Serbia: Jelena Tomasevic releases debut album

Jelena Tomasevic, Eurovision Song Contest participant of the host country Serbia in 2008, has finally released her long awaited debut- album called Panta rei (a phrase derived from Greek meaning Everything changes).

As expected, the album contains various lugubrious ethno- ballads which perfectly match with Jelena's melancholic voice. But there are also songs in different styles, including one song in R’n’B- sound. All those features make it a rather versatile album.

Nine of the eleven tracks are written by musical mastermind Zeljko Joksimovic, well known to Eurovision Song Contest fans due to his three successful participations in the contest, as well as hosting the competition on home ground in Belgrade 2008. Jelena herself has penned the lyrics to five of her songs. Moreover, she was responsible for the production of one of them. Other contributions come from Dejan Ivanovic (lyricist of Bosnia and Herzegovina 2006 and Serbia 2008) and Fahrudin Pecikoza- Peca (lyricist of Bosnia and Herzegovina 1993 and 2006), who have written the lyrics to two of the tracks.

The album also contains Jelena’s two highly praised Beovizija- hits Oro and Jutro (Beovizija is Serbia's national final to select their Eurovision Song Contest entry).

Furthermore, Nema koga, one of the songs she sang for the soundtrack of the immensely popular Serbian movie Ivkova slava, as well as the previously released single Kosava can also be found on Panta rei. The next single is set to be Okeani

Jelena Tomasevic reached 6th place in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest for the host country Serbia with her ethno-ballad Oro, composed by Zeljko Joksimovic. Besides being responsible for Oro and the Eurovision Song Contest- entries from Bosnia and Herzegovina 2006 (Lejla, sung by Hari Mata Hari, reaching 3rd place) and Serbia and Montenegro 2004 (Lane moje, sung by himself, reaching 2nd place), Zeljko also composed Jutro for Jelena, the song that won Beovizija in 2005. However, due to the fact that the Montenegrin juries have boycotted Jutro in the common national final of Serbia and Montenegro, Jelena was denied the chance to go to Kiev, the host city of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005. Three years later, Jelena eventually got her chance and represented the by now independent Serbia in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest on home- ground.

Here is the full track- listing of Jelena’s first album:

1) Panta rei (Everything changes)

2) Košava (Wind)

3) Okeani (Oceans)

4) Ako opet odlaziš (If you leave again)

5) Med i aoka (Honey and the sting)

6) Oro (Oro)

7) Ne dam na tebe (I don’t give on you)

8) Nema koga (There is no- one)

9) Zovi me danima (Call me for days)

10) Jutro (Morning)

11) Noćas dođi mi (Come to me tonight)

Kosava with English subtitles

Jutro at Beovizija 2005 with English subtitles

Nema koga (on the album there is longer version of the song):

I also thing RTCG is not interested in ESC at all, and I think they don't want to win as well... Imagine them organizing ESC in Podgorica :D :P ;)

I think that RTCG has only ONE goal to achieve and that is PROMOTING OF MONTENEGRIN TOURISM. As u can see on every Montenegrin video they send to promote Montenegrin song at Esc they shaw old towns of Kotor, Budva, Herceg-Novi, they show beaches, sea, everything that reminds of Montenegrin beautiful coast..They don't care if it fits for song, they just need to have promotion in ESC countries... The same thing was with bringing Madonna in Montenegro to have concert. They won over Belgrade, Ljuljana, Zagreb and all big cities to have her in small town such as Budva... why again, just because of promotion of Montenegrin tourism.

I hope it might change, and I hope (L) Milena Vucic (L) might bring something new in Montenegrin entries, but as I said if u see her video without sunny beach and old citadels than RTCG really do care about ESC ... ;)

Comparing Serbian and Montenegrin ESC songs is like comparing Alicia Keys and Rihanna.

Serbia has come with it's own ethno style and changed some things in Eurovision back in 2004. Together with Ukraine we brought etno style in Eurovision that we still have 4 years after.
Serbia also gave us a good winning SINGER, not only PERFORMER and we also gave a good show in Belgrade, so I really think these things are enough from us now. I believe we will send some different style next time.
As for Montenegro, I know they have good singers there but problem is that RTCG is not interested in ESC at all. It seems like they were interested only when they were using Eurovision to make a bad relations with Serbia before independence and they did it. Now they seems like they're lost in place and time.
And for me its Montenegrin songs who are old fashioned ! They sound like from 70s. Serbian songs are class, and it's never old fashioned in the world or Art and Music

Thanks Jelena for the release of your first ever CD.
I have waited 3.5 years for that (since "Jutro" ;)

Jelana's cd is so beautiful !! Well done Jelena and her team !!

