LIVE
The show has started. A medley of Irish Eurovision Song Contest entries is presented. In fact, it is a medley of almost all Irish entries in the contest since 1965. Among them, of course, the seven Irish winning songs in the competition. The warmest reaction so far tonight goes to the 20,000€ that can be won tonight. Jury member Jerry Springer is now introduced.
Song 01 - M.N.A - Flying
Current poll result: 4.8% (5th)
A girl group opens the competition. The present a catchy and entertaining but rather dated up-tempo song that could have taken part in a any national final in any country in the last 30 years. The performance is strong and goes well with the song, although the vocals are a bit shaky once in a while.
Song 02 - Laura-Jayne Hunter - Out of control
Current poll result: 37.2% (1st)
After a very Irish The voice opening, the second entry tonight turns to a up-tempo disco song with a catchy melody. The stage changes from Irish green to devil red through the performance. The choreography works well with the song. The vocal performance is not perfect and the singer goes off-key rather often, especially in the high notes.
Song 03 - Lee Bradshaw - So what
Current poll result: 8.4% (4th)
The first ballad tonight. The melody is memorable but it might be too much in the style of the no-so-succesful Irish entries by male soloists between 2001 and 2004. The performance is confident and the vocals are flawless, but the overall impression might not be a very lasting one.
Song 04 - Johnny Brady - Amazing
Current poll result: 2.8% (6th)
A mid-tempo ballad by a male soloist. The singer obviously tries too hard to sound like a rock star which makes the overall performance not very authentic. The music has some catchy parts, but it gets very repetitive after a while.
Song 05 - Kristina Zaharova - I wish I could pretend
Current poll result: 17.6% (3rd)
Ireland has not been represent by a female solo performer since 1998. Kristina tries to be the first one in 11 years with her ballad. The acrobatic dance performance adds a nice touch to the song, but it might be a bit over-the-top. The vocals are very dramatic and might come out better if there were a bit more hold back. The ballad has a catchy melody, but it gets a bit monotonous towards the end.
Song 06 - Sinead Mulvey & Black Daisy - Et cetera
Current poll result: 29.2% (2nd)
A very catchy rock song closes the competition. The straightforward stage performance and the 1980s clothes suit the song very well. The vocals are strong and the band obviously manages to entertain the audience. As no such song has been selected for Moscow yet, it could well stand a chance in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.
The 1994 wining song Rock 'n' roll kids is now played once again.
The four regional juries will now give their verdict. Song six in the lead.
Sinead Mulvey & Black Daisy will represent Ireland in Moscow.

i was dissapointed to see how badly "out of control" did. she deserved more than 9 from jury, as tactically this song may have went well with european friends,., perhaps we need a sort of international jury also?!
although i dislike "et cetera" i have come to accept that it was the better song according to both jury and televote! and it will be getting my support
(although i dont think itll be in my ipod...)
I have to agree with Jim, it seems alot of people on this site, no matter what song Ireland send criticise it....personally I am very proud of Sinead, she did a fantastic job on the night and for the first time in years I am happy with the song Ireland is choosing...it's extremely catchy and hopefully will stand out enough to get into the finals...all the rubbish out the juries..is just that..RUBBISH,....the best song and best performance won on the night fair and square, so all the Irish out there, lets give Sinead our full support and if god willing bring back Eurovision to it's rightful home....Dublin 2010!!
I love this song (Et cetera) so catchy!
I am Irish and I don't think there was a conspiracy at all. Don't for when Linda Martin, Niamh Kavangh and Rock 'n' roll kids won, they were run away victors in the Irish final. Personally I didn't think the song should have won, but thats my opinion, I don't think Linda Martin etc contributed to the final result. Back in the real world were ordinary people are talking about Fri nights competition, the majority of the people liked the song so where is the problem. Look at UK the way LLoyd webber introduced Jade into the competition without her auditioning. He heard her singing and wanted her in the competition. To me that was unfair for anyone else that had to go the audition process. The only problem I had with Fri night is that there were only 3 on the jury and only 4 areas. There should have been 5 on jury panel on the night and they should have come from 7 areas and again that is just my opinion
Great song from Ireland this year!!! Glad to see Ireland back in the contest
For godness sakes folks, get off the conspiracy nonsense. None of the juries were in contact with each other so all voted separately. As for how come Et Cetera got 3 top marks from 3 juries, because it was the best overall solid performance on the night and this was recognised. I can also state that the jury in Sligo each had it placed in diffrent positons, it was not a foregone conclusion but an accumulation of points by placings that made it reach top spot. It only narrowly pipped I Wish I Could Pretend which also narrowly pipped Out of Control, now get over it! It was all done fair and square.
OOOOOHHHHHH no.........
A bad choice again for Ireland.....
This song is really nothing special !!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry guys.
it seem's to me,that what ever Ireland,send's to Eurovision,is always going to have critic's.last year the horror "THE TURKEY"and people,said rubbish(rightly so).now Ireland,send a good strong song,and still complaint's.i like "Et Cetera"it has a strong chance in Moscow.at first i liked "Out of Control"but on the night,it didn't work as a performance.it's best that ireland,didn't send a ballad,as France,and Iceland,have that taken,care of.good luck to Sine'ade and the Girls.
