No Fear for the Eurovision stage

Spain: Soraya wishes to go to Moscow

Soraya Arnelas, a famous Spanish pop star with the record of 4 successful albums and various chart hits in 3 years, expressed clearly some few days ago her wish to sing for Spain in the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest. In an interview on a local Radio station on the 16th of October she seemed keen on the possibility of a participation in the Eurovision Contest and asked her fans and the fans of the Contest to get up and start some action in order to get the TVE selection team to make her an official proposal.

Commenting on the various rumours on respective internet forums about her participation in the next Eurovision Song Contest, Soraya said that she was pretty aware of these intense rumours but she made it also clear that she had not received any official invitation for  a participation yet. She has the impression, though,  that “Spain wants her to go for it” and if that is what people want, then “she will do it”. Therefore, she said, the fans should turn to TVE and ask for it by putting together a good promotion of this idea. She made clear though that she does not wish a mediocre act for the Eurovision , she wants something very good, something which would make her country proud.

On the same interview (on the programme Estar en la onda, radio Station Onda Campus), while talking about her newly released album Sin miedo (Without fear) Soraya referred to Kate Ryan, the Belgian 2006 Eurovision Song Contest participant, and their duet song Caminaré. She said that although they have never done any recording session  for their duets in the same studio at the same time, there is a good chemistry between them. After all, she said, their careers are similar and they have the same music influences and electronic sounds on their tracks. In summer 2008 the two singers appeared live on the very popular television casting show, Operación Triunfo, performing together their other duet from Kate Ryan’s latest album Tonight we ride / No digas que no. It was actually the 2005 edition of the same show which made Soraya widely popular in Spain after having managed to leave the show as the first runner up back then.

Max,
we were talking about Spain...and Spain has had many good results throughout the years...way better than any eastern country. Sure they haven't done great lately but that doesn't mean they will never do well again...and after all it's not necessary for a country to be ALWAYS in the top 10.
I just can't see why countries with, like, over 20 top 10 positions in 40 years (a very good record) complain just because they had a few bad results...and if we want to be honest.... were Bruheria, Bloody Mary, Chiki Chiki and I love you mi vida masterpieces? LOL

Max Raspail
Although don't forget that there were far less eastern countries participating in 2001-2003/4, and alot of those that did used juries ;)

"2001: 1 Estonia, 2 Denmark, 4 France, 5 Sweden, 6 Spain, 7 Slovenia, 8 Germany, 9 Malta
(eight "Western" countries in the Top10 - if you leave the Scandinavian-connection out, at least six countries))"

Saying that doesn't really prove anything because the majority of the participating countries were western, and the quality of eastern songs was still quite average at that point. It is obvious to me that since 2004 the quality of all songs, but eastern especially has rocketed :) And nowadays the eastern countries put in alot more effort in terms of who they send and the song, not neccessarily in their national finals where I think the west excels, but the east do take the contest more seriously and that does reflect in their entries, thus their high results :)

@ Mina
You can't take out just a few countries and say, "okay, they ended up in the bottom in these years and in these ones, too, so there was no difference"...
I mean, I can give you a lot of examples which are in contradiction to yours:

2001: 1 Estonia, 2 Denmark, 4 France, 5 Sweden, 6 Spain, 7 Slovenia, 8 Germany, 9 Malta
(eight "Western" countries in the Top10 - if you leave the Scandinavian-connection out, at least six countries))
2002: 1 Latvia, 2 Malta, 3 Estonia & United Kingdom, 5 France, 6 Cyprus, 7 Spain, 8 Sweden
(eight countries - without Scandinavians siven countries)
2003: 2 Belgium, 4 Norway, 5 Sweden, 6 Austria, 7 Poland, 8 Spain, 9 Iceland
(seven countries - without Scandinavians five countries)

Then we got the introduction of the semifinal:
2004: 5 Cyprus, 6 Sweden, 8 Germany, 10 Spain
(four "Westerners" - three without Sweden)
2005: 2 Malta, 4 Israel, 5 Latvia, 8 Switzerland, 9 Norway, 10 Denmark
(six countries - four without Scandinavia)
2006: 1 Finland, 5 Sweden, 6 Lithuania, 10 Ireland
(four countries - only two without Finland and Sweden)
2007: 9 Hungary (one country)
2008: 5 Norway, 9 Israel (two countries - without Norway there rests only one country)

I mean that illustrates the best that it's getting worse in recent years (or let's say "worse for the Western countries" ;) and things weren't that unfair in the years from 2001 - 2004 like I said... even in 2005 and with a little limitation even in 2006 it was possible for a good song to reach the Top10...

Skaat and Buskila are rumored to be our next participants in the eurovision for FOUR years straight now, every year they are tipped to be our next participants only to deny that again
so like 2005 2006 2007 and 2008 it's kind of wiring out to hear that again and again every year.

things were still different in 2001 to 2004...

Really? That hadn't stopped the Uk from being 15th, 16th, and 26th and only having one top 10 position (3rd in 2002). Or Ireland being under the top 10 (11th, 14th, 21th and 22nd), or France being 15th and 18th in 2003 and 2004...and so on.
But Spain still managed 4 top 10 positions in those 4 years.

Sun 26 Oct 2008 12:33:35

besides, things were still different in 2001 to 2004...

At the moment, Spain has as Western country equally bad chances to get a high position like all the others...

Mina
"Spain was in the top 10 for 4 (televoting) years in a row...2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 and under the top 15 for the next 4 years."
Well d'ya know those were the years that Spain used the "Operacian Triumpho" method to select their entry :) Basically a different version of X-factor :)

Great article Niko!!

TVE doesn't want to win Eurovision, only wants a lot of money and audience, TVE hates spanish eurofans. Chiki chiki gave a good level of audience here, very similar to ESC 2002 with Rosa, and between TVE and LaSexta, they got a lot of money with the big promotion of Rodolfo in Spain, and for this reason Chiki Chiki went to Eurovision, but finally we finished out the bottom 5.

I would like to see Soraya in Eurovision, because she will be very glad of to have a big promotion not only in Spain, also in the rest of Europe, and her songs have a good quality I think, for me Soraya could be a good election for Moscow.

ending up in a low place (which she would, coming from Spain)

Hey, I like your optimism..LOL. Spain was in the top 10 for 4 (televoting) years in a row...2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 and under the top 15 for the next 4 years.
If a good singer with a good song goes to esc, and with the help of juries in 2009, why couldn't Spain get a good result? After all, Spain was 16th this year with one of the most stupid songs of the contest.

@Ivri Tenembaum [45169] Sun 26 Oct 2008 07:49:59
Don't be getting people confused nor deceiving them. No way is that Spain's entry for next year. That's not even a rumour. Well, it is...one of yours. TVE has not even made clear about what the NF is going to be about. So let's wait. I'm afraid Soraya would mean a very strong bid on behalf of TVE, so i wouldn't count on her going to ESC, TVE does not want to send anyone who'd have a chance to win it.

On the other hand, I do think a singer like Soraya is exactly what Spain needs to send. She's very self-confident, strong and has a lot of self-esteem, so ending up in a low place (which she would, coming from Spain) would not be devastating for her. Besides, she's already a well-known artist in Spain, so not getting a good position wouldn't close any doors in the music market here in spain. She already has them all open.