It's very easy for me to choose between "Dull pompous ballads" or "catchy soft rock" in ESC terms...Rock by far! I seldom like those pompous ballads, whilst I always like rock songs. So Montengro is best by miles! Maybe those ballads are not considered old-fashioned in Ex-YU, but for Scandi people they sound a bit so, at least not like music which is modern and popular now. Some of those songs were nice...I like more Leilja and Lane moje, which had mopre style and atmosphere.

kokorrutmelle kokorrutmelle

I think Montenegro can send good singers who can do well in esc, but the main problem is, I think, RTCG don't want to let "foreign" and by that I mean Serbian songwriters (that write most songs for famous Montenegrin singers such as Milena Vucic) to write song that will represent Montenegro.

That's why famous Montenegrin singers don't want to even try to compete in this contest. I don't think we will see Vlado Georgijev, Sergey Cetkovic or any Montenegrin star in ESC... The only one I am hoping is Milena Vucic ......................... http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=6jZaoUom5ss ...................... as she said she might do Eurovision, aldo her songs including this one are also from Serbian songwriters...

I am really hoping RTCG will change that rule, and send some decent song at ESC...

Well I have a confession about a Montenegrin song! :P

At one point "Ajde Kroci" was my most played song! :P Don't ask why, because I don't know myself :O :D What I do know is that its a fun song to listen to, even though it is awful, its crap . . but charming! ;)

@ cpbija & marko thanx for the info. I'm so sad that I missed this single. Maybe one day I will find it on sale on a website...

@ night elf interesting to hear that the Montenegrin entries were not a hit even in Montenegro. Both entries were so bland. I don't know if this country has a potential to produce good modern songs ?

Night Elf [43921]
Tue 28 Oct 2008 01:41:07

Well I am from Montenegro and I can say that both of Montenegrin songs in 2007 and 2008 where not hit even in Montenegro. Serbian songs are much better and much more heard everywhere u go in MNE than both Stefans... :D :P ;)

Also I don't think Serbian songs are old fashion... I don't think we heard this ethnic ballads before as Serbian ethnic songs are special (as other countries are) but Serbia recently joined contest so u can't call their song old fashion. Balkan ballads recently joined the contest and I am so happy because of it... :D

But when it comes to 2005 year and whole mess between jury from Montenegro and Serbia I really didn't like neither "Jutro" or "Zauvijek Moja" ... There where so many better songs in my opinion like:
Andrea Demirovic "Sta ce mi dani"
Ivana Popovic "U oku tvom" ... and so on

But between this 2 songs I would rather go with "Jutro" in Kiev.

As for Jelena, I think she has nice voice, she seems to be nice person, but I don't like much her songs, except "Oro" which I think it was amazing but not so impressed with her interpretation.

You must be joking!!!

The two Montenegrin songs have been incredibly boring.
The Serbian songs have been pure class!
And Jutro is a superb song which Jelena sang perfectly!

Both Serbian songs have been really boring! Can't stand this pompous ballad style at all. So old-fashiod, no sense of "control" in the arrangement. Montenegrin songs are so much better...They have some ROCK to them! :)

Jutro was dreadfull too...

@ kokorrutmelle kokorrutmelle

There was a promo CD of oro with all versions and instrumental, but it wasn't on sale, it was only for fans and journalists I think.
RTS didn't make a promotion for Jelena like they did to Zeljko and Marija, because RTS was working hard on ESC 2008 things, which was bad because Jelena didn't have the same oportunity to promote like Marija last time, but I guess RTS didn't even want her to win after all

Why wasn't there any single of "Oro", while singles of other songs by Jelena are mentioned in the article ? Compared to what Serbia did to promote Zeljko in 2004 and Marija in 2007, it's unfair that Jelena did not even get a promotional single. Or am I mistaken ?

I quite liked "Oro". It was one of the best ballads imo. Good luck to Jelena :)

Oro was my biggest favourite this year along with Believe...actually, if Serbia hadn't won last year, I would have voted for Oro, too, but since I always vote for one song, I chose Believe.
Jelena is awesome..I hope her album will be a big success :D

Great article!

I have waited a long time for Jelena to release her first album, all her songs have been great so far!
Oro was wonderful this year but all in all, I prefer Jutro even more. They are both heart breaking but her performance of Jutro was better, she sang with more passion!
I also loved Nema koga and Kosava and I am especially curious about the song Panta rei!
Good luck to Jelena!

Wow, i'm surprised it took her this long to release an album! :) But anyway good luck to her and I think she did Serbia proud :D "Oro" wasn't one of my favourite songs this year, and I did find the performance a bit emotionless. But still I think she was great and seemed like a really nice person in interviews and stuff :D

Ty Flo for the article :D ;)
