Introducing the 2009 entries: Spain

All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still five weeks away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part twenty-four is dedicated to the entry from Spain.

Baisc information

PerformerSoraya Arnelas (performing as Soraya)
SongLa noche es para mí (The night is for me)
LanguageSpanish and English
MusicIrini Michas, Jason Gill, Dimitri Stassos
LyricsFelipe Pedroso
Draw25th in the final

The song

La noche es para mí, which originally had Greek lyrics and was offered to 2005 Eurovision Song Contest winner Helena Paparizou, is a mediterranean up-tempo pop song. The lyrics tell that the singer has a good time and that she asks someone else to spend that special time with her:

                    Vuelvo a mirar
                    Tus ojos son un volcán
                    No escaparás
                    Tu fuego dirá la verdad
No importa si quieres o no
                    Porque hoy mando yo

                    Come on and take me
                    Come on and shake me
Quiero saber lo que sientes por mí

                     I take another look
Your eyes are like a volcano
You are not going to escape
Your fire will tell the truth
It does not matter if you want it or not
Because today I am giving the orders

                    Come on and take me
                    Come on and shake me
I want to know what you feel for me

The singer

Soraya became famous when she entered the fourth series of the talent search Operación Triunfo, which had selected the Spanish Eurovision Song Contest representatives in its first three series, in 2005. She would finish second overall and in 2006, she was ranked the seventh most successful contestant in this show ever. Her first album Corazón de fuego, which was produced by Kike Santander, was a huge success in Spain reaching platinum status with more than 80,000 copies sold.

Her second album Ochenta's was as successful as the first one in sales figures and also spawned the singer's first top ten single Self control, which was a cover version of the Laura Branigan song (and also recorded and co-written by Raf, Italian entrant in 1987). It reached gold status in Spain. Her second album was a mix of cover versions and new songs, but her third album released the year after, which brought her another gold disc, was a cover album with hits from the 1980s. In 2008, she recorded the song Tonight we ride/No digas que no with 2006 Belgian Eurovision Song Contest representative Kate Ryan for Ryan's album Free.

Soraya entered the Spanish national selection for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with the song La noch es para mí from her fourth album Sin miedo. She finished second overall and first in the pop/rock category making her proceed to the national final, which she could win. The single has entered the Spanish charts and is currently peaking at number 16 making it her third most successful single to date.

The national selection

An online selection was to choose the 30 songs for the televised Eurovision Song Contest 2009 selection. Those entries were allocated in three semi finals. Four songs of each heat qualified for the grand final (which was held right after the last semi final omitting the second chance round) and Soraya was the winner. She was the favourite of the televoters and the second favourite of the jury.

Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest

Spain has entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 and they have not missed a single edition since. Victories came in 1968 and on homeground in 1969. In other years, the results were mixed but Spain finished second four times and third once. The lates string of successful results came in the early 2000s with four top ten palcing in a row (2001-2004).

¡Deseamos a España y a Soraya mucha suerte y un buen resultado en Moscú!

A little "gift" for all the eurofans from Portugal who like Soraya.

Here she is singing "Eu sei que vou te amar" back in the day in Operación Triunfo.

I think this is a good entry, to me, the best with Turkey and Azerbaiyan... but Spain has no luck with televote and withe the introduction of the jury is almost impossible that Soraya could reach a top5 in Moscow, I thinks she's gonna end betwenn 7th or 10th..

ANYWAY, SORAYA YOU HAVE MY 12 POINTS FROM VENEZUELA... You're one of the BEST spanish candidates of the recent years and you're making something impossible, to get back to he spanish people the ilussion of winning ESC!

I think for the first time in many years we've got the right singer. The problem is that I have the feeling this is not the right song. We'll see. I don't think she'll win - Norway will win by a landslide - but I just hope she doesn't end in the bottom. She's been working so hard here in Spain to try to do well for her country... I would be really sad.

COME ON SORAYA!!! GREAT ENTRY THIS YEAR FROM SPAIN,TOP 5 DESERVE,

if Greece or Turkey would send "La noche es para mí" they'd get a TOP 5 if not the victory. It's undeniable!.

Do you know how 50/50 works? If the juries don't vote for Greece or Turkey, they have no chance of being in the top 5.

And I'm very glad that I learned that the juries' votes this year will be published so we'll know who gave whom what...and then we can talk again on a new basis.

Good song and energetic performance but I think there are better entries this year. Still, I think Spain will end up in the top end of the scoreboard. Good luck!

Daniel Sj. I can tell you and I'd bet all my money that if Greece or Turkey would send "La noche es para mí" they'd get a TOP 5 if not the victory. It's undeniable!. But Spain will be lucky if Soraya reaches the top 10... What a pity! Shame on the ESC

Ki.var .

Norway will prove this year that you can win if you send the right song.

I hope this deception to TVE shows them that some countries will never win, just for being that countries. It is the same problem as in semifinals: some countries will never qualify just for being that countries. If Spain was more eastern, we could have some chance... while Spain keeps being western... there's nothing to do.

I hope this will be the last spanish entry.

Good luck España Great Job
La noche es para mí
Go Soraya Arnelas

@Daniel sj
I accept your opinion
but I love Spain, Greece, Norway, Armenia and Finland

Ok song, but the same problem as Turkey and greece NOT good
enough to win. Turkey will probably do best of them because of all Turks in ALL western countrys.

Norway will win BIG TIME !

Buena Suerte a España
Spain, Greece, Norway, Finland is nices song and my be also Turkey...
But Azerbaijan Asel&Arash duo have no chance
because same rythim and same music
repeat and repeat
it is a routinely music
I think Assel & Arash is unqualified entries
"Always" is no good

I think she's a nice girl and a good singer, but after listening to it twice I'm not impressed by the song. It sounds very much in the Eurovision mould. Good however that a successful singer finally dares to represent Sapin. Thanx to her for that !

Best wishes to Soraya, she's not in my Top 10, but I'm sure she'll do well.

This song is okay, but it's not my favorite. I prefered Mirela to sing for Spain. But Soraya is a great singer, I wish het good luck in Moscow !!
