Day 2: Israel, Bulgaria,Iceland & FYR Macedonia
Song 10: Israel
First on stage this morning for the technical rehearsal of the Eurovision Song Contest semi final are the Israeli duo Noa & Mira Awad with their entry There must be another way. The song is being performed in three languages, English, Hebrew and Arabic. Not only this will be first time that a song from Israel is being sung in an Arab language, this will also mark the first occasion that an Israeli song at the contest will be sung by an Arab artist, Mira Awad. Fittingly, the lyrics are a message of peace expressing the hope that there must be another way than war and suffering.
The both girls are dressed in sleek black outfits with long black trails. This presented problems this morning for the two girls as the walked around the stage, particularly for Noa as the heels of her high healed shoes became stuck in the trail of her dress on several occasions. For the the second run through of the song the trails were removed. This is a more acoustic version of there song There must be a another way, than we saw in the Israeli final. Both ladies deliver powerful vocal performances and harmonise very well. this is an authentic performqace which truly fits the message of the song. Noa & Mira are joined on stage by a percussion player and two guitarists.
Song 11: Bulgaria
Next on stage is Krassimir Avramov the first male solo performer to represent Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest. He is joined on stage by his backing vocalists Petya Buyuklieva, Ani Lozanova and Albena Veskova and the two dancers from Stilt World. Together they present their entry which is a contempary ethno pop song called Illusion.
Krassimir is blessed with a very rare male voice, the tenor-altino, which makes a powerful impression in the first technical rehearsal this morning. One would expect that is would be rather difficult to harmonise with such a high pitched voice, however the vocal arrangement with the three backing singers works well and adds an extra dimension to the song. The vocal pitching of the song is not always perfect, however it does add strong character to the powerful rhythm and drive of the song. We also we some of the most effective stage presentation with burning flames being projected on the screens behind the artists and dynamic dancing by two performers on stilts.
Song 12: Iceland
Next on on stage is Yohanna the 16 year old singer from Iceland with her beautiful power ballad Is is true. She is joined on stage by one cello player, one guitarist and three backing vocalist, which include Fredrick from Euroband, who provide powerful vocals.
The stage is covered by heavy fog and a wind machine moves this to one side of the stage to give a haunting presentation of this emotional song. Blue background is used to show clouds and the moon. Yoohanna is dressed in red and does not move on the stage, however, cameras shots are used to good effect. She has has a crystal clear voice and the song is delivered with great maturity and heavenly vocals.
Song 13: FYR Macedonia
Following Iceland on stage we have the twin brother from the FYROM who make up the band Next Time with their rock song Nešto što kje ostane. Performing with the brothers on stage are three guitarist and a drummer. We see glam metal celebrates its return in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.
The choice of the Macedonian language obviously adds to the song and makes it more unusual although the stage performance is kept in a very classic way, just like in the national final. Flashing red, green and blue light are displayed on the stage throughout the show. The band provide a very strong vocal performance and the rock sounds blasts the arena for last of the opening group of rehearsals this morning.

macedonia the best
Iceland is my number one this year, definitely 12 points from the UK. Otherwise Israel should qualify too,its a good song.
Powerful song fram Jóhanna Guðrún, Iceland. Hope we go trough to the finals!
I love the Bulgarian song, but I wish the backing vocals were toned down a little, like in the recorded version! Don't their microphones have volume controls??!!
Still I love Krassimir and his song + his 3 lovely vokalists +the show!
Where from you know all of that?
All about Krassimir is a LIE. He cannot sing live! He isn't a tenor altino, he sings falset and Falset/ falsetto is no special singing! To reach high notes screaming isn't nice or correct singing!
