Introducing the 2009 entries: Moldova

All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still six weeks away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part nineteen is dedicated to the entry from Moldova.

Basic information

PerformerNelly Ciobanu
SongHora din Moldova (Hora from Moldova)
LanguageRomanian and English
MusicVeaceslav Daniliuc
LyricsNelly Ciobanu, Aristotelis Kalimeris, Andrei Hadjiu
Draw15th in the second semi final

The song

Hora din Moldova is a folkloristic up-tempo dance song following a traditional structure. Through the lyrics, the singer invites the listeners to dance the Hora with her, a traditional dance from the Balkans that is performed by a group of people in a circle. Israeli and Serbian representatives have already sung about their national versions of this dance in 1982 and 2008 respectively.

All the mountains, all the seas
All the winds are dancing hora
                    It's a dance you've never seen
                    From my country called Moldova

                    Ra he hei he hei
Hai la hora // Join the Hora
Hai la Hora din Moldova // Join the Hora from Moldova
                    Ra he hei he hei
                    Lute-i hora // Hot dance
Lute-i hora în Moldova // Hot dance from Moldova

The singer

Nelly Ciobanu had her debut as a musician in 1993, when she was 18 years old and formed the duo Master Dinamit with her brother. However, she became famous over the following years as a successful participant in countless music festivals. She won the Morning Star festival in 1994 and would later finish second in the Yalta 98 festival in Ukraine. In 2009, she took the victory in the Discovery festival in Bulgaria in 1999 as wells as in Slavic Bazaar festival in Belarus, the Spring of April festival in North Korea.

In 2005, when Moldova debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest, Nelly Ciobanu tried to represent her country for the first time. With the song One more time, she finished second behind Zdob si Zdub. On Christmas eve the same year, her first daughter was born. In 2009, she entered the Moldovan national final again and could win this time with the song Hora din Moldova.

Nelly Ciobanu is a graduate of the Tiraspol music college. She was on tour with many international stars like Patricia Kass, who will represent France this year, and Michael Bolton. At her concerts, she performs songs in eleven different languages including Romanian, English, Russian, Italian and Korean.

The national selection

Moldova went for a classic national final again. 20 acts, that had been chosen by internet voting out of the songs submitted to the broadcaster, competed in the show. The winner was chosen by a mix of jury voting, televoting and a special jury formed by TVM. Nelly Ciobanu was the favourite of all three and was the clear winner of this selection.

Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest

Moldova entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 and immediately finished second in the semi final and sixth in the final, which is still the country's best result. Another top ten placing followed in 2007, while in 2008 the country missed the final for the first time.

Îi dorim Moldovei și lui Nelly Ciobanu mult noroc şi un rezultat bun in Moscova!

Nice song from Moldova this year. Good luck Nelly. And btw, balcan boy, let me remind you that moldavian is official language in Moldova by the Constitution. Romanian lang was called moldovan long time before your country has appeared. Greètengs.

Such a dreadful choice given all that brilliant house music they had in their line up.

@ May T
I agree with ur preview comment but I would add just one thing: it's not important that norway now do any kind of promotion of esc, it will just simple happen if alexander do well in moscow so don't worry about it :)))))

@ paul:

Well, here in Norway.. hehe .. you'd actually have to work hard to avoid "Fairytale" (Alexander Rybak) on the radiostations. But that's not first of all because it is our ESC entry, that's because a MGP song (norwegian ESC) for the first time ever has become a massive hit in Norway. (Maria's "hold on be strong" from last year did quite well on charts too after the finals, but not compared to Fairytale) Fairytale actually hit 1st place on our official charts before the national finals, and without any promotion besides one performance live on MGP semi finals. It's still # 1, after eight weeks on first place.

Norway is traditionally not a very active and dedicated ESC country pre competition days. If I went out on the streets asking, problably at least 99 out of 100 wouldn't have the slightest idea of who Malena Erman, Sakis, Hadise, Soraya, Brinck, Jade or Waldo's people are. Or, problably a few would know Malena Erman, and answer that she is a Swedish mezzosoprano and operasinger, but not havin' a clue that she's in the ESC this year. There are only very few fans who follows ESC closely from an early stage, most people don't until the happenings are lining up in the host city the last week or two before the ESC.
The interest for ESC in Norway has ofcourse grown a bit from Alexanders huge hit with "Fairytale", but sorry to say, I think it's more about the boy himself, his talent and music and of course Frikar Dance Company, than the competition, which most people couldn't care less about. I desperatly hope NRK (Norwegian broadcasting company) FOR ONCE is smart enough to take advantige of this years massive sucsess in Norway, and continue to walk in the same direction as Swedens MF to create more of a national joy around the national selection process. That would of course encrease the interest of the other ESC entries too, but as it is now, only the ESC fans knows the entries from the other countries. NRK starts the presentation shows on the 15th of April, so far I haven't heard any of the other entries on the radio or seen any of them on TV. And if Fairytale hadn't become such a sucsess on it's own regardless of ESC, we wouldn't have heard that one played either, neither on radio or TV. I don't think that it matters either, most people don't listen to the ESC songs of other countries before the semi finals, some even not until the ESCfinals. It's the entry with the highest WOW factor and a great song that wins. Promotions like preview shows and TV performances are pretty useless, there's only a few TVshows that allowes ESC stars to enter and only ESC fans goes to preview partys - and we've already got our favourites. I'd say it's rather a huge risk for an ESC artist to have a very agressive promotion, the worst that can possible happen to an artist is to become.. boring, and some of this years ESC artist ought to be more considerate to that threat and stop running in front of the cameras whenever they can.

The best Moldavian ESC song since 2005.

This song is OK, as far as I'm concerned, but nothing spectacular. I think it is the strongest ethnic song this year though. It should have no problem getting to the final and it will probably be in the Top 10.

My favourite Moldovan ESC song:

2007 Fight
