National Final for 2 time runner up

Ukraine chooses Eurovision entry on February 22nd

Ukraine, the country that has finished in second place in each of the last two Eurovision Song Contests, will return to a national final to select it's 2009 entry. The country will be hoping that the winner can go one better and bring the competition back to Kyiv for the first time since 2005 when Ukraine hosted the competition after Ruslana's victory.

In a press conference a short while ago, the Ukrainian national broadcaster, NTU, announced that there will be a national final to select the act that will follow Ani Lorak as ukraine's next Eurovision Song Contest representative. The final will take place on February 22nd 2009.

Artists and composers that want to enter must submit their entries between now and 16th January 2009. Demos and an instrumental version of the song must both be submitted and lyrics must be submitted in both Ukrainian and English languages. A video or at least two photos from a live performance must be included with the submission. Artists must be Ukrainian.

After the submission deadline, NTU will form a seven strong jury to assess the entries. The jury will sit from 21-23rd January and select 30 songs to perform in a semi final. The semi final will take place on 1st February 2009 behind closed doors. From the 30 live performances, the jury will select 15 songs to procede to the televised final.

Voting in the Ukrainian final will be a mix of televoting and sms voting, and a jury. A concert will be arranged in Independence Square for the winner. The square was used during the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest to host a huge party with the show broacast on huge screens to many thousands of people.

The one who think Verka was good must be stupid! Sorry but Ukraine has only send one great song and it was in 2004! The other entries are crap! The only does great becaue neighbour voting and diaspora voting.

LAMA won't participate, they said it not so long ago... though Natalya (lead singer) can change her mind. I dunno. She doesn't sing well when it's live performance.

Gaijtana? I know that the person who is connected with NTU and with the jury is the president of her label. + I know that people from NTU don't mind her to participate. Maybe they would invite her, it's NOT impossible.

I agree. Potap & Nastya should go. They are incredible. They have all chances to win.

Ukraine is my favorite ESC country!

They send quality almost every year and have ended up in my personal top. 3 almost every year too.

They take this contest seriously and aren't afraid to try new things.

Of the rumored names I really want Potap & Nastya Kamenskih to win.

Other than that Lama or Gaytana could be good participants, but no rumor about any of them taking part yet.

Come on guys, we don't even know the singer or the song...
2009 seems to be the contest of "we needn't know the song to say this country is gonna win": look at the comments on Sakis Rouvas' news: Athens 2010 blablabla; look at the comments on Hadise's news: Istanbul 2010 blablablabla... and now it's gonna be Kyiv 2010 without even knowing a single potential name?
Please, let common sense in and let's wait for the songs to come to say Place 2010, if we don't mind..

Kiev 2010 is a popular demand!
Tina Karol should do comeback :)
And Ani Lorak should represent Ukraine in Kiev 2010, and then there will be Kiev 2011 aswell ;)

I have to say that I think Ukraine may actually be my favourite country in ESC history!!! I love every Ukrainian song from 2003 right though to 2008 (including 2005!!!) Every year I worry they will not be able to top their previous entry - but somehow they find a way, so fingers crossed for 2009 :D

I want to go back to Kiev, it was the best in 2005 - my favourite contest this century (if not ever) !

Razom nas bahato - nas ne podolat!!!

Especially this year! It was an outrage that Russia won, and not Ukraine! Ani Lorak is truly the biggest star of Eurovision! I hope she comes back!

Can't wait! I have big hopes for Ukraine every year, and every year they surprise me by being even better than expected :)
Truly, Ruslana, Tina Karol, Verka Serduchka and Ani Lorak is some of the best acts and songs in Eurovision history! If
there had been justice in the competition Ukraine would have 3 or 4 victories now! Truly the best country of Eurovision since 2005!

more info: the date of the special concert on Independence Square is May 2 or May 3. It's not decided yet because May 1 is the national holiday and May 2 is a second day off so the square will be busy probably.

in any case you can see all those events on the official NTU site coz they have on-line broadcast now! )))

@ Ben Gray
I agree with you, 2005 was the year Ukraine sent the worst song.

Ukraine has been very strong in their entires for many years bar 2005. Even when they send a joke entry they manage to make a brilliant act of it, but in my opinion Ani Lorak has been their best so far. Keep it up Ukraine and good luck!

Ukraine is one of my favourite Eurovision nations! Since it's debut, it's produced some amazing music and Eurovision gems! I Love Ukraine!