I was a member of the 3 member Cork Jury. There were 3 members each one involved in music or showbiz and one with a keen interest in the Eurovision.
I am seriously pissed off at how people keep saying our Juries were corrupt!
Each of us voted individually and as it happens one of my panel had to abstain and not vote as she knows one of the songwriters of ET CETERA.
This could not have fairer.
It is really pissing me off reading these ridiculous comments because a song you liked didn't win. The fact is that the Cork jury and I can only speak for them felt that Out Of Control was messy and all over the place with much too much going on wheras Flying, I Wish I could Pretend and Et Cetera were much stronger options as entries for the eurovision song contest.
So there.
12 points to Ireland.
Just as good as last year.
Just how were the people who wrote song 6 involved with the juries, as some claim here? Are you telling me that the Sligo, Cork and Limerick juries were full of Jonas' friends from Sweden? I think not.
Or perhaps plane loads of Swedes were flown in to Dublin secretly during Friday and issued with Irish sim cards and given instructions to vote thousands of times?
Or perhaps, simply the best song won, even if it wasn't the favourite of some conspiracy theorists here!
I love 'Et cetera' - it's currently No2 on my list - behind UK - at least until Norway pick Fairytale tonight!
The reason Song 2 didn't score well was simple, it was not a ballad. An Irish jury is always going to favour a ballad over a modern song.
Hello! The winner was not a ballad!
"How can RTE allow a songwriter to compete that is FRIENDS with the jury groups and belong to their "club"!?!?
Gosh... I didn't expect this from Ireland...
Yes... et cetera won the public vote and I respect that... but the jury voting was rigged it was just sad... corruption in Irish Eurosong NF voting haha! Who would have known?"
The jury isn't corrupt. The reason Song 2 didn't score well was simple, it was not a ballad. An Irish jury is always going to favour a ballad over a modern song. And ballads are going to feature a lot more strongly now, with juries back.
If you want to find corrupt votes, just wait till Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey vote in the contest......
Öhhh, some comments are just to stupid
anyway good luck Ireland
It seems the composing team had friends all over the country, from Cork to Sligo, and from Limerick to Dublin. That's why every jury (except DubliN) gave max. points to Et Cetera! LOL. ESC fans are so good at making conspiracy theories. What's next? Can you tell me where is the Area 51? Or what is the secret behind the Bermuda Triangle? You know it all!
The song earned 78 points out of 80. That's what I consider a fair winner. Period.
Going back to the 90s? With this we're in the 80s
Good luck in the semifinal Sweden, you'll need it, oooops I mean EIRE (¬¬
lol.
The song per se is not bad (not so much) but it sounds kind of dated to me, but don't you think we're going back to the 90's with most of the songs chosen so far? Some really remind me of the 90's I don't know...
@ Len
the talent isn't defined by a victory in a national final where not even the majority of the population watch.
it's defined by success in the charts. and your idol is a noone.
you shouldn't look in ESC to find talents, you should look in last.fm or myspace.
song 5 should be the winner, actually. Irish people do not let a latvian represent themselves in moscow
I still can't understand why some people wanted that abomination titled "Out of Control" to win. It made no sense, it was a total mess, it had no style of genre. It was just a failed attemp to mix Celtic music with some electronica. And the singer coundn't sing. If I were one of the juries, I wouldn't have voted for that rubbish either...
The fact it was the favourite of the fans doesn't mean anything. Remember all the "fan favourites" from 2008: Sweden, Switzerland... they didn't go anywhere.
Did any Brits vote?
(We could btw)
Why all the hatred toward Jonas in this forum? After a second place in Denmark and now a convincing win with both the juries and the televoters in Ireland, I don't see how anyone can deny his talent.
Congratulations Ireland on a fun, upbeat song with an energetic and professional performance. I hope this goes far.
I think in this case it's ridiculous to complain about the juries...
They had the same favourite like the people...
If you really want to complain about juries, then look at Slovenia where the jury constantly gives a big fat ZERO to the televoting-winner...
Ben Gray> We all agree that the winner deserved its victory as it won the televote. However, the strange voting pattern of the jury is clearly explained by the fact that song #6 was made by people involved in the juries.
i think its great that it won my prefrence was song 2 and 6
but i think that song 2 deserved more points
at least she can sing
unlike many other countries entrys lol
dont get me rong they are song exclent singers too.
Very good choice Eire, well done!!! "Out of control" was a mess. And I'm glad that DULL song from Latvia didn't win.
Oh and for the record, Latvia IS an Eastern European country (despite what the Latvian composer said on the show tonight), in the sense that it's a former Soviet-bloc state. Having a lot of snow doesn't make you a Northern European country, idiot! Switzerland has snow until spring every year. The Acropolis in Athens was covered in snow in the middle of April a couple of years ago for god's sake! Learn history, geography and English, and next time submit a song to the Latvian national selection!

well song 2 was my fave , but the juries were just members of the public werent they? i think they got it wrong, but corrupt? i dont know about that. i mean with a song written by a latvian and so many latvians in ireland , surely if they wanted song 6 to win , they would have given less votes to song 5 , surely?
