Italy : Franco Battiato soon in Paris and London

Next October 24, Franco Battiato will give an unique concert in Paris, more precisely in La Cigale, one of the most famous Parisian halls. Four days after, the 1984 Eurovision Italian entrant will be on stage in London, at the Koko.

«After two decades away from Paris, Battiato is back » an article writes on the Fnac's website, where tickets can be purchased.  The show is announced as a selection of the singer's best songs together with some pieces performed with jazz singer Anne Ducros. All in all, there will be 12 musicians behind the artist, including a rock group and a classical quartet.

Now aged 63, Franco Battiato is still very active but far from the usual show business, like he always did. A big number of experiences and works are to be found in his biography (have a look at wikipedia) and something like 10 books have already been published on him in Italy. Back in 1984, Franco Battiato sang for Italy in Luxembourg, together with another talented and uncommon performer, Alice. I treni di Tozeur ended up 5th but became one of the most beloved Eurovision non-winning songs. In every poll made here and there the entry always places high. Spanish and English versions of I treni di Tozeur were recorded, and both singers also have their own solo version on different CDs.

 Thanks to Patrice.

Jan , don't get me wrong my friend, I absolutely adored Maribelle. Best ever Dutch entry..... But he friends, in general 1984, was an excellent festival. The organisation (mainly in Dutch hands), the stage (100 % in Dutch hands), the presenter (I absolutely adored Desiree's way of presenting, very spontaneous), the songs.... So many good songs that year. Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, France, even Luxembourg I liked... Oh waar is de tijd ????? Or for my bristish friends... Nostalgic

Their performance was very strange yes. Beautiful Alice and Franco looked like a computernerd. Still my favourite song that year, together with the Netherlands.

"I treni di Tozeur" is a very good song. It was my second favourite in 1984 after Ireland and closely followed by Portugal.
marc, I also have a few albums with Alice.

I was ashamed the night of May 5, 1984, when the that Swedish boys with golden shoes won the contest instead such great performers as Franco Battiato and her sister Alice.

Well.. "Ik hou van jou" wasn't just as simple as you mentioned Marc.. The composition might have been so.. but the arrangement and performance of Maribelle stole my heart away. The melody of "Avanti la vie" was much more simple.
The emotion of both of these songs I mentioned were great however, due to their performances...

And about the other songs from '84: "Aufrecht geh'n" still gives me goosebumps !

"Treni di Tozeur" is still considdered as the best Eurosong ever to me. The performers however looked very cold and distant to me !

Waw Thanasis, spot on. I agree with your first 4 but Denmark...no thanks. Italy and Netherlands..... both undervalued that year. Netherlands because it was too simple, too beautiful.... Italy, I think spoiled it a bit with those 3 soprana's...

I treni di Tozeur was the best entry in the ESC 1984. too bad it did not win. My top 5 in 1984 (the year I was born, but I have the DVD with the live footage of the ESC, plus I have all the songs in mp3)
1. Italy
2. The Netherlands
3. Portugal
4. Ireland
5. Denmark

Yes, Jan.
Herrey's are still one of the most underserved and unexpected winners ever. Similar situation repeated in only 2001.

Marc and Dragan:

I agree with you both.

It is the best eurovisionsong ever !

Although 1984 also had numourous classics like "Avanti la vie", "Aufrecht geh'n", "Ik hou van jou", "Lady lady", "Silencio e tante gente" the juries decided to give an unbelievable victory to "Diggi loo" Yes... a juries verdict !

I can fully understand why Italy left the contest after being so very underrated so many times...

Dragan,

I totally agree. This guy is a genius, wrote so many masterpieces.... and Italy should have won big time that year. Alice is one of Italy's best singers, I bought all her cd's and there are so many beautiful songs on them, unbelievable. They just sang their song, no big show, just a simple beautiful song....

Battiato and Alice with "I treni di Tozeur" are the real winners of 1984 and truly Eurovision classic.
