Spain: Soraya's message to Portuguese and Andorran fans

Following the controversy involving Spain's decision of voting in the second semifinal instead of the first one, where neighbour nations Portugal and Andorra will compete, and the subsequent fans' disappointment, Soraya, the Spanish representative, has released an official statement explaining her feelings towards this harsh situation, and clearing up that TVE's decision has nothing to do with her.

Initially, and as a result of the semifinals allocation draw, the three Iberian nations, Spain, Portugal and Andorra were all selected to perform and/or vote in the first semifinal. Presumably, this fact could increase Andorra and Portugal's chances of qualifying due to the presence of their neighbour country, Spain, in their semifinal as an only-voting nation. One week ago, the Reference Group of the EBU accepted TVE's request asking to vote in the second semifinal because the main political debate of the year is to be held on the 12th of May. The Reference Group agreed and hence Spain got a voting spot in the second semifinal.

This was seen as a matter of concern in both Andorra and Portugal. Today, the Spanish representative has released an official statement, where she says that "I would like to clear up that I have nothing to do with decisions about Eurovision that are not related to my role as a singer, like scheduling or programme planning for such a complex event like Eurovision". Soraya goes on saying that "I guess in times like these, it would not be easy to take decisions, especially when RTVE had the necessity to combine the Eurovision Song Contest with other programming duties that, as a public broadcaster, it is obliged to broadcast."

Being aware that the fact of Spain voting in the second semifinal has shaken fans in Portugal and Andorra, Soraya sends them the following message: "I know that RTVE’s decision to vote in the 2nd semifinal instead of the 1st one, as it was established, has not been well received in Andorra and Portugal because you think that it can make it harder for you to pass to the final. I know as well that, because of that, some people in the media of your countries had called the people to boycott my candidature", and continues saying that "I understand your annoyance. I would love that in Eurovision predominates the quality of the artists and people vote according to that… If that was the case, as it should definitely be, it would not matter in which semifinal a country votes. But that call to boycott me is a clear prove that, for some, music is not important at all. However, as a singer, I cannot be affected by this kind of things".

Soraya has also devoted some kind words to her fellow contestants Susanna Georgi of Andorra and Flor-de-Lis of Portugal: "I’m a singer, just like my partners Flor-de-lis and Susanna Georgi. Our job, our aim is to give the best of us as performers. However, I’m aware that in Eurovision the singers represent a country so, therefore, a 'political' part exists in this contest. I mean, some of the votes are due to the singers or the song, but others, far from negligible, are due to the friendship between countries or neighborhood voting. My only mission is to give the best of me everytime and everywhere as a performer".

Finally, and now that Soraya is back in Spain after touring several European countries to promote her entry, the Spanish hopeful sends her regards to everybody who has suported her across the continent: "Warm and loving regards to all of those who have received me with so much affection in these past weeks when I visited your countries [...]. I want to tell you this was worth it just because I met you. I want to send a warm hug to all my partners in Eurovision that I met in those countries. My only wish is to share the stage with all of you in the final".

Special thanks to Rubén Llopis for his contribution to the article.

This is so annoying...people stop talking about Portugal because you dont know anything about us...I already told you that Portugal has nothing to do with this...no one said anything about Spain and no one is sending emails to boycott Soraya...I always watch the new on TV and I read the newspaper and no one said anything about Eurovision, unfortunately the portuguese media dont care about the contest, even last year no one said anything about Vânia Fernandes and her amazing performance in Belgrade.

Joan.
You are acting childish...you know better than any one that Portugal will always vote for Spain, even when your song is a piece of shit, just like last year...do you still remember how many points Portugal gave to Spain? 10 POINTS...and do you really think that your song deserved so many points??? No!!!!
So what exactly are you afraid of???

I think it is very irresponsible of Soraya to say that some people in the media of Portugal "called" the people to boycott her candidature!!! That is simply not true because they DID NOT do it in Portugal! The Portuguese press does not care enough about Eurovision to waste time with such issues! SORAYA SHOULD CHECK HER FACTS FIRST BEFORE MAKING ANY ACCUSATIONS!

I understand that the Andorran media might be upset as we all know there is lots of neighbours to vote for each other in their semi, but what happened is wrong! Still, as usual. people on this site are taking all this out of proportion, and should stop being so angry and spiteful!

but gosh, doesn't Spain have another national channel to broadcast that political debate??? for eg in Romania, TVR owns more channels, like TVR1, TVR2, TVRcultural, TVRinfo, TVRinternational etc...! and every cable distributor has/must have among it's channels TVR1 and TVR2, so if thigs like this happen, TVR can always use alternatives......

Songs should manage to get by on their own merits and not having to rely on neighbour voting and diaspora. So stop complaining!

People need to change this thinking, it's up to them how ESC will be. If they stop voting for silly reasons and ONLY for the song they like instead, it would be fair. There are so many stupid reasons people vote. Voting for a neighbour, friend, cute/sexy singer, fun dance, politics - it's stupid!

WHY IS PORTUGAL BEING MENTIONED IN THIS ARTICLE? No one is talking about boycotting Spain here... We don't care if Spain is voting in semi 1 or not, of course we would be nice to get some extra points but we managed to qualify last year WITHOUT Spain's and Andorra's help.

andorra and portugal:
is an obligation to spain to vote for you?
can't we vote to our favourite song or we MUST vote your songs?

This discussion about neighbours and boycots and friends only proves one thing to me: ESC it's not a song contest anymore. Many people want to vote for their neighbours and expect their neighbours to vote for them, regardeless of the song. It's somehow sad...

Good luck to Spain from the UK
Spain 12
Portugal 10
Andorra 8
maybe? ;-)

I think that's so many bad understandings about soraya's letter..
First She want to explain to andorra( the most hurt by changing... acusing spain for boycot... wich includes soraya! not TVE the only one responsable about this change! and that's wasn't her desision to change televoting to the 2nd semi::
Second she wants to clear that's she's a singer to try send everyone a message.. the music is free and we have to support no matter what.. both countries have the key to get the final just have to give the message and enjoy this oportunity that people have give to both as her also..
The Most honest proove that Soraya has a strong personality and want to clear up everything.. supporting and giving big importance at the songs and how you can be wherever you can if you have a strong faith, song as determination to win no matter what!

@almila
yes you're absolutely right, and I think now I'll take your advice and wait until the final to judge as in the old days! as for my favourites well it's hard to say, I'm not a fan of any of the songs this year really but as I prefer something different and "non-euro, no naked dancers etc", I like the songs from Estonia, Lithuania and even Bosnia (also I'm a songwriter too so I prefer a well-constructed song with good chords, even the Polish the song for me is a well-constructed song but not the singer), so off to bed soon, work tomorrow, thanks for your comments...ps Turkey is ok but not my kind of song..

I thing ther must be some kind of misunderstanding: PORTUGAL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ALL THIS!!! No news on this alleged boycot has been reported in Portugal. I'm actually surprised by all this comotion. The portuguese know better, we don't follow "below the belt tactics" to get us anywhere on the final score table. We just have good music, like our neighbours, enjoy our wonderful hot weather and let it be!

Ramon Ramos [16974]

Why Soraya apologizes? She is not responsible for anything! And the decision of TVE is totally fair and justified. So that's life, if Andorra and Portugal are good enough for european viewers, they will reach the final, with or without Spain.
