Dreamers and passionate musicians

Portugal: The Flor de lis interview

Flor de Lis, a band of traditional Portuguese music with influences of various sounds from around the world will be competing on the 28th in this year edition of Festival da Cancao.

How you define the type of music of the Flor-de-Lis, influences, inspiration for your work, tell us a little about your band?

The essence of our music is traditional portuguese music with great influences openly absorbing the music of the world. Our themes blend traditional sounds, ethnic and good poems. Above all it is music that we love playing and composing.

How did you come up with the idea of competing for the Song Festival RTP?

From the ad through RTP

The song you present to Festival Da Cancao, how did it come about? Was it composed especially for the contest or only afterwards did you decide it would be a good bid for the event?

After composing the song, we though this would be the right one. This is a topic in a set of songs we have composed and agreed that it would be the right choice for the festival Da Cancao.

Todas as ruas do amor is a different theme than we used to see the Festival Da Cancao, with a sound very close to traditional portuguese music. Do you think it can be an advantage or disvantage to your success in the competition?

Nowadays, the public has heard pretty much everything and they are, in my opinion, difficult to surprise. The fact that "Todas as ruas do amor" relates to the roots of our culture helps people to identify with the song. I think it can be an advantage.

When you decided to compete for the online votting ( semifinal) you had for sure goals and objectives outlined. Once selected do they remain the same or have you set new goals?

When we first decided to compete in Festival Da Cancao, our goal was to qualify. Now our goal is to show our music to the world as best as we can. As we are in the final of course we would like to surprise.

What do you think your song has in order to convince the public and the jury to elect you to represent Portugal in Moscow?

Our music is happy, relaxed and dreamy. The traditional sounds that compose it give you a hint that any Portuguese can feel as their own. In my opinion, our song has a very Portuguese identity. It has a combination of melody, rhythm and vocal interpretation that can be distinguished and heard the rest by the world  whether sung in Portuguese.

Of all the winning songs of Festival Da Cancao there is some  you like most?

I like many but if I had to pick some it would be E depois do adeus by Paulo de Carvalho ( one of the most fabulous ever), Lady of the Sea by Vânia Fernandes and Playback by Carlos Paiao.

What about this year, any song you concider stronger, any favorite?

All of them have their own value as well as those who composed and interpret them. Whether or not one identifies  with particular music, one must always admire and respect. In my view, the songs are all in a very similar quality level.

Would like to leave a message to readers of esctoday.com?

Thanks for all the support: thanks for all the moments you have provided us. It has been a great experience and honor to participate in the Festival Da Cancao. We are dreamers and musicians passionate about our project and has been a surprise to see so many passionate fans of Eurovision to give us their vote. Our songs travel from Portugal to the world, thank you for receiving us with open arms.

esctoday.com would like to thank Flor De Lis for granting us this interview.

This is the best song, some others are ok, but innevitably I do think like young people will vote for Luciana or rather Floribella, hopefully the jury as I think its a 50/50 vote will see the potential of this song and give it maximum points and then hopefully the public will vote for this too, that way it may not win on public votes but could still get through based on jury votes like Nonstop did a few years back.

Yes, right...like if never happened before...

Claudio,
try it. If it was that easy to get in the top 10 with a sexy boy/girl, everyone would do it. It's much more complicated than that.

Well in that case we should send Diana Chaves in a bikini suite (even if she may sing off-key) and Cristiano Ronaldo in the background kicking the ball...oh yes baby!!! Portugal would be the winner of Eurovision. Ahahahah!!!! :) :)

Well, the music scene has changed everywhere in the world, we can't expect eurovision to stay in the '60s..if that happened, only 60yos and esc fans would watch it.
lol

I know, and i agree, although it's good to be nostalgic but also embrassing the things like they are today. There is space for everything and everybody in today's ESC and that is arguably and advantage of it, cause many years ago people were kind of restricted to one kind of presentation on stage, and now everything is allowed and that's good in my opinion :)

david,
and many others and even before the '90s! I just mentioned Gina G because she was the 1st one that came to my mind and her song is famous.
I think sometimes people are so nostalgic of the 'good, old days' that tend to forget many things ;)

@Mina

And what about Nina Morato in 94 with her "Je suis un vraie graçon", i loved her, lol, and it's still one of my ESC faves! ;)

I really hope this song goes to Moscow this year...it's fresh, transmits positive feelings and it sounds ver portughese....although I'm affraid that any song coming from Portugal is destined to be underrated as sual. Since they didn't get to win in 2008 with the SUPERB Vania and that GREAT song....I don't see when will this be possible.....
In my opinion, if Flor De Lis wins the ticket to Moscow it deserves to be in the top 10....
Good luck to the most unfairly treated country in the history of the contest! Go Portugal!!!