The LA Awards are independent Awards which anyone could buy and no big deal in the business, despite of that his name isn't in even on the nominees list: http://www.piratenew(...).org/hollywood4.html
About the Kodak, this concert has been a part of a celebration of the Bulgarian Culture in LA and has been paid for him, no one bought tickets! The worse thing, the Bulgarian Eurovision has been bought by the boyfriend of Krassimir! Someone boasting off to be the MAN-VOICE but in the stage version the backvocals sing most ot the song? Is this a solo song as declaired? Only big words, but Krassimir action and the REAL facts about his career are really poor for an 40years old "artist". lol
Well ok I m sorry.GO MACEDONIA.Ega Sakis da se utepa na scenata a kako so ,,znae,, da pee jako ke bide
Bulgaria sound SO much better than on the national final. It can't be denied that the song in unique and the vocals are good. Of coure they can't sound PERFECT, but what do you expect? A studio version? The post-industrial feel of the background is not for this song, they should change it. But anyways, I cross my fingers for my dearest Bulgaria, coz our song deserves a spot in the finals.
Another good song is Yohanna's "Is it true". She is in my top 10, and I'm sure that she will make it to the finals.
Israel on the other hand is like a horror movie - the lights, the movements, outfits and the singers. Even the sound of the language ... Don't allow your kids to watch this entry!
FYROM are GREAT ... for the standarts of a german beerfest in the middle 80s :-P .
No Jóhanna isn't 16 she is 18, becoming 19 in October.
I like krassimir, he is so good-looking....
The song is very nice....
What a fantastic song Israel.
but you should work on your performing on stage. i'm sure you'll be great !!!
Good Luck Israel !!!
and Yohanna... i'm in love !!!!

FYROM is very average this year, if they pass it will be near 10th place, i hope not
@ESC expert, In the past FYRO Macedonia passing to the final almost every year beacuse ex yugo diaspora help u a lot
, last year also the songs wasnt favory ( the songs wasnt so bad )but u r countrey came 10 th so one step before final . i like also 2004 and 2005 entry from u r countrey.anyway this year FYRO Macedonia maybe are not favory to pass to the final but sure have more change from some favory countreys to pass to the final like: Malta, Iceland, Montenegro, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden and Portugal.
I was sceptic about Macedonia before I saw the rehearsal. They are making good atmosphere, the background is good, very good sung.
I can see this in the final.
Definitely only Israel and Iceland!
I hope Iceland wins
O.K. I'm from Macedonia and I'm tired of other Macedonians pretending that our song is good. Look at our music charts. Next Time is a famous band but their single for Eurovision has hardly been successful this year. It has entered few radio charts and then it fell out of them very quickly.
I must complement Israel though. They have a great song with a great message.
@Tina , thnx
but i speak about rock music , moldova and israel songs wasnt hard rocks, and i thing the reason who the people dont like it is maybe beacuse of the language. Maybe people didnt use to listen hard rock in other language exept english, byt this is my opinion
. Also this year i dont like english lurics in Israeli song beacuse is out of tune in the music.
I think Israel have a nice song, I like very much. And de entry from Iceland too. In my opinion, they are the best, with Turkey.
About Bulgaria... incredible!! really incredible song and singer!!!
Abaout the Czech entry: I´m living in Czech Republic, and people don´t likes his entry and the Eurovision Song Contest at all.
Big Kiss from Moravia!
OMG.... the women from bulgaria have to go away from the scene... she is all over around.... not good...
@Lina
of course that everyone has a different opinion nobody makes you like our song and i realy respect you because you didnt offend my country despite the fact that you dont like the song...
but i dont agree with your opinion that the song will be more successful if its in english taka Moldova in 2005 for example or i dont know Israel last year..
peace&best wishes for Cyprus this year!
@Iva Jovanovska, personal i dont like rock music , and why to accept something who i dont like? I like u r countrey songs 2004, 2005 and 2006 , but this year i dont like it, i didnt like also Lordis song who came first in 2006 with hard rock song, pls dont be so fanatic and accept the others opinions and dont be rude
" EUROPE DIDNT LIKE OUR SONG BEACUSE EUROPE DONT LIKE ROCK." sorry but Finland in 2006 came fisrt with one hard rock, and again Finland last year pass to the final with rock song, maybe europe dont like u r song beacuse is not in english language, rock songs is better in english language, maybe this is the reason
@Dimitris
