Introducing the 2009 entries: FYR Macedonia

All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still two weeks away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part forty-one is dedicated to the entry from FYR Macedonia.

The song

Nešto što kje ostane is a rock song in a 1980s style. The lyrics are a declaration of love by singing another person's praise:

                    Yeah, yeah, in happiness and pain
                    Everything will fade

The band

Next Time is a rock duo originating from Skopje that consists of of the twin brothers Stefan and Martin Filipovski. Martin is the lead singer and Stefan plays the guitar and provides backing vocals. While they have already been performing for years, they joined forces in early 2008 to perform under the name Next Time. In fact, they were discovered by composer Jovan Jovanov, who composed the FYR Macedonian entry in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest.

Their first single Ne veruvam vo tebe was a huge success in their home country. With the song Me mislish li?, they won the Summer Hit of the Year Award at the Zvezdena nok music festival. Another award followed for their third single Me ostavi sam da zhiveam and their fourth song Bez tebe tivko umiram brought them a second place at the MakFest, a highly popular festival.

In late 2008, their eponymous debut album was released. In 2009, they competed in the FYR Macedonian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest and could win the selection. They are the first duo to represent the country and the first all-male act since 2005.

The national selection

For the first time, the televised national selection included two semi final with 16 songs each. Eight songs out of each heat made it to the grand final, where Next Time were chosen as winners. The won the televote but were only seen fourth by the jury. However, they could still win as the jury favourites Kiliopi & Naum only finished fifth in the televoting.

FYR Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest

FYR Macedonia wanted to debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1996 but did not make it past the internal semi final. They did not decide to take part in 1997 and therefore had their debut in 1998. Their first three participations all ended towards the bottom of the scoreboard and led to releagations in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Over the four years with one semi final, FYR Macedonia always qualified for the final, where it would finish outside the top ten again. In 2008, the country would have made it to the final again based on the televotes finishing tenth in the second semi final but was still eliminated as the jury wildcard was given to Sweden. The best result in a final was a 12th place in 2006.

It is a nice song, and yes, no euro-trash, no creatures or fireworks on the stage, no boobs all over the place, but I kinda respect Next Time for singing something their style instead of making an artificial song that could ''possibly be voted'' for by certain spectator groups at ESC. (Like that poor girl from Malta singing about Vodka???, or naming as many cities in the lyrics so that their citizens would feel ''honored'' and vote for it etc)
This is the first time Macedonia chose the best song offered at a particular pre-selection.

By the way, why are still highly offensive comments not deleted? Disputing Macedonian language and using non-existing names and abbreviations for Macedonia just in order to insult their citizens IS HUGE offense. If I reacted on Finland's entry wishing ''good luck to the former Soviet province'', or reacted on Slovakian Introduction that what they speak is actually a ''czech dialect'', would that be OK?? (p.s. picked up the examples by chance, no offense to Finland nor Slovakia)

Kaliopi song was not so good and Next Time won fair and square.

Cute twin brothers with great songs and a great voice. I like the song much. 80s rock style is awesome and every song on their album is good!

I really hope they qualify and I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I will be mad though if they end up #10 and the jury picks another!

Not only OGAE club from this country has a very bad taste , but also the song they chose to represet them second year in a row is so bad .

I don't know why Macedonia always does this. It hardly ever selects a good song in Eurovision even though it does have good songs. Macedonians may say that they like this song but they really don't. This can be seen by looking at music charts. Next Time are popular and most of their singles have been top, but Nesto Sto ke Ostane has had a low position in our charts. Even Aleksandar Belov has been more successful, who got 8th place in our selection.

Well me likes the song.. its not amazing but i like it! I wanna cry now seeing that they put "bez tebe tivko umiram" up here tho, coz i luuuurv this song and is 1000000Xbetter than nesto sto ke ostane!
@marko: omg dont remind me about kaliopi!!!! do u remember how angry i was wen the aromanian queen didnt win?? and what piiiiiisssssseeeeed me off even more was the reaction of the studio audience to her and naume when they got the jury votes... seljaci pfft
