Yugoslavia 63 & 65

Vice Vukov dies at the age of 72

Croatian singer Vice Vukov died overnight at the age of 72 having been in coma for almost three years after a fall. He represented Yugoslavia twice in the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1963 and 1965.

Vukov was a popular singer in his home country in the 1960s. In the early 1970s he joined a movement demanding more independence for Croatia within the Yugoslav federation. When this movement was downed, he had to leave the country and was banned from performing publicly until 1989.

Vice Vukov took part in the 1962 Yugoslav national final but did not reach the top two. The year after, he was chosen internally to represent the country with the song Brodovi in London, where he finished 11th with three points. In 1965 he took part in the national final with no less than four songs and could win the selection with Čenja. At the Eurovision Song Contest in Naples, he finished 12th with two points.

Indeed, Vice Vukov was one of the most popular vocalists in the 1960s in Yugoslavia. He did not only take part in Eurovision, but in many other local Yugoslavian song contests as well. He had a beautiful voice and his rendition of "Ceznja" is absolutely fantastic. May he never be forgotten!

Very sad. I remember meeting up with him in Zagreb in 1989, when (as far as I understood) he was still not allowed to sing publically. The meeting resulted in an interview in OGAE News (now EuroSong News). A real gentleman and a great singer.

And yes, there is a studio version of YU65.

@ Fabio Deluca

I'm pretty sure my copy of Ceznja is Studio, either that or there was no Audience or anything, However my internet is capped at the moment and would take an Hour to upload.

Do you use msn? I can send it to you in October :P

Goodbye Vice! All the ESC-fans will remember you forever.

By the way, I just realised that I only have a live version of "Ceznja". Does a studio version also exist? My email is in my profile, thank you!
