Part thirty-one

Introducing the 2009 entries: Azerbaijan

All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still about a month away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part thirty-one is dedicated to the entry from Azerbaijan.

Basic information

PerformersAySel & Arash (Aysel Teymurzadə and Ārash Labāf)
SongAlways
LanguageEnglish
MusicArash Labaf, Robert Uhlmann, Johan Bejerholm, Marcus Englöf, Alex Papaconstantinou
LyricsArash Labaf, Robert Uhlmann, Elin Wrethov, Anderz Wrethov
Draw12th in the second semi final

The song

Always is an ethnic up-tempo pop song. The lyrics are a declaration of a love that is so big that it is almost an addiction:

                    I believe I'm addicted to you
                    In your eyes I see dreams coming true
                    Finally I have found you and now
                    I will never let you go - no

                    You are
                    Always on my mind
                    Always in my heart
                    And I can hear you call my name
                    On a mountain's high

The duo

Aysel, who will celebrate her 20th birthday next Saturday, is a newcomer to the music business, although she has started singing at the age of only four. She took part in various singing contests and won the Pohre award in 2001. She then entered a music school in Baku taking lessons in the piano and vocals department. In 2004, she continued her studies in the United States, where she successfully took part in various singing competitions. Back in Azerbaijan, she now concentrates on her carreer as a singer and on her studies.

Arash was born in Iran, but his family moved to Sweden when he was still a child. He became famous in 2005 with the song Boro boro, which was a number one hit in Sweden and also reached the charts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland and Poland. Other successful recordings followed, among them the song Arash, which was a number one hit in Poland. So far, he has released three albums and he also works as a songwriter and producer for other artists.

AySel and Arash joined forces to represent Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. Originally, AySel was announced to compete as a soloist but songwriter Arash was chosen to join her on stage due to his popularity. In two participations, AySel and Arash are the second duo already to represent the country in the contest.

The national selection

Ther Azerbaijan entry for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest was selected internally and information about it was given out in small portions. First the singer was announced, then Arash was announced as composer followed by the song title and Arash's own participation before a first snippet of the song could be heard. It took some more time until the whole song could be heard.

Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest

Azerbaijan took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time last year and had a strong debut: Elnur & Samir finished sixth in the first semi final and eighth in the final with their song Day after day.

               Biz küsənmək Azərbaycan da Aysel Teymurzadə və Arash yaxşı nəticəyə nail olmaq içəri Moskva!

@Marko Bojic,
Really bro? I didn't expect it to be hit in other countries except Azerbaijan until May. Usually majority of the people listen to ESC song for the first time on the final nights.

Ok, which of the mods deleted my last post? And WHY?
I won't put up with your bull**** forever, you know. It's a pity that esctoday is giving in to ridiculous censorship.

I'd love this to win for the Azeri's but if the OGAE results are anything to go by, the winner will be Norway.

After those freaky squicky hell boys last year which was one of the most awful performances and entries ever on ESC (definitely the most unuseful-screaming entry ever), this is quite refreshing from Azerbaijan.

Soft pop, not original but can be listened.

Not in my top10 but I don't hate this one. Flat and common, nothing more.

@Lina,
It is very sad to see the aim of some people to provoke and to make political things coming to Eurovision and namely to ESCtoday. I hope this problem will be solves with the help of moderators.

Sabina - Gordon R. Ocks [57097]
Sun 19 Apr 2009 02:55:13

@ Lina

Yay you've noticed as well :) I thought of the same, I don't know what his/her background is, but he/she (I think it's a he) is here to cause problems. He's probably bored :P

His aim is to provoke others to reply and when others reply they get replies back, so the result of it is another fight/drama/spam on esctoday. Sad really, instead of promoting friendship and unity on this page people are trying to disturb it.

btw Lina you English is superduper :P

First of all mr fake user, it's so irrelevant for someone from Chechnya to say something about Armenia or sign up to make an account here to support Azerbaijan. So I guess you failed. Orkhan Ibrahimov, same story what else can I say. Please mods check their IP's.

@Orkhan Ibrahimov,
There are around 20 mln azebaijanies in Iran. Arash is originally from Iran. His father's father is azerbaijani, while father's mother is persian. His mother is persian. He consider himself both persian and azerbaijani originally from Iran, but living in Sweden! That's it! :)

Orkhan Ibrahimov [55796]
Sat 18 Apr 2009 22:25:16

Arash isnt from Sweden and Iran.Arash is from southern Azerbaijan.South Azerbaijan is located in the Iran.
