3440 songs entered for 2009

Recordbreaker for Melodifestivalen entries

SVT has just confirmed that a record breaking 3,440 songs have been submitted for Melodifestivalen 2009. That number is six more than last year, the previous record and means Sweden will almost certainly have the highest number of songs to choose from in Europe as they select their next Eurovision Song Contest entry.

SVT will now begin the process of selecting the 28 that will go forward to the competition's four semi finals next year. Once they have been selected, 4 more songs will take their place along side them as wild card entries.

The huge growth in interest from the Swedish music industry for Melodifestivalen shows no sign of slowing, despite Sweden's poor results by their own standards in the last two years. Since 1995, the number of entries submitted to the competition has increased by almost 600%, with a new record number of entries being reaced in all but two years this decade. You can see the number of entries submitted each year at the end of this article.

The Melodifestivalen calendar for 2009 is as follows:

I contacted Swedish Radio about Svensktoppen and I received an email from one of their producers. There is no rule stating that a song must have been on Topplistan for 3/4 weeks. The new songs selected each week are 5 of the most played songs on Radio 4.

That's a shame - I can't get it because it's only available on the Swedish iTunes, grr!!!! And yes Sanna is still number one :D :D :D she's coming close to beating Sonja Aldén's record last year!

And do you know if there is a rule which states that a song must have been on topplistan for 3/4 weeks before it goes onto Svensktoppen, because I was expecting to hear Lena & Orup chart today!

I didn't answer you about "Nu när du gått" but I don't have the mp3. I think it's great too. And Sanna is still number one :)

How much where composed by G :Son and his Lionheart bunch ? 1000 or 2000 ? Now that he can't enter the norwegian NF with his " amazing songs " again ;)

@ Björn - why wait till the reslut of 2009 ? The last result, especially this year, already proved that sonething's " seriously wrong " with the entries. They are predictable, boring and old fashioned : schlager, schlager light, rock schlager, dance schlager, ethno schlager, comedy schlager and a few boring and empty ballads and the same bunch of singers and composers....cause even if 1 Million songs were submitted, the same old ones would make it to the NF - you know, BWO, Sanna, Shirely, Linda, Sonja and all the others. There you'll have the problem. Of course, there are always a few " foreign " soundind songs at the MF, mainsly presented by no names - but they are never serious contenders for victory, that's just a Björkman trick to pretend some variety. He'll make sure the " right ones " win anyway.....right for his own taste in music of course. I pretty sure the international jury won't change much.

lol. And Carola translated "Invincible" into Swedish.
Yes, it was the same competition. Some other MF contestants who competed (though not the same year all of them) were:
Bosson (as Michael Jackson), Fame-Magnus Bäcklund (as Tom Jones), Caroline Wennergren (as Ella Fitzgerald), Barbados-Mathias Holmgren (as Nick Kamen), Shirley Clamp (as Maria McKee).
I read your comment on the Lena article :)

I bet you it was Christer's fault!!! :P He probably wanted to resurrect Carola's career and offered her a free song! That's the only way both Sanna and Sonja could have been overlooked so badly!

And that sound-alike competition you mentioned - was that the one were Sandra impersonated Carola?

Do you have the mp3 of "Nu När Du Gått"? I love it so much, I'm so happy it's number one - I left a comment on the article about Lena for you!

LOL. I didn't know that Sanna was meant to sing "Invincible" and didn't you say that Sonja Aldén sang the demo version? Why Carola then ...

Linda Bengtzing released two singles in the late 80s and as I mentioned before she impersonated Aqua-Lene in the sound-alike competition in 2000.

OMG, I've just read Sanna Nielsen's Swedish wikipedia-page and apparently, she was originally meant to sing "Invincible/Evighet" - why did Carola have to come along and ruin it all!!! :P

    Jonny
You probably know already, but Linda Bengtzing is 34!!! She does not look a day over 24 :P and she had some songs back in the eighties before disappearing and returning in 2005! And Jessica Andersson was originally meant to sing "Jag Ljuger Så Bra" - how can you imagine that!!!?

"Ooh I didn't know that it was the same people that wrote Runaway..." Jonny

Haha :D yes it's the fab 4 of Paulus, Laisaar, Kotkas & Hallas who also wrote "1 Year From Now" by Linda (Eurolaul 2007) and Birgit Õigemeel's song this year!

No, the people who wrote "Through my window" are Estonian. They also wrote "Runaway" and "Once in a lifetime".
In fact Christer admitted before the final that he would feel awkward if the Pirates won :)

My God! they have so many songs... for next ten years and to give a fiew to neighbours ... In Bosnia there is only one song presented to public . . a tragedy . . .
It seams for some years Sweden will have a Eurosong of its own . . Sweden San Remo....
    I love Sweden!
But, honestly, I hope one of that fiew thousand song is not Abba-like...

MF is the best national final. the staging is amazing and the enthusiasm the swedes have is great to see. now we see so many other countries copying the swedeish format too.

Oh yeah I remember you telling me about Wolves of the sea now! :D And you're so right about Shine, it is such an amazing song and should have walked the Romanian final easily :( Shame it didn't make it to Belgrade. Although imagine if it did make it to Belgrade, and then beat Hero, Christer Bjorkman would be kicking himself lol :P :)
I also wonder whether "through my window" from 2006 was applied to Melodifestivalen aswell, because basically most of the estonian team that year was Swedish :)

"You have to feel sorry for the people who have to listen to every one of these 3500 or so songs"
    LOL Jonny :D

The fact that "Shine" was rejected by the MF jury makes me mad. It's a beautiful song which should have competed in MF. I think you're right about "Superhero" and MF as two Swedes wrote the song. One of them also co-wrote "Viva la musica" for the Polish NF. And you forgot to mention "Wolves of the sea" :)

"When songs like "Kebabpizza slivovitza" and "Razborka" made it to the event. I really doubt if I would want to listen to all those who didn't make it.
lol that is a very good point, you should add "clubbin'" by addis black widow to that list aswell ;)

But still, every year there are some amazing songs that doesn't make it either. Songs that sometimes participate in other NFs."
Yeah that is true, and a shame really. 'Shine' by Biondo was applied to MF this year but didn't make it so it was entered into the Romanian selection instead, which is a shame cos it is a really good song and would have reached the final of MF easily - http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=JZmk2qSQC0s
And I have a feeling that Sandra Oxenryd's song 'superhero' was applied aswell and got rejected, because it seems rather strange that she would go to the Polish selection rather than the Swedish one. Here was her song - http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=i9Dv4kUNRo8 :)

@ Larry Dart: You're spot on - because Lord Lloyd Webber will be writing the entries for the UK final and as prolific as he is, I don't think his back catalogue even stretches to 3,440 songs.
