LIVE
The show has started! The stage seems to be inspired by the disco era of the 1970s.
1. Ludwig Galea ft. Fidela tal-Bambinu - Lament (Philip Vella)
Ludwig Galea has represented Malta in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest with his partner Julie and finished 12th. This time he presents an operatic ballad that does sound like many others but might be well accepted by the audience. His more mature partner Fidela only sings a few lines and she seems a bit out-of-place on stage. Of course, the classic black suit is perfect for the song.
2. Dominic Cini - I'm in heaven (Elton Zarb/Rita Pace)
The song starts off as a ballad but turns into swing after a while. Dominic Cini seems to enjoy his performance. Nevertheless, the overall entry seems to be too much of a Frank Sinatra impersonation and might not have big chances in the contest.
3. Classic Rebels - Tonight at the opera (Ralph Siegel/Bernd Meinunger as 'John O'Flynn')
This is one of many Ralph Siegel comositions about stage entertainment. The song is very predictable after a few notes heard and the performance far from being outstanding. The vocals are not very strong and it is hard to believe that this song will go very far.
4. Klinsmann - Rock & Rise (Klinsmann Coleiro/Joe Julian Farrugia)
Klinsmann presents an average pop/rock song. He performs his entry all alone stage accompanying himself at the guitar. Overall, the performance is pretty charming but could he be a bit "harder" if he wants to be a rock singer.
After a classical interval act, song five will be presented.
5. Talitha Dimech - Earth & sky (Philip Vella/Gerard J. Borg)
The songs starts off as a ballad and the vocals are flawless. Then the song turns more up-tempo and Talitha gets lost in the high notes. Generally this might not become one of the top favourites.
6. Rosman Pace - One million ways (Rosman Pace)
Rosman Pace presents a pretty old-fashioned mid-tempo song. The vocals are flawless but the stage performance is not very remarkable. Generally a rather kitschy entry.
7. Francesca Borg - Falling in love (Jason Paul Cassar/Mario J. Farrugia)
The last song tonight is a classic Eurovision ballad. Francesca performs it in a very emotional and authentic way. The classy black dress suits the overall impression well. From tonight's semi final, this might well be the entry that has the biggest chance of qualifying.
The show is over. Another seven songs will be presented next week.

please everyone give Malta a break these were just the first of many songs. They may not be outstanding but they were better than some other countries winners last year.
1. Classic Rebels
2. Rosman Pace
3. Dominic Cini
Puh, Rosman Pace seems to be the only one out of these seven who can give us flawless vocals... solid ballad - so far my # 1...
Klinsmann has the best song but guy, what a boring performance!
Talitha and Francesca made an effort, but I think it's now time to wait for the real singers like Eleanor Cassar or Charlene & Natasha who are able to hit the higher notes without getting a heart attack...
i am maltese and mostly i agree with marcus's comments
i just hope for better songs ...
I saw lots of lame comments in here for weeks n noone bothered to delete them.must be really bad comment
anyway
good luck MALTA from CYPRUS

Do we know which songs go to the final ?
I think that there is still better to come in MSFE, I hope! Although have to say, i heard some of the songs which didnt get through but applied to MSFE, and MUCH better than any of these songs! So i think something unjust going on in MSFE. But here is my top 3 of this Semi:
1 Rosman Pace
2 Francesca Borg
3 Ludwig Galea ft. Fidela tal-Bambinu
2
pls europe wait for chiara's ballad......I talk to you later
Malta is one of my favorite countries, but the songs are below average level... I hope Chiara will perfom the best one!!!
let us wait to hear chiara and miriam christine..form these songs thate is not a winner...i guess.
from yesterday heat:
would only save Falling in love and One Million Ways
hope that klinsmann and ludwig have better songs!
1. Classic Rebels
2. Talitha Dimech
3. Rosman Pace
4. Francesca Borg

6. Klinsmann
7. Ludwig Galea ft. Fidela tal-Bambinu
Klinsmann has potential with this song
definetely not for esc but mtv would love that song
i would never said this unless it was true
Hey Malta... Just a note from a friend who actually likes you regularly... If you thought the 15 points collected by "Vertigo" were too many, then "Tonight at the opera" is the obvious choice. Disturbing to see what a level Ralph Siegel has sunken to. And, just as Iceland proved last year, smaller nations get greater finals if they don't make 20 semis... There just is no capacity to pull that off.
But hopefully you will have a worthy winner in there somewhere. Not in this first week, though.
We are doomed!!!!
What's with the ballad, jazz and opera craze??? Will everyone go jury crazy and send that type of song for 2009 with a view to the jury vote?
As for the Maltese first heat......it left me cold. C'mon Malta, you can do better than that!
Thank you very much unkept
I'm not crazy about Klinsmann either but I think it was the best song of the bunch.

Just Rosman's and Francesca's Borg was the best for me.
Can someone post a link of Klinsmann's song, please? It's the only one I haven't heard.
anywhere we can download the ongs from not just maltese show, but the bulgarian shows?
Agreed! Klinsmann's rock and rise is the best
I am Maltese and love my country with all my heart but i have to say i am a bit disappointed with the quality of the show, c'mon us Maltese can do absolutely better than that....
anyway having said that, here are my comments on the songs:
Ludwig ft Fidela tal-bambinu: it's different ok, nevertheless i dislike it. ludwig's vocals are amazing tho
Talitha Dimech: Boring with a capital B...
Francesca Borg: nahh, better than Talitha's song yet still Boring and old fashioned
Rosman Pace: this is good. nothing special yet ok..
Klinsmann: ok so i can't stand Klinsmann but this song is ok, not bad
Dominic Cini: OMG no no no no
Classic Rebels: this is entertaining quite catchy. the best out of this group of songs.
TOP 3 for the 1st heat:
1. Classic Rebels - tonight at the opera
2. Klinsmann - Rock and rise
3. Rosman Pace - one million ways
I watched them on youtube..all except Klinsmann's song; I couldn't find that one.
Anyway from the ones I heard I didn't like any. They all sounded so old fashioned and boring
rosman pace song is cool
Klinsmann im surprised i like it
classic rebels entertaining
domnic disaster
ludwig oww common opera but its not a disaster as some of you said
talitha i like it lotz (studio version its really awesome )
francesca wow!
i like 4 of these
But Klinsmann is currently leading followed by francesca
I've just watched youtube vids of first Maltese semi final. The only bearable song is "One Million Ways" and it is too eurovisionish.
Klinsmann had the best song, imo.
Best song in this group was Klinsman's. I liked it very much. I hope for Ludwig that his other strong is stronger than his grandma duet.
ROSMAN PACE IS THE BEST!
HIS SONG WAS THE BEST!
GOOD LUCK ROSMAN !
UR SONG IS GREAT!!
