Part thirty-eight

Introducing the 2009 entries: Hungary

All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still three weeks away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part thirty-eight is dedicated to the entry from Hungary.

Basic information

PerformerZoli Ádok (Zoltán Ádok)
SongDance with me
LanguageEnglish
MusicZé Szabó
LyricsKasai
Draw11th in the second semi final

The song

Dance with me is an uptempo pop song. As the title suggests, the lyrics are an invitation to dance with the singer:

                   Just by the way you move
                   You make me beg for more
                   I'm burning with desire
                   It's the night I've waited for

                   Don't you lose your emotion
                   Don't you be shy tonight
                   Let the rhythm show you
                   Baby, you can do it right
                   Alright, tonight

The singer

Zoli Ádok is a successful musical actor in his country. He graduated as a dancer from the school of performing arts in Pécs and would travel the world with a music company to appear in shows like Cats and Fame. He returend to Hungary in 2007 and took part in the talent search A star is born. Currently, he starrs in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat. In 2008, his debut album as a solo performer was released. The title track Tánclépés was submitted for the internal selection for the Hungarian entry in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.

The song was eventually chosen as Hunagrian entry in Moscow being the third choice following a disqualified entry and a withdrawal. In 2009, he starrs in the Hungarian comedy film Alom.net and he also performs two of the songs on the soundtrack album. After the Eurovision Song Contest, he will appear in the new musical Contact. Zoli Ádok is the third male solo performer to represent the country and the first one since the country's return in 2005. On stage, he will be backed by two singers and three female dancers.

The national selection

Hungary went for an internal selection this year. The orginal choice was Márk Zentai with the song If you wanna party. However, the song was disqualified after accusations of plagiarism. The replacement was Kátya Tompos with Magányos csónak, but she withdrew because of time problems. Therefore Zoli Ádok was chosen with Dance with me.

Hungary in the Eurovision Song Contest

Having not qualified from the Eastern Europe semi final in 1993, Hungary debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 and achieved its best result to date finishing fourth. Lower placings and an elimination in the 1996 internal semi final followed and the country did not return in 2000 after its relegation in 1999. In 2005 Hungary came back, withdrew again but returned for the 2007 and 2008 contests. Last year, they did not make it past the second semi final, where they finished last.

                  Magyarországnak és az Àdok Zolinak sok szerencsét és jó eredményt kívánunk Moszkvában!

Apart from the evident similarity to Madonna's "Vogue" (the begining of the song), I overall like it! I can't see it in the top ten but I think it deserves to be in the final!
Good luck Hungary!

This felt more like a performance out of "Dancing with the stars" than anything else. Anyhow...this could have a chance of slipping through to the final. Good luck Hungary!

well whatever you are, in the end, you support your country and the songs you like in a very intelligent and encouraging way, unlike some here, so good luck to Sasha and long live commentators like u here on ESCtoday!! ps sorry for my singing when u finally get to hear it!

@E.P
believe me, don't deny it, you are truly a Eurofan!, I came out of the "closet" myself around 1990, when my cousin sang, and since then, apart from songwriting etc, am proud to be a fan, although these days I don't like many of the songs...hallo hallo!, goodbye goodbye!

paul c [13910]
Sat 25 Apr 2009 22:48:07

@E.P
I hope also that Sasha wil pass to to the final, for the quality of the song and the performance, as I hope the Hungarian singer will too (more cause he's Hungarian), saying that you're not a big ESCfan you spend a lot of time here giving your excellent comments!, are you sure you're not a big fan in secret?! I've been a Eurofan since I first watched it in 1976, but for other reasons than comments here theseedays, I sent u a couple of mails, hope u like them!

It's my the loveliest song this year! I really think that it's the best dance song of this year! Wish him victory=) 12 point from me from Russia

Sat 25 Apr 2009 21:54:28

@E.P
ok well I can send u then some "significant" songs , more in relation to Eurovision, I see you're a lot younger than me so I guess that's why I've been writing for so long, I appreciate the Lithuanian entry for its 3-minute melody/lyrics which, believe me is very hard to do, and for the fact that it doesn't rely on any shake-shake-shake tactics which even our Spanish entry has!..
