Band fight goes public
The Netherlands: De Toppers to split?
The row threatening De Toppers' participation at the Eurovision Song Contest started several weeks ago when broadcaster SBS announced that they would not allow Gerard to make the docusoap ‘Op weg naar Moskou’ for public broadcaster TROS. Gerard has an exclusive contract with SBS and is considered to be the biggest star on the commercial broadcaster's roster. A final decision hasn’t been taken yet, after several meetings between both broadcasters and the management of De Toppers.
On Monday, it became clear that the manager of De Toppers, Benno de Leeuw, was taken into hospital last week which seemed to be the main reason for not coming to an agreement yet. Two days ago, Gordon confirmed the hospitalistion in an interview with Dutch newspaper Het Algemeen Dagblad and Gerard wasn’t amused: "We agreed not to talk about this in the media, because it’s a very sensitive matter."
Gordon also reacted on the problems about the docusoap. "Gerard has to show some balls! His contract is based on his activities as a presenter, not as a singer. The docusoap is all about his singing career" Gordon stated in the interview.
Today, Gerard hit back hard, saying "All fingers are pointing to me; I seem to be the one to blame and that’s not fair. We’re still negotiating about the docusoap, but both our manager and the director of SBS were hospitalised in the past few days. That’s the main reason for the delay. As for Gordon, it’s always the same story and I’m done with it. In the past, he has been saying things about me as well in the media. Everytime I confront him with these stories, he tells me he didn’t say things the way they were published. I’m really fed up with all this and I’m close to withdrawing from the whole project. In that case Gordon and René can go to Moscow together. This Eurovision participation seems to be very important to Gordon, but for me it’s all about fun. Besides that, I’m not calling for work; my agenda is loaded!"
It remains to be seen whether the group can resolve their differences and whether an agreement can be reached about the proposed docusoap. At present, there has been no offical statement from NOS about a change to the Eurovision Song Contest plans, but esctoday.com is monitoring the situation and update you with all the facts as they come.

I dont care anymore. Ive moved out of Holland and to be honest, this Eurovision is lost for us anyway. Im not voting for them and I just hope Ireland does send something decent so I can at least have some pride.
I wouldnt believe this story by the way, it's probably 'news' that originated in the Telegraaf one day when the editors were bored.
Gerard Joling was earlier this evening on Dutch television, and he said he definately won't go to Moscow. Let's see where this ends.
They will still represent the Netherlands guys... so don't be too enthousiastic. And I wish our dear dear Dutch brothers all the luck in the world. Maybe all the villages at the Belgian and German borders, should pass that border and phone for their own country the Netherlands.... but than again, countries like Netherlands and Belgium prefer to play an honest game....
If the Dutch managed to Anouk to represent them, I don't think would worry about a De Toppers split.
Anouk is all kinds of class
* and NOT very beautiful ones.
i consider this good news...
It would be a dream come true if they didnt go to Eurovision after all, then there'd still be hope for the Netherlands.
But unfortunately, it just seems as if they are playing divas... and very beautiful ones.
I read it yesterday in De Telegraaf (newspaper) and I was so happy. I said earlier that they probably would fight before they would go to Moscow. It is no publicitystunt, it has happened before Gerard and Gordon quarelled over things. And it wil happen again and again and again.
i dont think they were gonna do well anyway i hope anouk does it if they dont
Anouk!! please!
Oh dear!
Within Temptation or Anouk after all??? LOL... hope so!
Good luck Netherlands... Guys like this... who set their personal gain in front... don't deserve representing the nice Dutch nation anyway... so, go for it. Go wild... with Anouk or WT... My vote is yours if you do!
They will make it up, but I do not think everybody here wants a docusoap, we already had so many of them. Just make one docu about their way to Moscow and the time they're there !
Anouk please !!!!!!!!!
From De Toppers to De Floppers . . OK sorry that was cheesy!
Tbh, I think its best for the Netherlands if they don't go to Moscow, because the more I look into them, the less I like their music! Although ofcourse it still depends on the song
@ marc x
Then I'm glad I was wrong. Thanks for correcting me.
bring some dutch dance or a rapper to esc
Better for Holland !!!! Send something modern...and younger, galantis.athens
Great! Excellent!!
now maybe the Dutch will pick someone better and more relevent to ESC. I really want the Dutch to do well, but with this old bags is simply not the way; I understand they are very popular in NDL, but their popularity can not be translated to any international success, and that's a fact.
Anouk to Moscow....!!!!!!!!!
Wupiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! There's still hope for Anouk!
maybe they are very good, but they just seem too old fashioned, that it is difficult to picture them being in the final
It would be great for the Netherlands if this old-fashioned band splitted up. Unfortunately this will not happen, for sure...
i suggest Nikki Kerkhof!!!she is great
Oh, the divas!
Send Gerard and Rene, and leave Gordon back home. He stinks!
Hooray! Then stay at home...! And don't forget to tell Anouk that she should go instead...
Or what's about a duet of Jan and Monique Smit? That could be an interesting show, I think...
marc x you're right, they're no joke entry, they're very professional. But they're a bit too old fashioned to me. I think the Netherlands could benefit from a "younger" choice.
Geer & Goor have a long history of bitchfighting, and in the end they always end up as friends. For the moment I still think that it will all be solved.
