The song
Aven Romale is an unusual up-tempo song with a folkloristic arrangement and hip-hop elements. Through the lyrics, the singer tells that he is proud of his Romani lifestyle and he invites everyone to sing with him:
Hate me or love me, baby
Speed up from null to eighty
In the next three seconds
Music turns you to slave it
Aven Romale!
If you really wanna understand
Just sing it with me
Aven Romale!
I can make you really sing like Gipsy
The band
Lead singer Radoslav Banga, who had already been successful as a solo artist, founded the band Gipsy.cz in 2006 with Vojta Lavicka (violin), Petr Surmaj (guitar, accordion) and (double bass). Their unusual style, which mixes traditional Romani music with rap and pop music, was an instant success and the same year, they won the Andel Award in the newcomer category. Since then, Gipsy.cz have went on to become one of the most popular Czech music acts in the world. In 2007, they went on tour thourgh Europe and played in eight different countries. Later, they would go even further and give concerts in South Korea.
The band has released two albums so far. Their debut album Romano hip hop was a big success in the Czech Republic, where it peaked at number eight and would remain on the charts for 43 weeks. The debut single of the same title reached number six in the charts and is their biggest hit to date. The song was also voted Song of the year by the readers of the music magazine Filter. Their second album Reprezent was released in 2008. It reached number eleven in the charts.
The band tried to represent the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest on both previous occasions. In 2007, they entered the national final with the song Muloland, but could not win the selection just like the year after, when they competed with Benga beating. However, that song managed to enter the Cezch single charts, where it peaked at number 51 and would remain on the charts for two months. In 2009, they were chosen internally by the Czech broadcaster to represent the country in Moscow. The song Aven Romale was chosen among two entries presented to the audience.
The national selection
After two classic national finals in 2007 and 2008, the Czech Republic went for the smallest national selection in the 2009 national final season. Gipsy.cz had been chosen internally and presented two songs in a TV show. The winning song was chosen by televoting and it was a narrow decision as Aven Romale got 53% of the votes.
The Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest
The Czech Republic was one of the last European countries to join the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007. They have not been very successful since finishing last in the 2007 semi final and second last in the second semi final of the 2008 contest. It was the seventh country to finish last on its debut (and San Marino would become the eighth one the year after).
Přejeme České republice a Gipsy.cz hodnĕ štěstí a dobrý výsledek v Moskvě!

See ya in Prague 2010!!! ;-)
love it! good luck czech republic!!!! it should qualify but czech republic doesn't have friends.
Miloš, Verona is not disco, but eurodance and has some beautiful songs. Gipsy are original and funny show but I dont like that music style.
I will be very surprised if this horrid mess doesn't finish last in the first Semi.
I'll be fair and say the backing track is actually kinda good. The rapping, however, is painful.
@ serkan
who cares about Hadise !! i wish some people would stop promoting their own nations on other nations articles its just sad and wrong
I dont like it. I wont work.
I'm waiting for Hadise's introducing. =(
But for now, more about Hadise click here

Another bad entry from the Czech Rep, surely you can do alot better than this!!
i think a low placing for this in the semi
it just su.cks
The worst entry this year!!!!
Sorry but aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaa......
O points from me for CZ!!!!!
The best Chech song is Have Some Fun by Tereza. I don't like this year entry
Sorry, but Good Luck from Poland
this is simply horrid !!!
the worst entry in years!
@ Milos
but for pop songs or for ballads, it is very complicated.
OK, then ballad in English next year!
P.S. I don't like "Aven Romale", "Do tou wanna was better"!
Marku, prosimtě Verona, takový disko! Gipsy.cz jsou originální a nezapomenutelní!
The song is OK. By far NOT the worst entry this year (that should go to either of the Benelux entries), I actually like it. The Czechs made a great start with Kabat two years ago (I voted for that), came close in having the worst song on the contest last year and this year they go for the most bizzare song of all. However I think their chances of making it to the finals are minimum to none.
hrozné to je, preco ste neposlali Veronu?
it s awful, why not Verona?
Simple song, almost childish. It does have the famous "freak factor" though and it may qualify. It is not as good as last year's Latvian entry though.
@ Jon
how do u know they will write tomorrow about Iceland
Can I just say what a fabulous entry this is. The meaning behind the lyrics moves me every time, the depth to the music will really bring this contest to a new level. And the superhero costume compliments the song perfectly, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dolche + Gabana and Gucci can all go stuff themselves, because who needs them when we've got such exquisite clothing as this.
I think this entry could only be better if they had a "Hell Machine", like dear Svetlana, with me dancing inside it wearing nothing but a thong, but I suppose I can't be picky (You all know its true though!)
Btw my gypsy senses tell me this entry will finish within position number 42nd and 1st.
This is the worst song of this eurovision
worst czech entry
NUL POINTE
@ Layla Al-Magnuna

I like the Czech song. Full of life, and different. I LOVED their first songs. I tend to like rock songs in ESC a lot.
I like this song !!! Good Luck Gipsy CZ !!! AVEN ROMALE !!!
Can't like this, it's at the bottom of my list, good luck anyway!
" Listen the song and free your frozen mind, and let the colours all behind..... "
I still don`t understand this song. It is funny, but in my opinion song and performance are terrible for eurovision.