@Claudio
You should blame Madonna for this "New undressed Era"! :)

I don't think people should be more dressed or whatever, it is what it is, and we are not in the 90s anymore, i agree that those were the fine ESC days, at least in my opinion, but things changed and so did the way artists dress to perform, isn't that obvious? People want to see more skin :)

Anyway, don't be so disapointed for Portugal's ESC final clasifications, of course we should have won already Eurovision, and not only once or twice, i say maybe three or four times at least, we sent quality, we are one of the most classiest ESC participant countries no matter what people say!
Many of the fans here started watching ESC only after the year 2000, so i careless for their opinions.

Portugal should never withdraw, never, and countries like Luxembourg and Italy should return to Eurovision stage.

The way to win in these days is through diaspora and neighbouring and none of these are in Portugal's favor, but it has been like this since the very first beginning. That doesn't mean we should quit, besides a true ESC fan knows very well how classy Portugal can be.

Claudio,
the '90s???? Singers were dressed 'conservatively'???
Yep..Gina G was really conservative in 1996!

As for Kalomoira last year, I didn't see the Czech girls go very far with their outfits.

Claudio Silva [52446]
Tue 17 Feb 2009 14:46:46

My Vision: Yes, let's just start funeral song contest shall we?

Since when the Eurovision was a funeral contest in the 90s?

At that time people were dressed like real singers and not like prostitutes like it happens in these daysjust take a look at most of the singers who were in the Eurovision for the last couple of years...this is how some countries take advantage of the tele-voting, because people vote for the girl who is almost naked and was shaking her breasts during her performance.

How do you think Kalomira got the 3th place last year? It was not because of the song, much less because of her voice...honestly the girl can't sing...the only reason why she did so well in the contest was because of the way she was dressed and the dance routine that she did on stage.

* Performers would be dress up in a conservative and decent way, with no signs of nudity, like it's happened so many times before

LOL this must be the best suggestion I've ever read on this site!

Flor de Lis is my fave and i hope they represent my country!!!

When it comes to previous entries, i also agree we deserved so much.... For example, in 1989!

Da Vinci were the best!

Why we ended up at number 16 is a mistery!

ALIBI BOY [52480]

as much as i want malta to win, i honestly wish that portugal wins the contest.

shame how after 45 years thet never got a top 5 position.

why do they suffer so much for voting remains a mystery, cos many times portuguese song deserved much much better.

good luck and i hope we can go to lisbon one day.

was there 4 years ago, and i loved it to bits.

THIS WOULD NOT BRING THE ESC TO LISBON 2010. NOT IN THE LEAGUE AS LAST YEARS BEAUTIFUL SONG, WE SHOULD BE ALL GOING TO LISBON THIS YEAR FOR ESC , NOT MOSCOW

"Performers would be dress up in a conservative and decent way, with no signs of nudity, like it's happened so many times before."[(i]

Yes, let's just start funeral song contest shall we?

Please... don't be so bitter. Portugal may never win, or maybe they will one day... but it's the same with may other countries.

To turn this event to the most boring in the world... I don't know if it's the best way really. Sorry. I can see your concern but, just relax.

Anyway good luck to Portugal! I agree with your Ireland/Portugal comment, very true.

I would love to see my country winning the Eurovision Song Contest, at least once. Thinking that probably I will die without seeing Portugal winning the contest is kind of depressing for me, since I am a Eurovision's fan. But I am a realistic person and I know that Portugal will never win the contest, we already sent so many great songs, especially in the 90s (and much better than Ireland, who won the contest 3 years consecutively) and we never did better than a 6th place.

I honestly think that Portugal should withdraw from the contest, even if some people say that our songs are beautiful or that Flor-de-Lis will do well in the Eurovision, we all know what will happen...come on, let's face it, 50% jury isn't enough to change things...Immigrants will continue voting for their country...Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark will continue with their neighboring games (12 points for you, 12 points for me)...Eastern European countries will continue voting for each other, like the Nordic countries do...and the Western Europe will continue pretending that Portugal does not exists...so what's gonna change? Nothing!!!

If I was the responsable for the organization of the Eurovision, this would be the rules for the contest:

* Each country has to sing in their mother language and the only countries that can participate with a song in english are the UK and Ireland.

* Countries can't vote with their maximum scores in neighbor countries, for example (Portugal can vote for Spain but only with points from 1 to 7...the 8, 10 and the 12 can't be given, since Portugal and Spain are neighbors).

* In order to finish the immigration voting, there would be in each country national juries that would give the votes, with no tele-voting at all.

* Performers would be dress up in a conservative and decent way, with no signs of nudity, like it's happened so many times before.

These are some of the rules that I think should be studied and would have a huge impact on Eurovision.

With the Contest of nowadays, Portugal will never win...that's a sure.
