennese. Sort of.

You have to be wise, look from the bright side, and be possitive when you contribute, some examples for Austrie: call for everybody from Estonia in 2001, The belly dancing of great fun from Turkey in 2003 or even monsters success for Finland in 2006. Perhaps Austria can learn to pray like Serbia in 2007, god help what can I say!..

No worries about Austria, it is so predictable, they are skipping a year and coming back year after, thay don't want to contribute every year with their weaknesses that lead them to achieve bottom position, when was the last time Austria won or reached top 3!......I guess they are no longer keen and willing to participate in this contest. They might as well leave permanently as Italy did, because skipping a year making a return a year after doesn't change anything for good. Oh well, still, good luck.

@Kokkorutmelle,

I know my friend, "Die seit ist einsam" was just too beautiful, classy, not commercial enough to pick up points. As I do speak German I understanfd the words and they are just magnificient

Both Austria and Monaco are in the Top10 of my favourite ESC-countries, Monaco's even at the second place at the moment...

So I'm more than just hoping that they'll return as soon as possible...

@ Marc
I do like "Die Zeit ist einsam" very much too. So classy ! It was so incredible that such a professional act could place lower than France that year ! That shows that juries votes can be very unfair too... I also like very much "Nur ein Lied" from 1989 for Austria.

Any Country coming back or making its debut is good for the ESC. Come on Austria and Monaco!

For me personally... not any country. I'd rather say "Welcome back!" than just "Welcome" to yet another newby.
Time to close the ranks... IF all old EBU-members (registered up untill this day) would all enter the ESC would count as many as 50 countries (and that's quite enough don't you think?)

I look forward to seeing Austria back. And to seeing Austria's votes no longer dominated by all its immigrants. Hurrah!
