Introducing the 2009 entries: Serbia

All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still two months away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part twelve is dedicated to the entry from Serbia.

Basic information

PerformersMarko Kon and Milan Milan Nikolić (Performing as Marko Kon & Milaan)
SongCipela (Shoe)
LanguageSerbian
MusicMarko Kon, Milan Nikolić, Aleksandar Kobac
LyricsMarko Kon, Aleksandar Kobac
Draw:  4th in the second semi final

The song

Cipela is an up-tempo comedic song mixing various styles with a folkloristic arrangement. Through the lyrics, the singer tell that he has seen the whole world and that he feels at home everywhere. Still, the love of his life did not want him until he became rich:

                    Moja stara cipela
                    Pola sveta videla
Gde god da stanem tu mi dom
                    Tamo pa vamo
                    Istok pa zapad
Ma gde god stigao bio sam na svom

                    Nije, nije, nije me htela
                    Sve dok pare ne skupim

                    My old shoe
Has seen half of the world
Wherever I stepped, I was at home
                    Every so often
In the East and the West
Wherever I got, I felt I belonged there

She did not, not, not want me
                    Until I had the money

The duo

Marko Kon is a successful singer, composer, arranger an record producer. He plays various musical instruments including guitar, saxophone and  drums. With Aleksandar Kobac, who co-wrote Cipela, he formed a very successful duo in Serbia. During an esctoday.com interview, he said: "I have produced over 800 acts which are registered by SOKOJ (Union of Yugoslav Composers' Organisations) [...]. So, I am in the business since 1994 and for all these years I have had at least three songs which would end in the year's top ten list."

Milan Nikolić grew up in Paris, where he would graduate from the Conservatory in 2004. He is one of the most successful accordion players of Serbia having not only released a series of albums but also having won many awards.

They will be the first duo to represent Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest, even including the participations of the Serbian broadcaster under the flag of Yugoslavia. In Moscow, they will be backed by ballet dancer Katerina Gromolic and the dancers and singers Ljubisa Dincic, Jovan Sejnjanovic and Igor Knezevic.

The national selection

The national song festival Beovizija once again selected the Serbian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. After some confusion about the results of the semi final and a withdrawal, eleven acts competed in the national final. Marko Kon and Milan Nikolić won the selection having been the favourites of the jury and the number four among the televoters. The favourites of the televoters, OT Bend, were only seen sixth by the jury.

Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest

Serbia entered the Eurovision Song Contest as an independant country in 2007 and manged to win on its debut with Molitva. Last year, Oro finished sixth on homeground. Other entries submitted by the Serbian broadcaster took part under the flags of Yougoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro in the years 1974, 1982, 1991, 1992 and 2004.

Marku Konu i Milanu Nikoliću želimo svu sreću i dobar rezultat u Moskvi!

After some listenings, it is not that bad AGAIN because this year is the weakest this decade... still not deserve final imo but it well as a garuanteed qualifier each year (with Ukraine and Greece in the second semi , and one baltic because of many baltics nordic in the semi :) (i bet it will be both Estonia and Lithuania, but one could miss out)

I agree with Petar!!!

Spain have a totally trash song this year, I don't like it!!!
And Patricia Kaas is a Diva and star so I hope that Spain will be in the bottom and France on the top at this year finale!!!

Go Serbia we like you!!!!
12 points from Bosnia in finale!!!

Greetings to everyone from one of the most beautiful countries in whole world - from Bosnia & Herzegovina!!!

The competition at Beovizija was probably the weakest so far, so I think this was a wise choice for Serbia. It's different, something we're not used to see them send at the ESC, it's funny, catchy, so why not after all? It's one of those songs that you either love or hate. Let's wait and see how Europe feels about it.

Good luck from Bosnia.

I would not put Patricia Kass and Soraya in the same sentence.
Soraya might be popular, but her song is probably the ugliest one in the competition this year.
Complete rubbish.

Patricia is surely the star of the year.
Diva with the great song.

"disgused or not every viewer can vote for any country, no matter if he likes the song, singer, singer's dress or a country !"

Of course, he CAN, he has the ability to do so, but I find it rather disgusting...

I think it's worth a try to use the juries. ESC is losing its popularity in the Western countries in any case, the comeback of the juries served us a few great entries this year or do you really think Patricia Kaas, ALW or Soraya Arnelas would have started otherwise?

@ Max Raspail

dude, u go back and read my comment, and quote a part where I said its ok.
I said every viewer HAS A RIGHT to vote for anything he/she wants, and thats a fact. If it's OK for him to vote for a country and not a song, thats his own problem.

About juries, Im not very optimistic becouse I know some of them will vote politcly, if not even being corupted or something.
Im afraid winning songs in future will not be viewer's favorite (but jury) and ESC could loose its popularity and many viewers and voters

@ cpbija 89
No wonder you don't like the idea of juries coming if you really think that it's okay to vote for a country only for being this country...

I've got the same opinion like Frode, I find this behaviour absolutely disgusting...

@ Frode

disgused or not every viewer can vote for any country, no matter if he likes the song, singer, singer's dress or a country !

If jury gives points becouse they like a country, well thats a problem then. and believe me, i don't trust them much (i mean juries)

Well. It's exactly because of people like you the voting system has been changed. What a completely stupid approach you have. It disgusts me!

This was the best song on offer in the Serbian Final, and Zeljko was right. The much-praised Ana Nikolic was a tragic performance. The lady looked stiff, cheap, can't dance ,and amaturish on stage, no star quality and I wonder how some wanted her to win, might have ended last in Esc. While Cipela is fresh, catchy and different, plus Marko performs very relaxed and assured on stage, like this entry a lot so good luck Serbia.

@ serbia: Stage was too big and it just didn't work well on TV screen - I agree with that, when I have watched it something was missing there, some connection between audience and hosts, atmosphere was great but...
