Part four

Introducing the 2009 entries: Denmark

All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still two months away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part four is dedicated to the entry from Denmark.

Basic information

PerformerBrinck (Niels Brinck Kristensen)
SongBelieve again
LanguageEnglish
Music:  Lars Halvor Jensen, Ronan Keating, Martin Michael Larsson
LyricsLars Halvor Jensen, Ronan Keating, Martin Michael Larsson
Draw9th in the second semi final

The song

Believe again is a classic mid-tempo pop ballad with some rock elements in the style of Ronan Keating, who co-wrote this song. He is no stranger to the Eurovision Song Contest as he has already co-hosted the contest in Dublin in 1997. The lyrics tell a story about how hard it is to go back to normal after a tough breakup and the desire to believe in love again:

                    I picked up the pieces
And put them back were they belong
                    But something is missing
                    Though I look the same
                    I'm not as strong
But I'm gonna learn to trust again

And I, I wanna believe again
I wanna believe in something bigger
                    Than the two of us

The singer

Brinck's first successes in the music business came as a songwriter. He wrote the theme of the successful drama series Anna Pihl, which debuted in 2006. He also wrote the song The one, which was the first single released by The X Factor winner Martin Hoberg Hedegaard.

In 2008, Brinck released his first album. It would peak at number three in the Danish charts. The singles In the end I started (a duet with Maria Marcus) and I don't wanna love her reached number 36 and number 18 respectively.

He won the Danish national final this year with the song Believe again. The song became a hit and would be the first Danish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest to peak at number one of the charts since Rollo & King's Der står et billed' af dig på mit bord did so in 2001.

The national selection

The Danish broadcaster decided not to hold semi finals this year and returned to the classic national final with ten songs competing. There were no less than three rounds of voting: In the first round, the top four were chosen by a jury and SMS voting. Those four songs competed in pairs and the favourite of each pair made it to the superfinal, where the eventual winner was chosen by SMS voting.

Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest

Denmark entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1957, which was the second edition of the show. After a successful debut (third place in Denmark) and the first Scandinavian victory in 1963, the country took a break from the contest in 1967 and would not return before 1978. In the 1980s, Denmark produced a rather high number of successful songs but it would take until 2000 that the Olsen Brothers brought the contest to Denmark again. The last top ten finish in a final to date came in 2005.

Vi ønsker Danmark og Brinck held og lykke og et godt resultat i Moskva!

I like the video that has been made this year (well, I have liked the other years too) - I think it's brilliant to make it simpel with some dark tones, and mostly just broken with one of the most beautyful sybols in our country - the rapeseed fields (god I'm missing the summer...!)

For Brinck in the semi/finale, I think he will end up between 8th & 15th, but I can be positive surprised! :)

Actually, I liked Hera Bjork's song more than this one in the Danish MGP, so this entry is (undeservedly, I admit :)) under the you-took-the-vistory-from-my-fav label :)

No doubt it is good enough. So Ronan Keating-ish, and very well composed and sung, though I still cannot hokk myself on this song enough to put it in my top favorites.

Denmark has a recent history of a good male vocals/songs - 2004, 2005, 2008. This song is better than last year's in my opinion and gives us a pure pop song which could be acceptable to anyone.
I mean, you can say you don't like it, that you don't like it enough to vote for (i'm in this club :)), that you feel it's kind a pale, it's not original, but you cannot say it's not carefully written/sung/performed in order to show us the good pop is still on :)

Was it the song or the singer that made people vote for Denmark?

Keith,
it was the singer. All night long was one of my least favourite songs of the contest, it didn't tell me absolutely anything. But when I saw Simon perform I was sure he would be in the final...and if the song had been better, he could make it to the top 10, I'm sure.
Maybe Denmark can send him again some time :D

Denmark was totally underrated by the fans last year (#33 on the Escstats chart) and ended up doing quite well on the nights, first by finishing 3rd in their semi and then by managing a #16 finish in the final. And they did all that with a song not too dissimilar to this. So that begs the question: Was it the song or the singer that made people vote for Denmark? Undeniably Simon Mathew was very charming, good looking guy and his casual style amid all the glitter and gimmicks was a welcome relief. In 2005 Jakob Sveistrup also put Denmark in the Top 10 with a similarly likeable, casual pop number.

And now they're trying again. This time with a guy much less charming than Simon and Jakob, but with a song written by Boyzone general Ronan Keating himself. Will the composer's celebrity make up for the singer's lack of charisma? Or will juries and televoters consider the song and see it for what it is: a very likely summer hit regardless of (or despite) Eurovision merits? We'll see. I've had this song on my personal Top 10 for a long time and with a good performance in Moscow, I may send a vote or two Denmark's way. Good luck to them anyhow! :D

A great, modern sound that wouldn't be out of place in the charts today. The song deserves a top 5 placing...

Very Ronan Keating and similar to Danish entries from 2005 and 2008. A certain qualifier for the final but not sure it's a winner, unless the vocals improve.

guys this year is going to be very difficult beacuse is many good songs ( in my opinion ), and i dont speak about winning songs i speak general, so exept from some countreys who is going to pass to the final beacuse of diaspora ( some of them have good songs some of them bad songs ) the places for the rest countreys is very little..whell from 2 semifinals is going to pass 18 countreys via televoting and for sure is going to pass : Armenia, Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, Latvia, F Y R O Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia, Azerbaijan, Romania, Hungary and one nordic countrey ( most probably Norway ), so the places for the rest countreys is only 8 , whell statistics says that always pass 2 -3 songs who is not favorys ( dark horses ) and personal i thing that 2-3 darks horses is going to be : Hungary, Belgium and Poland, so we have 5 places only for many good songs like : Sweden, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Switzerland, Malta, Slovenia, Lithuania, Moldova, Denmark, Portugal and Cyprus ( sorry but i like my countrey song :P ) which countreys is going to be lucky? :P if we have and in semifinals 50/50 voting maybe some things was more easy for a lot of countreys but National jurys are only in the final :( for big 4 favour only maybe? ;)

The funny thing about his song is that he sounds EXACTLY like Ronan Keating! Especially in the 30 first seconds of the song. So he's one heck of a "wannabe" :P But good luck Brinck, you'll probably get 12 pts from Norway this year as well ;P

Well, Ronan Keating was on a TV programme earlier this afternoon and he was talking about what he's been doing lately and there was no mention of him writing the song for Denamrk. Very disappointing haha :D

@El Diablo

Thank you! All this time I knew he reminded me of someone, but couldn't remember who LO. Nickleback of course!

Anyway, Nickleback-like or not, I'm not that keen on this song. As someone already said, it's radio-friendly, but not something I'll vote for. It's nice, but that's all.

Good luck from Bosnia :)
