LTV announces song submision deadline

Three semifinals in 2009 for Latvia

Latvian Broadcaster, LTV has announced that the deadline of song submission for the Eurovision Song Cotnest national selection show, Eirodziesma 2009, is set for 30th November 2008. They have also announced a new format for the show.

Eirodziesma 2009 starts the new season by introducing the new format of the semi finals as well as some restrictions in selecting the songs. LTV expects the songs from the Latvian as well as foreign authors who have not made their songs public before 1st October 2008.

Each author may submit no more than two songs, some restrictions in the selection apply this year – only one third of all songs qualified for the semifinal may be penned by the foreign authors. Songs submitted for preselction in other countries will also not be allowed. The performer of the song is expected to be a Latvian citizen or a person who is considered by the Latvian legislation to be a non-citizen.

As for the format of Eirodziesma 2009, three semi finals will take place during January and February 2009. Three songs from each selection will qualify for the final. A 10th song will be chosen at the “Second Chance” heat during the last semi final, and the public will be decide the final song to qualify by means of a straight televote. The final of Eirodziesma 2009 takes place on February 28, 2009 at the Ventspils Olympic Center.

The potential participants can get acquainted with the rules and restrictions of the submitting process at Eirodziesma website (in Latvian version only).

Latvia participated in ESC 2008 in Belgrade with the song Wolves of the Sea performed by Pirates of the Sea ending up 11th at the final.

Good luck Latvia!

Not allwoing foreign "composers" is a clever move. Need I say more than "Pirates Of the Sea"?

Latvia had great songs (My Star is one of ESC's best) and finals in the first years, many rock songs etc. During the last years they have gone a bit down the drain. I am sure things will impove with home ground talents

Thanks for explaining it :-)

ChrisP,
The thing is that we in Latvia have citizens, who live in Latvia and non-citizens who live in Latvia. Non-citizens doesn't have Latvian citizenship but do live in Latvia.

My Star is probably my favourite Latvian entry too, but I have to admit, I kinda likedDziesma Par Laimi too!

The performer of the song is expected to be a Latvian citizen or a person who is considered by the Latvian legislation to be a non-citizen.

Forgive me, but what else CAN you be if you're either a citizen or non citizen? Does this mean it's open to performers from anywhere? Or is that meant to mean someone living in Latvia from another nationality, who doesn't have Latvian citizenship?

I've never been throroughly impressed by many of the Baltic entires, let alone just Latvia. The only one I've really liked is Estonia's Partners In Crime. Still, good luck Latvia. I'd like to see a rock song or something dramatic.

"My star" is my no2 Eurovision entry of all times, so if Latvia could come up with something even close to that in quality, I would be very happy!! Brainstorm SOOOOO deserved to win in Stockholm!!

well let's hope it brings Latvia to a better level. Sure the country's done fine lately, even getting 11th with what could be the WORST entry of 2008. But Latvia entered in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2005 great entries and since then the entries have been really disappointed, lacking some true latvian spirits (italian cheesy opera-copycat? eurodisney pirates?...)

I hope Latvia will send a song on the same quality level as "My star"! That song really deserved to win instead of Denmark in 2000!
Lately, I really think the quality of Latvian entries have been low, especially 2007 and 2008!

The best Latvian entry imo is "My star" :)

Well the only Latvian entry that I seriously disliked was 2001, although i've never been a massive fan of their songs. Their 2006 is my fave :D

Good luck to them all the same ;)
